mahagonny, after seeing the 35mm print in the theater, i don't see the duchamp connection? anyone? and did anyone else think that ginsberg's apperance was a distraction? did you find the four screen split less as enjoyable as the 2 screen split as i did?

I saw this with Mary some months back, actually. can't say I "got" it or that it was particularly entertaining even, but...interesting nevertheless. < /"Idon'tknowanythingaboutartIjustknowwhatIlike">

post it on friday, back today at my temp assignment. i saw it at the castro in SF. i'm with matos, i don't know anything either about art.
the part with ginsberg bugged me, the brecht/weil opera was great of course, i just tried to take it all in at as many levels as i could pickup. this was the first showing of the restored 35mm print combining the four seperate films, which were supposed to be shown on four pool tables in a boxing ring....

My roommate just lucked the fuck out and got "American Magus" from the local library and promptly copied every page of it because I can't afford to spend $160 on a copy of this out of print book. Anyways in it there are a few (?) shots from this film and confirmation that 9 minutes of it exists. I did a little research and I think these 9 minutes have been shown from time to time in recent retrospectives in New York.

Honestly I want nothing more than a remastered DVD of all Harry's available film works but have been getting along fine w youtube/soulseek/bt searches over the years.

Has anyone thrown down the 50 dollars for the DVDs on the archives site? I don't understand why they are selling 3 different $50 discs since the material should all fit on one. Is the quality unimaginably awesome?

Seriously, you could include all the Early Abstractions, Late Superimpositions, Heaven & Earth Magic, and a nice DVD-only bonus of the 9 minutes of Tin Man's Dream!

That book is really incredible though. I guess Heaven & Earth Magic was originally hours long and in full color!

Is that new book the Getty just put out any good? (Harry Smith - The Avant-Garde in the American Vernacular)

I need a Harry Smith book.

Trip Maker, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know. Yeah the books are all out of print and upwards of $100 used. We lucked out because a local library had a copy. I recommend doing a library search online.

Haven't read any other books. Just netflixed disc 2 of the "Harry Smith Project" tribute thing. Disc 1 has concert footage and disc 2 is a documentary, though it is interspersed with some godawful and grotesque renditions of old folk songs by the likes of Elvis Costello and David Johansen. Still, it has 3 of his abstract films in full as DVD extras...

Those folks renditions tho....it's like BluesHammer 2000. *cringe*
