the beautiful game

So many good things happened in the champions league last night, they deserve a thread of their own:

Deportivo have 60% of the play against Monaco.... and lose 8-3 8-3!!!!!

The most ridiculous headbutt ever gets the victim sent off

And possibly the most beautiful chipped goal I've ever seen.

chris (chris), Thursday, 6 November 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

My boys! I was so pleased with my text updates that I didn't mind too much that I had to sit through the boring arsenal match, rather than watching my beloved boys.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 6 November 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

More highlights

Juventus' pink shirts

Deportivo's hideous shirts

chris (chris), Thursday, 6 November 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Magnus Hedman calling his entire defence "F*cking Pr*cks" after failing to mop up his penalty and subsequent rebound save. Great first half display by the hoops though. I wish Liam Miller was Scottish.

Jonnie, Thursday, 6 November 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It shouldn't have been a penalty in the first place, the foul was outside the box.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 6 November 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Monaco vs Deportivo second half commentary.

Kevin Keatings: "Bryan, what do you make of Deportivo's goalkeeper?"
Bryan Hamilton: "Well, he's from Uruguay"

Ahh, so that's why it's 8-3.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 6 November 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Highlights made a big thing of his name - Manua

chris (chris), Thursday, 6 November 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched the Deportivo game, but I only saw three goals. Every time I got up to go to the toilet, somebody scored. I'm worried about the state of my bladder.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sepp Bladder

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

magic goal conjuring bladder more like.

chris (chris), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

10 shots. 8 go in. That's the kind of ratio any small-town chavver stalking the nightclub dancefloor would be proud of.

Alex K (Alex K), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I enjoyed the big fight right at the end too.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe I missed all this. And I don't even have the satisfaction of starting a Laugh At The Arsenal thread... yet.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Arsenal might just beat Inter

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Inter looked woeful last night

chris (chris), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night was tremendous, I presume you mean Giovanni's goal Chris.

I was in the pub watching the highlights and all 6 of us were like "lob him, lob him, lob him" and god he lobbed him.

The headbutt was fantastic, the funniest thing in football in some time.

I wish Liam Miller was Scottish.

I wish.........oh wait!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Giovanni indeed, a beautiful thing, kind of flicked up instead of struck

chris (chris), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

wht a player tht boy liam miller is.

and the boy larsson's no slouch.

good to see hartson's match fat.

tht was as good a first half performance from CELT as i've ever seen. economy.

larsson's glancing header ws a thing of beauty. (i LOVE glancing headers!)

korsgaard (Cozen), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's that running through the Depor defence to add an eighth in the corner? Well, rim my ring, if it isn't Edouard Cisse.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

He'd have been wasted in the Nationwide.

Jonnie, Thursday, 6 November 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

SHL's first looked offside to me. But who gives one? And Bobo didn't even touch the bloke, who clearly tripped over his own feet. And why the fuck was the Irish pub I was in showing the bloody gooners? Gah.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Stockport beat Wrexham 5-4 last night. In, erm, Group N of the Champions League.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Celtic - Bayern is going to be some game. I can hardly wait. Anyone up for it?

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Tranmere draw 6-6 (after extra time) with someone in what may well have been the Autoglass Trophy sometime in the late 80s? My low-imagination Googling yielded nowt. I presume they had a first-to-seven with a two-goal lead penalty tie-breaker.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh ('is that henrik larsson? is he really dead?' 'nah, tht's God, he thks he's henrik larsson!') henrik's goal did look a bit suspicious but WAHEY.

(rsc anderlecht: team of happy-shopper big names:

baseggio - baggio
aruna - acuna
um - other ones)

celtic will beat bayern i thk. i mean, they should have in munich and celtic are a bit better at home (63 unbeaten!).

korsgaard (Cozen), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I can see super Johnny Hartson lamping Ballack in that game. Dunno why, maybe it's more of a desire than a premonition.

Jonnie, Thursday, 6 November 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Referee : "You both fell over, so you're both equally to blame! i will book both of you!"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 November 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus H Christ... as an Inter fan, I'm slowly sinking further and further into desperation. The team looks disinterested, Zaccheroni is the least inspired new managerial appointment in history, we've taken 1 point off a team who are basically minnows in two matches, and we're already 7 points off the Scudetto lead, only two months in.

Brilliant.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 6 November 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, but Javier Zanetti. I'd fist Michael Howard if it meant he would come to Upton Park

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 6 November 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It's gotta be worth a try, G.

The Rankin' Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 6 November 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oi! Barry Lasagne! I can see you masquerading there!

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 6 November 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Who the groin is Barry Lasagne?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

try and keep up G

chris (chris), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Juninho's free-kick for Lyon was extraordinary.
Van der Vaart's second for Ajax on Tuesday night was a beautiful goal, but ITV preferred to chat to Clive 'platitude' Allen than show it.
The Sky Sports News reporter pronounce Giuly like the month after June.
I'm thrilled for my Olympiakos-supporting pal. He's been telling me for weeks that they've been unlucky and not getting the results their performances have deserved.
What price Arsenal to beat Inter and then lose to Lokomotiv?
Some wild away kits indeed. The person who designs these things must have a ball (and presumably earn a fortune).

Daniel (dancity), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Apologies, I'm not feeling myself today.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

that makes a change

chris (chris), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That Deportivo kit looks like a bad supermarket

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

the kit looks like a supermarket?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite liked that Pink Juve kit though, close up it's kinda dogtooth. The Monaco kit iis very stylish and striking though, simple, not too fussy

chris (chris), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

yes like the logo of a bad supermarket. Kilian on an aside have you gone to shorthand much this semester?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"yes like the logo of a bad supermarket"

That makes sense, actually. Calm is restored to the world of kilian.

[yes i have. the teacher (i will use the word teacher, not lecturer) assumed you'd left the course! now that i've got the textbook, i plan not to go much, and just practice myself.]

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah she will be assuming further I think cos there is 28 minutes to class and I am at home eating pizza in my underwear.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

(I hope once I get the book it'll be ok)

Back to football, sorry ILE.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Lyon's away kit got the thumbs up in the pub I was in last night. I thought it bit too Crystal Palarse myself, but it was quite pleasing and neat and clean.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The Monaco one was very old school I thought, not in a football kit sense though. Almost Kraftwerkian.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

efficient - ruthlessly so

chris (chris), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Diego Tristan cost me a fortune last night. I had 8-2 on my betting slip.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Happy Shopper used to have a brown white and orangey colour scheme did they not? A bit like the Deportivo away kit.
I think I'm right in saying that pink was Juve's original shirt colour before they got some kits off Notts County and changed to black and white stripes, so their new away kit is a fruity homage to their humble beginnings.

Jonnie, Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the deal with the lights out before the match in Monaco? Did someone forget to take their parking ticket with them?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

that's very true JD

chris (chris), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Rothen is gonna hit it big very soon (altho I've know that for a while thanks to CM3..)

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Among all this, we might note that Chelsea's result the night before, winning 4-0 in Lazio, is one of the great results for English teams in this competition.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's typical that I miss ALL of this due to deciding to go and watch fireworks instead, but successfully managed to see every moment of Liverpool and Steaua Bucharest sloshing through 90 minutes of sodden marshy tedium... except Djimi Traore's goal. Beautiful game my arse.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too, Matt - the other stuff was on Sky, and I wasn't up for the pub last night.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 6 November 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i only saw the chelsea match and highlights of the other matches from the last two nights, but jesus, there was some good football played
great to see duff and miller doing so well...

robin (robin), Thursday, 6 November 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I was warning friends that just because Groclin were unknown didn't mean they were no good. City were lobbing it forward in desperation towards the end. Enjoyed the brass band, though.

Daniel (dancity), Thursday, 6 November 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"It could have been 6-6!"

the pinefox, Friday, 7 November 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinefox in the dream I had about you last night you were playing "the beautiful game." I wrote about it on the "Recently on ILX dreams" thread.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 8 November 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

*magic goal conjuring bladder more like*

Sounds like an idea for the next Playstation advert.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Saturday, 8 November 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

There's not quite enough on this thread about the ENORMOUS gulf in class between Man U and Rangers on Tuesday night. Because Rangers really did look several shades below woeful.

Yay Celtic (though Hedman has a cheek shouting at his defenders as we'd be in a way better position in the group had he not done his comedy David Seaman impression in Munich). I have a ticket for Celtic v Bayern and I am very excited indeed.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 8 November 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

So many good things happened in the champions league last night, they deserve a thread of their own:

Ahem...This is the thread for the Champions League 2003
