I have forgotten how to write

I was doing some big stupid list thing project for my blog (sum up all the songs on my Mix Challenge CD in two sentences) and it was off to a good start and now I seem to have run into a brick wall of sorts and am staring at an unfinished sentence about Christine McVie. And I'm looking at the successive tracks on the playlist and am completely fucking blank. I don't know if yelling at people about the Strokes on ILM has broken my head or what. I know there's probably some other writers' block threads here but I don't know what to do anyways, and I think right now I'm just typing without thinking and that's not turning out very well.

argh

(i am not drunk or high, for real. maybe i'm mildly panicky.)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 6 November 2003 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought this was going to be a trayce thread for a sec!

I don't have much in the way of advice, but maybe as a bit of encouragement, Nate, I've always really dug your writing and I'm excited to see where you go with this project.

I second jaymc! (possibly most useless post on this thread but 4 real, dawg, I've read hipster detritus since the pitas-days and I'm seriously stoked to see where you go with this.) as for advice: don't sweat it, just remember that we are thousands of hungry patrin-groupies out here hanging on to your every word.

Hahahah! I think you're right though argh :(

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not doing anymore of this lists-o-writing-stuff bullshit. Feels too much like stuffing envelopes or assembling boxes. Takes too damned long to go through 170 songs and comment about all of them, and it takes all the enjoyment out of thinking about music for me in the first place.

Now I'm a bit screwed.

nate i never knew how to write and people PAY me to do it. just coast.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

it's all smoke and mirrors anyway

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(pay no attention to the man behind the byline)

ozzo wizardington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

No no no, it's like... well, it's weird. I have no problem whatsoever for writing for editors because that way I feel assured that if there's something glaringly inane in the article then I will be asked to reword it; if there's something half-formed I'll get suggestions on how to flesh it out; if the structure is wobbly it'll get bolstered upright. Blogging is, at least for me right now, a bit too chaotic for me to work my head around.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

if only you could channel your desire to write about not being able to write into desire for writing...

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

desire has nothing to do with it; inspiration does, and right now I'm in "oh fuck I have nothing to say that hasn't been said already" ultra-panic mode.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

So say it again but make allusions to naked teens getting it on with rabbits.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

christ, no

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, do people still listen to the Moldy Peaches?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I was having this problem awhile back, and solved it by basically saying less about albums. I just say what I really want to say and not worry about whether or not I said EVERYTHING about it.

There's nothing wrong with having nothing to say about Christine McVie. This is really all I've ever had to say about her.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Pick something else equally ludicrous, then. Anything to get over the writer's block. Get the words flowing, then switch back to your actual topic once you get a rhythm.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Set yourself a little writing challenge where what you write actually doesn't matter, by the time you've done it your subconscious'll be up and running again and the block will have gone.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(well, it always works for me)

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

nate i want 1000 words on mini-kiss on my desk by 9 am

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

that sort of thing

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I still listen to the Moldy Peaches. They're fucking great.
Take a cue from Mr. 'Nym and just write a haiku about each one. Or even more to the point, quit trying to write THEE DEFINITIVE SENTENCEORTWO about each and just go nuts. "The flying cymbal took the top of my head off, which was fine since I needed a haircut" type shit. I mean, it's a blog, dude.
