The gender politics of icecream

Okay.

Some people like their icecream more 'icey' and others like it more 'creamy'.

Personally, I go for icey. It's sharper and colder, having the texture of a brittle solid. Where as creamy icecream feels formless and usually carries a concentration of those sickly sweet flavours that I consciously avoid in sweets and chocolate.

So how can this be construed in terms of masculine v feminine dogma? I'm aware of Julia Kristeva's work concerning the male fear of the female abject - her viscous bodily secretions perceived as a suffocating, enveloping ocean akin to the womb - but that doesn't explain my passion for female fluids during a good bonk.

So on the one hand I'm interested in everyone's take on the confectionary aspect of this old dichotomy, and on the other I'm just trying to figure out who the fuck I am.

So let's hear it...

Um, I don't really like ice cream that much.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

creamy but with kinda chewy little ice crystals like we used to get from the ice cream man in Chesterfield, that was the best ever, they closed it down I believe.

chris, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm.. I like Haagen Dazs type consistency - is that the 'creamy' of which you speak? Actually I'm even a fan of ice-cream van gloop once in a while. But then I like sorbets and ices too. Does this mean I am androgynous?

As a side issue: Yesterday 'bed', today 'bonk' - what's going on?

I don't know, Nick, you tell me.

As for ice cream, it depends on my mood. Some days I feel fruity, in which case the icy sort is good, but sometimes I feel choc 'n' nutty, in which case creamy does the trick. Have you had ice cream from Carluccio's yet? They do the best nocciola I've found since leaving Italy.

The 'crunchy' stuff hurts when you...oh, never mind

dave q, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The bits in it are all-important.

It has to be creamy. Japanese tea flavoured ice-cream is dreamy.

Icy textured ice cream sets my teeth on edge - I usually stick it in the satanic box (ie. microwave) for about 30 seconds till it melts.

Trevor, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Japanese tea flavoured ice-cream is dreamy.

Are you some kind of poof?

Nick, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because I like Japanese tea flavoured ice-cream or because I ended a sentence with the word "dreamy"? Or both?

To be honest, I wasn't aware that either demonstrated a penchant for anal intercourse, but perhaps you are an authority on the subject. I don't know.

Trevor, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, Dreamy Nick's just offended that you referred to something other than himself as dreamy.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.

Nick, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a NIGHTMARE!

Sarah, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Dreamy" is an absolutely delightful word and anyone who disagrees with me gets a jolly good rogering. ARRRRRRRRRR.

Trevor, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lord. I have accidentally taken a course in language and gender. it has nothing to do with ice cream. yet. i bought some chunky monkey ice cream the other day. it's only banana flavoured. i sulked and sulked. and then gave it to sarah after picking all the chocolate bits out. i don't like ice cream that is too cold. explain that.

alix, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chunky Monkey is one of my favorites! Of course it's banana flavored, what did you expect, monkey flavored?

Sean, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

does not like bananas or chocolate = he is an arsemonkey

Tracer hand, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like icey ice cream...often = headaches. So, I guess I opt for creamy.
