..About the moon-a and the June-a and the spring-a!
I love to sing-a,
About a sky of blue-a, or a tea for two-a,
Anything-a with a swing-a to an "I love you-a,"
I love-a to, I love-a to sing!

Give me a song-a
About a son-a gun that went and done her wrong-a.
But keep it clean-a,
With a cottage small-a by a waterfall-a,
Any sob-a that will throb-a to a bluebird's call-a,
I love, I love to sing!

I was born a singin' fool-a,
Lah-de-dah!
Ol' Major Bowes is gonna spot me..
Got through Yale with boula-boula,
Lah-de-dah!
Old microphone's got me!

I love to sing-a,
I love to wake up with the south-a in my mouth-a,
And wave a flag-a,
With a cheer for Uncle Sammy and another for my mammy,
I love to sing!

This cartoon is a piece of my childhood. I have not seen it in decades and yet the thread title was a sufficient give away for me. To wit:

Drink to me only with thine eyes
and I will pledge with mine.
Or leave a kiss within the cup
and I'll not ask for wine.

A lovely song, really. Unless sung nasally, flatted. I was not taken in, even as a child.

I love that cartoon. Especially the old rabbi owl father :

"OY! He wants to sing! GET OUT!!"

HOORAY!

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 9 November 2003 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the Al Jolson version is crisply stiffer - though burning with energy, possible rage
wotta shame about his and Ruby Keeler's marriage

one of the musicals Ruby was in, Dames, features the original "I Only Have Eyes For You"

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 9 November 2003 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been looking for this song forever

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Sunday, 9 November 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Why the hell has Mark E. Smith not sung this?

Can you really hear him, even sarcastically, saying:

'A cheer for Uncle Sammy and another for my mammy'?

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 9 November 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

applause

Ferg (Ferg), Sunday, 9 November 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Stranger has occurred in Fall-world. (Opening of "The Classical" to thread.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 9 November 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)
