What is your favorite mode of transportation for longer distances (say, outside of your hometown, places you couldn't easily walk or bicycle to)?

train all the way. i don't drive, i'm not really a keen (and certainly not frequent) flyer. boats are great but i've never been on a hovercraft.

I like trains best though, really.

This thread is totally going to save ILX. Good work, Nick.

Depends. If time isn't a factor nothing beats a road trip. But if I only have a week off, driving to and from, say, LA would take up more than half of that time off. Which is fine LA isn't the only place between here and there I'd want to spend much time in.

BUMP!

Oh! We did not see this thread!

We have developped an awful Fear of Flying since 9/11. So planes are out. We hate hate hate tubes, but Trains are pretty cool. However, boats - especially canal boats! - win hands down.

I've developed a fear of boats since that whole USS Maine thing.

I like cars most, as long as I'm not going really really far and I've got someone else going with me. You can work at your own schedule and can stop whenever and wherever you want. You can pick the pace as well. You can actually see things that you pass. It's the cheapest.

Trains are second best. They can be really slow, but you can sit back and relax, you can still see some stuff, and you don't have to freak out about crashing.

I like planes less and less. They make me really nervous, even though I know nothing bad will happen. In the US, the environment inside the plane is hellish and the service is terrible. Your flight WILL be delayed or cancelled. Of course, the big plus is that it tends to be fastest.

I've never taken a boat anywhere. I think it could be kind of fun, but the thought of being out in the middle of the ocean on a boat freaks me out, and I think I would get seasick.

Rickshaw

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally. I used to live in New Delhi, and they have rickshaws there, which I never rode in because they made me feel bad, but they also have autorickshaws, which are basically like motorcycle type things with a bench on the back and a little cover over them. They were even cheaper than the already ridiculously cheap taxis. They were awesome.

mmm, tuk-tuks

chris (chris), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Hrmmm. I keep thinking about various ferry disasters and things. And yet, still. I love boats best of all. I want a canal boat. Though I don't quite fancy "legging it" through the Islington Tunnel.

(I miss hovercrafts, too. Is it true they no longer run to France? If I were really going to invade France, I'd do it with hovercrafts!)
