the BBC's 6 'new' channels

this strikes me as a very daft choice of campaign. i'm seeing the billboard ads all over town, but a) none of these channels are new having been launched as they were around 18 months ago i think) and b) the colourful monkeys/Brady Bunch theme suggests the ad is just for one or both of the children's channels. closer scrutiny may reveal some vague association with each channel based on the six monkey's facial expressions (one has a big gaping child-like smile, one is serious and somewhat brooding etc.) but this isn't too obvious. it's hard to see this campaign being successful in directly driving more people into getting a Freeview box (or cable or digital). I just wondered if anyone else had noticed the ads everywhere, or talk about other promotional campaigns you feel are completely misjudged.

Just be glad they got rid of the Suzi Perry advert.

The Nuremberg rallies were an exciting breath of fresh air at the time, but yeah, ultimately misjudged.

Don't be giving Suzi Perry gip, she's luuuuvly.

Did Colin McRae win that one?

The habit of showing Saab ads twice in a row in independant cinemas is really annoying. Oddly the Orange Film Commission skits are much less annoying than the previous orange ads. The new Spike Lee one is good.

Roy Schneider's speechlessness at the concept of film noir in colour is a little narrow minded, I felt.

i'm not sure about the Orange one. doesn't it make Orange look bad really? like they don't really care about films, i mean we know they don't but shouldn't they be trying to convince us they do rather than just admitting it outright?

The advert where she advertises Freeview is horrific, tho. She reads the whole thing off cue cards - true, so do most people, but nothing like as obviously as she does - "You. Can now get six. New. BBC channels. On cable. Satellite. And Digital. And now, on. Freeview. There is no. Subscription, just a one. Off. Payment..." etc.. She gets up, walks slowly across from the sofa to the television, slowly plugs in the Freeview box, then goes through the six channels that are available (though I think she only mentions five - highlight being "There's even. Two new channels. For the little ones.")... plus the set looks like a DFS showroom. The whole thing just seems deeply to have the general agenda of "Old person, soon you die, but now nice lady will show you how to get News 24 so you can feel glad you don't live in Algeria." Ugh. Horrible.

The point is they are telling us to TURN OFF OUR PHONES (Don't let a mobile phone spoil your movie - see they are spoil Roy's admittedly rubbish sounding Columbian Connection).

But yes, Scheider and Enrique have similar rockist views on noir I think.

News 24 is bloody awful, except for Talking Movies

The guy who plays the head of the Orange committee in those adverts has some of the best comic timing I've seen at the cinema for ages. Anybody have any idea who it is?

And there's a new one with Spike Lee? I always assumed the next guy to do one would be Benicio Del Toro, if only so we could get a "Flip yah. Flip yah fo' real"

If you look closely at the Roy Scheider one (which i have, since I've seen it about 40 times) the "Film Orange" bits are actually dubbed on, the lips don't sync exactly. The poor girl who sits at the end though. Well she ever get a line?
