ILE nations roll call

I was wondering how many nationalities ILE readers and writers come from.

For the purposes of this game, the UK is to be treated as a 4 different nations.

So:

England - ME!

Nick, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a Canuck, eh.

dave q, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The highlands of Scotland!

Sarah, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tartan, kilts, sporrans, penguins...

penguins = my early childhood cos I remember seeing them on a random trip to Embra zoo.

Sarah, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a Minnesotan.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Minnesotan a nationality?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Texas. And No, I don't wear a cowboy hat or ride a horse to work. The only people here I know who ride horses don't leave thier homes much, unfortunately. Everything is Big in Texas save for maybe a few hundred brains.

Hank, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew this would degenerate. Start your own ILE US States roll call, punk. Sarah is not Scottish.

Nick, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

unfortunately australian, though i almost moved permanatly to aargentina.

Geoff, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

South African, Rhodesian parentage, now I live in England and my parents live in Ohio. What am I?

Sam, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well are you a British national? I guess that's the defining thing (those with dual nationality passports are allowed to be special).

Nick, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oops. I guess (Nationality) that means I'm officially a Mut. Scottish/Irish/Am. Indian/

Hank, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am actually. But only because my mum was born here.

Sam, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's where I was born and lived for three or f0ur years, so there, Nighty Nicky. After that we is moving to England and I lose trace of Scottish accent. Have no relatives there and my parents are both English. Do that make me Engaleeesh? DOES IT?

NB Nick is not from England he is from HADES.

Sarah, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

England, although I'd say British if it weren't for Nick's four nations rule. It annoys me that on a US immigration form, in the box marked Nationality, I have to put UK. UK is not my nationality, it is the place of which I am a citizen. Rant, rant etc.

Madchen, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mericun, thas me. YAY!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm confused. Are we stating we country we live in or where our people are from? You have to qualify American with your state. It makes a huge difference.

Samantha, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But British = UK (Britain being the official abbreviation of Great Britain and Nothern Ireland') doesn't it? What's your beef Madchen?

Nick, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Me= Sou 'Thafrican

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Really Mitch? I didn't know that. Howzitay?

Sam, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a wild colonial boy from the pancake flat praries. i am so candain that i know how to make an igloo

anthony, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The sunny seaside town of Berwick upon Tweed which makes me English for the time being.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hah! They taught us how to make igloos in Minnesota, too, so Canada hasn't cornered the market on that one.

It's odd, I feel no connection to the US as a country, but I feel a strong connection to the state of Minnesota despite not really wanting to move back there. This supports my theory that the US is Too Damn Big.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

American, Brooklyn born + raised

Lesley Higgins, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose if somebody asks me what my nationality is I expect to reply with "I'm British". "I'm UK" doesn't work.

My beef is jerky.

Madchen, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chicago, Illinois, USA, where we make grey igloos with yellow spots. Like Dan, I prefer to wave the Chicago flag instead of the US one.

Kerry, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh - I see. Just a grammatical thing. I was getting worried I'd missed some nuance of nationality or Britishness. Do they actually tell you off if you write 'British' or is it a box ticking thing, then?

Nick, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. The people at immigration don't like mistakes and they make you fill in a whole new form.

Madchen, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean yes they tell you off and no, it's not a box ticking thing. I have ILE diarrhoea today so I'm going to shut up now and go shopping.

Madchen, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do they tell French people off for writing 'French' rather than 'France'? What a load of nutters US immigration officials are. You'd think they'd have better things to do with their time.

Nick, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'my true nationality is mankind'

graheme green

Ed, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am from Stroumia

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

English, I live in the Netherlands.

stevo, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

American Londoner from Minnesota. Dan is right about the Minnesota thing, it's not quite like the rest of America, it acts like it doesn't need it (apart from the Gulf coast of Florida, in case of cold).

suzy, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

English. Sarah is Scottish too. Even my brother noticed it and he's a teenage delinquent and Pink Floyd fan.

alix, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The feeling's mutual Suzy. Most of the rest of the US doesn't feel like it needs Minn. either. Especially Garrison Keilor. . .

Samantha, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

50% of Minnesota doesn't feel like it needs Garrison Keilor, either. Why do you think we pushed him national? So he'd move to LA and leave us the fuck alone. Didn't really work, but we tried, dammit.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, speak for yourself. :) The Upper Midwest stands united! I think we're all hoping for a Canadian invasion.

Kerry, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kerry, you're giving away the SECRET PLAN. Shhhhhhh!

Dan Perry, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am from Belgium - more precisely West Flanders. Land of Beer and Chocolate.

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Upper Midwest is scary. I wanna go back to Colorado.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am from England. I have a Spanish great great great great grandmother.

jel, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Will you Americans please stop fighting among yourselves? Only *one* of you was supposed to pop up on this thread. You're American and that's the end of it. Unless you are itching for another civil war.

Nick, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sam, how long ago did you leave SA?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brits, however, are welcome to post to this thread as often as possible, complaints about Americans are especially encouraged. Perhaps an invasion of the Nuclear Weapons Top Trumps, or some other thread of obvious universal relevance is in order.

Y.P., Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there are 5 nations in the UK; London
South England
North England
Scotland
Northern Ireland

and maybe slightly functionlass istlands with degrees of indipendant gocvernment like Jersey, Gibraltar, Falklands, isle of man.

Kris, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Canadian, or Ontarian to be more specific (this country is ludicrously huge you know, I've seen *maybe* a fifth or a sixth of it to any reasonably familiar degree) but only first generation so - mother born in Paisley Scotland, father born in Rhodesia. Really, really, really want to travel, and my extended family is scattered around the globe, which could come in very handy.

Kim, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am from South-Eastern Idaho, I have lived her & Wyoming all my live- long days.

1 1 2 3 5, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

turner, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anthony, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Like the current Miss England, I am from Leicestershire. Up yours, Derbyshire!

Peter Miller, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

interesting that ll the americans posting here put wht state theyre from, whereas anyone else has just said what country theyre from.....i mean i know america's big n'all but it makes a difference what part of the country you come from, anywhere. eg australia? that place is huge! even in englang, im from hertfordshire but i live in s yorks. they are very different places, with very different people. in fact, historically they're pretty much totally different people, fter the ol' danelaw palaver.

ambrose, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am English, Derbyshire to be precise. Up yours Leicestershire!

chris, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just to clarify Nitsuh, the original point of this thread was to just see how many nationalities were represented on ILE (hence no need for multi-posting from Americans or anyone else). That's why I wrote 'ENGLAND - ME!' rather than 'ME - ENGLAND!'. But everyone seems to want to take the opportunity to say where they're from and that's cool too.

Nick, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

More details? OK - BC, the left coast, about as connected to the rest of Canada as every other part is, which is to say not much. Forget regionalism, it's more like being on different planets in the solar system, in distance if not in culture. Actually, BC has never had much to do with anything in the world, come to think of it. Especially the none-more-remote rural parts where I come from. Breeds a weird outlook.

dave q, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A Yank in Germany.

Colin Meeder, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm exactly as Welsh as Sarah is Scottish (ie English), although usually say Welsh cause it's cooler.

Graham, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or we could all do like the Irish-American, Afro-American thing and talk about our actual origins, in which case I'm about 40% Yorkshire, 40% Irish, 10% Scottish, 5% Spanish & 5% unknown (probably mongol, my skin's kind of yellow and my blood type is AB) (joking about the mongol bit).

Tabs, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was going to include wales, before realising wales probably doesn't count. it has no function.

matthew james, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wales counts. its pretty

anthony, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So, the USA has already been claimed, huh? ;)

No, really, posting (because I HAVE to, you realize) as yet another American, this time from the Great State of Texas. South Central TX, in fact. Nothing like South Central L.A. Ancestry is pretty much half Mexican, half Spanish, though there are little tiny bits of a couple of other cultures in me. Second generation American; all grandparents emigrated from Mexico, though my mother's parents were pure Spanish in ancestry (long, drawn out explanation).

Fuckin' hippy. I'm a Wisconsin separatist, living in Chicago with plans to hijack a plane and fly it into the new Soldier Field. Or maybe i'll just hang around telling tasteless jokes, I'm not sure yet.

'Australia Australia Australia We Love You. Amen.'

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm Finnish, though I have no strong feelings for this place I was born. I guess it could be worse, though. At least we have free health care, free child care, national pension, governmental aid for students, free colleges and universities etc. If I'd born in some ultra-capitalist country I wouldn't probably have gotten this far (I'm an university student) due to my working-class background.
