Have you ever received a special commendation, civic award, honorary degree, or some other such something?

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

My high school drumline won state.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I aced the PSATs.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Then you should've been in the running for National Merit Scholar, no?

oops (Oops), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

ONTARIO SCHOLAR RIGHT HERE BITCHES

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

excellence?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

but to tell you the truth the only reason I got an award was because only two or three other people graduated from my high school that year. I got it by default.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

it was de fault of de high school's poor attendance!

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

In the running? ppft!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

And as of yet, it's ruined my life through making me feel smarter than I really am.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

< /phony self-pity >

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

And, let me guess S1utsky... you just got this award, right? Congrats!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

$50,000 Presidential Scholarship. Which I'm now struggling to hold onto. Yay!

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

s1utsky, admit it- this is just all about you, isn't it?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

how do you get a presidential scholarship? do you have to know the president?

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Hoo-Boy. Nothing like remembering the accomplishments of years ago. I won quite a few MMTA (minnesota music teachers assoc.) piano competitions in grade school. Too bad I disliked piano until late jr. high.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd need to get a lot more than $50,000 to be chummy with the President.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 7 November 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

but it's a start!

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 7 November 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

how do you get a presidential scholarship? do you have to know the president?

If by "know" you mean "send nude pictures to," then yes, I do know the president. I also got an $10,000 Enron scholarship.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Friday, 7 November 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(for "an," read "a")

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Friday, 7 November 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got a $100 check in the mail from Pacific Gas & Electricity! I can cash it on the proviso that I "just keep [my] fucking mouth shut about everything".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 November 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got a big fat bill. maybe I'll them I was an ontario scholar.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 7 November 2003 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

did they burn down your house or something?!?

rob geary (rgeary), Friday, 7 November 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, I won the Governor General's Bronze Medallion when I graduated high school, mostly because the other person that might have won got B's in science courses while I was getting A's in shop and Grade 11 accounting.

Poppy (poppy), Friday, 7 November 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I graduated with the highest GPA in my high school class of like 400 people, but it was through a complicated technicality that made it literally impossible for anyone else to have that high of a GPA. It pissed off the hyper-achieving cadre who had all been jockeying for position though, so that was funny.

Dan I., Friday, 7 November 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

the only thing i excelle and gets excited about is "SHIT"

mark s (mark s), Friday, 7 November 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

gbrl, Friday, 7 November 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to remember winning some sort of academic awards in high school. I guess I was loved.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I won an award in Grade 11, but I never found out what for, because I was too cool to go to the awards banquet and didn't even know I'd been nominated. A few weeks into the summer I got a book in the mail.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

CECIL VENNER MUSIC PRIZE! Suck me!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 8 November 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Smokin' Joe Frazier: "Webster's dictionary defines excellence
as 'the state or condition of being excellent.' And now, the winner
of the First Annual Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding
Achievement in the Field of Excellence..."

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Saturday, 8 November 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i won a cord of firewood once for my excellence in raffle-ticket-buying!

jones (actual), Saturday, 8 November 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh. I also lost shitty little game of Bingo I ever played during my entire life until I played it on a cruise ship and won $150. So, yeah, losing all those Book Club free posters during elementary school doesn't seem so bad in retrospect.

Did anyone's high school have a vague "top 100 students" thing? The strangest part of it was that your parents had to nominate you. Didn't seem fair to me at the time, but I was also happy to have such loving, caring parents.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 8 November 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

if i had been arsed to do so, i could've graduated undergrad with honors in my majors. but i wasn't, so i didn't.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 8 November 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

it's kinda my fault but I was hoping someone would pipe up and tell us they won some sorta mayor's award

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 8 November 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

AP* Scholar

*not Advanced Placement like you'd think, but AZN PRIDE, CHIGGA!!!!

L(E^24) (Leee), Saturday, 8 November 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And one summer I won my friends' Cool Award[tm].

L(E^24) (Leee), Saturday, 8 November 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i was actually chosen to present flowers to hrm THE QUEEN on behalf of my school when very very small, but looking back at pictures of me in my "best clothes" i think my selection may have been some kind of dickensian fuck you on somebody's part

jones (actual), Saturday, 8 November 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 8 November 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I won a book for some sort of writing award in high school. And a $100 music award for "best personality" or something.

I am also Pi Delta Phi. I think I still have my pin somewhere.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 8 November 2003 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 8 November 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

4th Grade Spelling Bee Champion!

Aaron A., Saturday, 8 November 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

5th grade spelling bee champion here!

Also won various school-wide academic awards throughout my schooling life.

Also National Merit Scholar finalist.

Also National Hispanic Merit Scholar.

Also tempted to fill out the unsolicited paperwork to get into the "Who's Who in American High School Students" but decided paying $40 for some hardcover book that would mean very little to me in the end wasn't really my idea of fun. (I was tight even then.)

Also graduated cum laude with my first degree.

Scholarships! (Though didn't need them where I wound up.)

And look. Miss Banality, right here for your examination. ;)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 8 November 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread seems like bragging. Also, it makes me depressed because there was a time in my life in which I could be reliably counted on to earn various academic awards, prizes, scholarships, etc., but I no longer receive that kind of validation, and in fact, last month I got a mediocre-to-poor performance evaluation at work because I'm "not meeting [my] potential," which yeah, I kinda agree with, but it's because, in the long term, I'd rather be writing papers than copyediting textbooks, bitches!

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 8 November 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

phi beta kappa.

typo acapulco (gcannon), Saturday, 8 November 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a Lego Master Builder's Badge, but everyone got them.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 8 November 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, a thread where there is little to do but brag, so I'll let myself go. I was told, possibly inaccurately, that I had the most A Level points of anyone who had ever gone to my university, where I was top of the class all the way through and got a First. This was De Montfort University, mind, not Cambridge, where I originally went and didn't stay. I got some prizes at school too, but it was kind of universally acknowledged by the sixth form that I was denied lots I had earned because the teachers disliked me (I was a clown/subversive, and most of it was consciously directed at undermining and insulting the staff) - since that made me popular with my fellow pupils, I preferred that to a few extra book tokens. I've had my IQ measured at over 200. I am apparently the world's best player of Minesweeper snd Space Cadet Pinball (I expect this isn't true, and I'd be interested if anyone knows of world records anywhere on the web - the only ones I've found are worse than me).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 8 November 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

really I just wanted to know if anyone had been voted citizen of the year or something! but then I brought up that stupid high school stuff, so really I am to blame for everything.
