taking sides: wedding bands v. wedding DJs

wedding DJs are usually some mate of yours playing tunes you actually kind of like.

wedding bands offer a window into a fascinating world of uncool music, but they are always more popular with the older people.

a proper wedding should have both, of course.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

At an anniversary party of my parents they had a soul band & a dj that played loads of old music which was such a great mix. Ideally i would like both.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Or, This is the thread where Pete reveals he got Carter USM to reform and play the Birdie Song at Tom's wedding.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hooray!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I was under strict instruction to play NO CARTER.

It wa shard I have to say. The moment the staff offered me a microphone for the decks was the hardest of the past year. For 6:30 me to turn it down knowing what 10:30 me would do with it took some serious self control.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

*applauds*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

did you play the new Busted?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes. Crashed The Wedding went down very very well (see Busted jumps etc etc).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I was under strict instruction to play NO CARTER.

Thus sanity prevailed.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the wedding missed a certain something without The Only Living Boy in New Cross.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

OLBINC + 10PMPB = DISASTER

Well done Pete, you were a genius wedding HOE.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I wish you'd decided to call yourself Head of Light Entertainment instead because the acronym would have been funnier.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Wedding bands are a symbol of commitment, if not entrapment. Wedding DJs, however, are hard to wear on your ringfinger.

Skottie, Monday, 3 November 2003 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Weddings need a crooner. Whether he has a band or a midi file player is irrelevant.

Ed (dali), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

momus!

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

does momus do weddings bar mitzvahs etc.?

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Define "do"

Skottie, Monday, 3 November 2003 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

He's been married, if that's what you mean.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

not sure what I mean. There, I've said it.

Skottie, Monday, 3 November 2003 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Anna has a word for what the DJ plays at receptions: WEDDINGCORE.

OMG I'm not sure if every wedding needs The Crooner (now say The Crooner in a Brookside accent and THE HORROR LE HORREUR).

suzy (suzy), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

*shudders*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Playing Wedddingcore is a very difficult skill to have, one I have honed to a decent if non-pro level.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes there was much muttering on Saturday when you seemed to be lashing out the really big tunes too early, Pete, but you knew what you were doing, curse you.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

People leave early, must be remembered. Big early tunes also stop people coming up and asking for stuff. Though if I had found it, I would have played Ghostbusters a Lot earlier (it did not really fit in the erection section).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 3 November 2003 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

As horrible as my wedding dj was, if he had played "Sheriff Fatman" I would have fallen to the ground weeping.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 3 November 2003 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

*nods*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 3 November 2003 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

A D.J. is ALWAYS the superior option. If a D.J. sucks, he can improve by playing different selections, whereas if a band sucks, chances are they're going to suck all night. Moreover, even if the D.J. is taking a break, music can still be played. Try that with a band.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 November 2003 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

what about a band of ROBOTS?

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 3 November 2003 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

A D.J. is ALWAYS the superior option.

what if the band was killing joke alex?!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 3 November 2003 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hard as it is to believe, Geeta, not everyone enjoys Killing Joke as much as I do (and when you play music at a wedding, the desired result is to engage and entertain everyone, not just yourself). Thus, Killing Joke are not the ideal wedding band.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 November 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

If a D.J. sucks, he can improve by playing different selections, whereas if a band sucks, chances are they're going to suck all night.

but if the band is good, then they will not suck. if the DJ sucks he will keep playing sucky crap all night.

Great wedding bands I have known:

i) the rockist band at my sister's wedding, who played loads of ROCK and refused to play or allow be played 'The Birdie Song'.

ii) the trad jazz band at friend Ivan's wedding. Kind of like the Uptown Shufflers, only older and better at dancing.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 3 November 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, what's all this rockist shit about a band or DJ. All the best bands have DJ's in them.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 3 November 2003 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Like WHEATUS!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 November 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ DJ DJ DJ DJ DJ DJ DJ DJ DJ. I despise wedding bands. They are an abomination against God and the union of marriage and in fact against everything ever.

Allyzay, Monday, 3 November 2003 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

But what if it's Adam Ant?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Only if he brings gorillas with him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

& MIST!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Only if he brings gorillas with him.

....in tuxeodoes!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

today is adam ant's birthday! save the gorillas! save the blurillaz!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 3 November 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

since i live in the Midwest, i have only known The Wedding DJ.

Wedding DJs are evil and should be crucified on shards of the LPs they no longer play.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 3 November 2003 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I want this guy to DJ my (er, hypothetical) wedding:

http://www.voxshowroom.com/ct/misc/discotape.gif

Annouschka (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 3 November 2003 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, no fair, he's stolen my act.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 3 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

now now pete, plenty of DJs have mustaches

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 3 November 2003 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't care if the band is made up of Kraftwerk fronted by Adam Ant with a special cameo by George Clinton with an omnipotent baby remix, they're still going to do a shit version of "Old Time Rock 'n' Roll" or "Strangers in the Night" and my wedding will be forever stained by that memory.

Allyzay, Monday, 3 November 2003 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

And by barbeque sauce.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 3 November 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

:P

Allyzay, Monday, 3 November 2003 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ew, Ally, I wouldn't lick that barbecue sauce now.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 3 November 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

We are never going to live the bbq sauce admission down, are we? It's not like we do that every weekend, people!

Allyzay, Monday, 3 November 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, you actually admitted something with the BBQ sauce? i thought it was only some incriminating photos?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 3 November 2003 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't admit anything but the other party involve posted an admission prior to the photographs being posted by evil friends.

Allyzay, Monday, 3 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, i thought that "Sploshing" was only a BRITISH thing.

don't tell me that their preevertedness has come over here, too.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 3 November 2003 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

My wedding will have one of my friends DJing and I will have a band that I like playing. Sod the old folk, it's my day! And anyway, my Dad loves almost everything I like (musically).
