Lying: the parlor game of micro expressions

Derren Brown swears by micro expressions. (You can read what he has to say about them in one of the links, below). But, then, Darren Brown makes a show-biz living out of being able to determine when volunteers from his audience are lying, and therefore it's entirely possible he would keep to himself the meat of how lie detecting is done, for the sake of his career. The concept of 'Micro expressions' may simply be what Darren Brown decides to offer the public as a gimmicky tantalizer - something to mess around with, and associate with his celebrity, like the 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' board game (we all say 'we don't want to give you that' whilst playing it - parroting the catchphrase of the TV host - but we don't get to win the money, ever.); Does Darren Brown offer micro expressions, like the devil has given us a ouija board, merely hinting at his power? Or perhaps he is hoping to exploit the fact that once ordinary people realise that micro expressions don't work for them, at least not as potently as they do for him on the stage, they will conclude what the performer is always careful to deny: so, Darren Brown must be a mind reader, after all?

Has anyone here resorted to micro expressions as a way of telling if someone's lying? How can one, in cases where there's so much at stake, justify relying on a rumour-mongering micro expression over what someone, often a loved one, is saying - i.e, if after asking your wife if they have ever been unfaithful, you then *think* you see her fleetingly nod an apparent affirmative, when actually saying ''no'' in reply, can you assume she has been unfaithful? Micro expressions may be a parlour game, where we get to experience virtually what's it's like to be a scientific lie-detective, where we get to feel the dubious exhilaration of subjecting a loved one to the kind of scrutiny the micro expression-process demands; but should we use any gossamer, supposedly incriminating, signals to inform our choices: if I thought my loved one had been unfaithful, I might well decide to end the relationship.

Micro-expressions are well established, by no means an invention of Derren Brown's.

I think the guy beside me in this internet cafe knows that I don't like his shirt.

Micro-expressions? Very interesting. But why not just go through their pockets, steal their mail, download a keyboard-logger, and follow them home? A much more satisfying way to prove the tart's at it.
