so i bought something on ebay. it's been 3 weeks and it hasn't shown up yet. the seller has been good about getting back to me and claims she sent the item. her track record is good (99.8% positive on 556 transactions) and the item may indeed have gotten lost in the mail.
but... what should i do? request a refund? wait longer? (it's being sent from the states so it really should be here now)? report the seller?

Last Xmas I mailed a thing I sold via eBay to a guy in Montreal. Sent it Dec. 18 and it got there Jan. 7. BUT that was around Xmas.
― Abbott, Monday, 5 May 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)
i once had a record show up five weeks after it was sent. was this item sent media mail?
― omar little, Monday, 5 May 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)
not sure - she's gonna dig up the receipts.
― s1ocki, Monday, 5 May 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)
I would report her at about 8 weeks. Sometimes shit gets hung up over the pond.

I get CDs in the mail I ordered a month ago sometimes, and I've totally forgotten about ordering them.
Yeah, sometimes zombie Hoffa swims up and nabs discs.
― libcrypt, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)
If it's coming from the US to UK then I'd sit tight for a while.
I recently ordered from Forced Exposure (so pretty much 100% reliable) and the CDs took nearly 5 weeks to make it, and that was via Airmail. Almost everything turns up a lot quicker than that (as in 1-2 weeks), but sometimes stuff just seems to get caught up somewhere in the system.
― krakow, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 06:43 (seventeen years ago)
i once sold an LP on ebay for 120 UK pounds.. Sent the record off, and it came back 2 weeks later saying 'no longer at this address'. Tried emailing the guy but got no response.
I still have the record...
― Jack Battery-Pack, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 07:07 (seventeen years ago)
Well, that's something!
Go to the ebay 'dispute' section, eventually you will get your cost of advert back (if not postage, obv)

Don't raise a discrepancy.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)
I just bought something and got a message saying "Hi, Thanks for your quick payment. If you leave us a 5-Star positive feedback now, we will upgrade your shipping from Royalmail standard (3 business days within UK or 3-7 days within Europe) to DHL Next Day Service (1 day within UK or 2-3 days within Europe) and also give you a £15 discount code for your next order"
I'm not doing this! Aside from the attempted subversion of the honest feedback principle, it annoys me because there's no time limit specified on it, so I've no idea how long they'll delay sending it out via Royal Mail while they wait for a response. I suppose I could message them "no thanks".
― Alba, Monday, 30 June 2008 13:13 (seventeen years ago)
ha!
"If you leave us a positive feedback now, we'll forget all about sending you anything, and you can't do a thing about it haha ner de ner ner"

Thing is, they're a Power Seller with thousands of sales and none of the negative feedback they've had mentions this scam. Either other people don't care or they've only just started trying it.
― Alba, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:14 (seventeen years ago)
This is a £650 camera and I think I'll wait till I receive it (or um, don't) before making waves. You'd think this kind of thing would either be outlawed or more common.
― Alba, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)
are you going to leave them negative feedback?
― czn, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)
"+++++ click here to see my REAL feedback for this sale" (and then link to a "best seller ever until I get the package" page and update it to "I was blackmailed into this - avoid" as soon as you get their +++++ back)
― StanM, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)
x-post
that would be Ebay Justice
I'm also worried because it says "Royal Mail standard" where their page says "Every package we ship is gift wrapped, insured, and trackable.", which doesn't sound like Royal Mail standard to me.
Anyway, I should just relax.
― Alba, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)
Go along with it so you get the camera and their feedback and report them to The Man afterwards
― StanM, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)
I'm not going along with it but I'm not reporting them yet either. I messaged them just saying no thanks and repeating their "Every package we ship is gift wrapped, insured, and trackable." back to them.
Sellers don't leave feedback any more, I don't think.
― Alba, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)
They can only leave 'positive' feedback.
― Mark G, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)
when you get the camera, use it to take a picture of them. then you'll be protected.
― s1ocki, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)
I just got a reply saying "We will ship it out to you immediately. thank you for your email. Have a nice day!". Now I feel bad about snitching. They wished me a nice day!
― Alba, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe it was one person in a big organisation's 'bright idea'
― Mark G, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)
i bet the "have a nice day" was said in the same tone as a bad guy in an action movie when he executes a henchman
― s1ocki, Monday, 30 June 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)
Oh no. Do you think "we will ship it out to you immediately" was delivered in a sniggering "they got us working in shifts!" Big Lebowski tone?
― Alba, Monday, 30 June 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)
they'll send you the carpet, but now they'll have to pee on it first :-(

btw this is the first thing that i've ever bought on ebay! >:(
I would email him first, a lot of the time sellers are willing to refund or replace.

I recently sold FFVII for the PC on ebay.they paid $40 + $4 shipping fees = $44
but this is how money I lose from the $44-$4.50 actual shipping fee (I had to buy insurance because I don't want to get scammed)-$3.65 ebay fee ($3.50 final value fee, $.15 listing with additional picture fee)-$1.58 pay pal fee= $34.27
So basically because I sold my item via ebay I lost (40-34.27=) $5.73 from the actual winning bid.Was it worth it? I suppose it would be hard to sell FFVII used for $34.27 anywhere else

Amen to that. Bought an expedit bookcase, have been waiting 3 weeks to collect it, guy says he can't get into his old flat to retrieve it. Yet he sold a table and that buyer's left positive feedback. Now not answering my emails. Think he's trying to renege on the deal but doesn't have the balls to say so.
― State Attorney Foxhart Cubycheck (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 09:15 (fifteen years ago)
If you see an inaccurate listing do you ever report it or send a message to the seller? Or do you think caveat emptor, if someone buys this it's their fault for not doing the research?
I never bother doing anything but tutting, but sometimes I think I should complain more.
― Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 20 November 2015 14:42 (ten years ago)
Dude buys hundreds of dollars worth of library music from us.Immediately messages to beg for a post-auction discount, claiming he didn't know it'd be that expensive. Is told "no," writes back "BRUTAL, MAN!"Says he'll pay... sometime. Finally pays, a week late, we ship. Now claims there's a COD fee for $116 on the package. Well, A package, he hasn't opened it yet. Asks for another refund for the fee on the package that may or may not be the one we sent, says if his wife finds out he's "DEAD MEAT."
...and now he's lying and saying the package was "severely damaged" and "missing records" and threatening to complain to eBay and PayPal. Anyone have advice for getting ahead of this before he lies us out of hundreds of dollars?
