What is the most valuable material thing you have ever lost?

Not by misfortune (accident or crime) but by own sheer bloody thickheadedness.

The reason I ask is because I think - not know, but *think* - that I've managed to completely and beyond hope misplace a plane ticket worth 350 euro. After hours of searching the thing still hasn't turned up. It was a gift, to boot. I've not given up yet but I'm feeeling grim about the prospects.

So, ILX0rs, to make me feel ever so slightly a bit better, tell me about the shit *you've* managed to lose in your day.

I can't keep a watch to save my life

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

a human heart.

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I lost a plane ticket at one point. I was in New Zealand at the time. Seeing that I was leaving for Chicago the next day, it was rather anxiety-provoking. Naturally, it turned up after I had given up looking for it.

The worst thing I ever lost though was a pair of my mom's earrings--valuable in themselves but especially so because she'd gotten them as a gift from a friend who'd died since. She'd lent them to me (why the fuck would you lend valuable stuff to a 13 year old?). I decided that I didn't want to wear them after all, because I was afraid of losing them. So I wrapped them up and put them somewhere...and then I lost them. I was really young at the time, but I've still always felt bad about that.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Most importantly my sanity. Long gone john.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Twice now in life I've lost one shoe: once, at 12, I did a dance performance and went to put my shoes on and one was gone, and again earlier this year, I passed out and woke up with it gone. ha ha

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

about twelve years ago I ordered a cheeseburger at this bar and paid for it upfront and then me and my friend left (I was a bit drunk) before I got the cheeseburger and sometimes I'll drive by that bar and think 'man, they owe me a cheeseburger'

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I've mentioned this on some thread before, but I once left a piece of original Jack Kirby artwork, worth a bundle even then, on a train. But I got it back from British Rail Lost Property hurrah!

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My father lost his wedding ring while swimming on holiday.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

did your mother comically club him over the head with a rolling pin?

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

What book were you reading when you received the plane ticket gift? You'll have used it as a bookmark, probably.

C J (C J), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i lost my weekly metrocard last nite - which isn't so valuable but when you only got $60 in the bank.... :(

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

CJ: I was reading the Satanic Bible. But it's not in there, regrettably. :(

Part of the problem is that there is like a two-month span during which this thing could conceivably gotten lost, cuz I recieved it back in late August and immediately put it in my "can't be losing this shit, for real" storage place. And now, when I *need* it, IT'S NOT FUCKING THERE. Everything *else* is, though. Every single thing I need to be careful with. BUT NOT THE FUCKING TICKET.

I feel a bit better having read blount's cheeseburger story though, that shit is fucking harsh, man!

deathisahedgehog (deathisahedgehog), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it folded inside your passport?

C J (C J), Sunday, 9 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope.

deathisahedgehog (deathisahedgehog), Sunday, 9 November 2003 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

a flight to the new york city.

a sleepyshy speck o' sillysnow, Sunday, 9 November 2003 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow.

I think the most valuable thing I ever lost was a pair of earrings worth $10. I found them, though, in a purse I hadn't been using for several months at that time. Still, nothing as bad as whole airline tickets or the like. I'd probably keel over if that were the case.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 9 November 2003 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i lost a plane ticket once, when i contacted the airline they said i needed to buy a new one.
i called them back half an hour later & told them it had been in a bag that had been stolen. all of a sudden their attitude changed and i got a free plane ticket.
dumbasses.

joni (joni), Sunday, 9 November 2003 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's not that I lost it, but.....

In 1989, right before I graduated from college, my grandfather passed away, which was quite sad (as these things usually are). My grandmother gave me his wristwatch, which was quite nice. It was nice to the point that it wasn't something that a ratty-haird twenty-one year old with a penchant for wearing tattered Sisters of Mercy t-shirts should really be seen wearing, so I kept it in a box on my desk. My housemate Ed had an early job interview to goto, however, and asked if he could borrow the watch, as -- once again -- it looked nice. Somewhat reluctantly, I said yes. In the remaining hustle and bustle of the last few weeks of school, I somehow forgot to ask for it back (as he somehow forgot to give it back). In the weeks following graduation (when he went back to Jersey and I came home to NYC), I kept pestering him to give it back.....and in due course, he sheepishly confessed to me that he lost it somewhere. I've never seen it since.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 9 November 2003 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

oh that's awful alex!

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 9 November 2003 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I know. Even just typing that out, I started to feel really awful about it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 9 November 2003 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I had this sketchbook I'd been carrying around with me for about a month, writing and doing lots of sketches of buildings and statues all over Italy and France and some other countries. On my way home, I had to spend a night in London, and I flew in from Amsterdam early in the evening and was trying to find a place to stay, and I put my sketchbook on top of the payphone and made a few calls, and then I started to walk away and realized I didn't have my sketchbook, and when I went back, it was gone.
I guess there's some monetary value in that it would cost me a lot to go back to all of those places and try to do all those sketches again, but mostly I was just sick at the thought of some stranger looking/laughing at them.

kirsten (kirsten), Sunday, 9 November 2003 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

When I left my last job they gave me a £40 Dartington crystal 'rock goblet' wine glass, which was the most beautiful thing EVER and I smashed it inside a week. Fucking IDIOT.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 9 November 2003 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, c'mon now....could anything be cooler to smash than a "rock goblet"? How absolutely fuckin' Blue Cheer of you, man! ROCK ON!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 November 2003 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe that, once again, I seem to have misplaced my winter ski jacket. This is the second time this has happened, that I've lost a nice comfortable warm black ski jacket. The first time it was kind of an expensive jacket, and it was very drunk, and I probably deserved it, but today I was searching for the latest version (somewhat less expensive but no less important!) and can't find it anywhere. How could I have lost it, without even trying?

Also, for those of you that lost your plane tickets, they have electronic ones now.

hstencil, Monday, 10 November 2003 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I lost a pair of vouchers for a round trip flight that I got from getting bumped. Well, I do know what happened to them. I left them on the coffee table and my roommate cleaned up and threw them out. This was 7 or 8 years ago, but I'm pretty sure that even now you need the vouchers or you're out of luck.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 10 November 2003 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

$800 in cash, everything I had earned in one week. I was in between checking accounts, so I put the cash inside of a book, promptly spent a couple of weeks working and binge-drinking, and when I went to find the cash, I couldn't find it. I don't know if my roommate found it, or someone who was over at my place.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 10 November 2003 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had my cellular phone stolen, it was probably worth $100 or a bit more back then.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 10 November 2003 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I lost a necklace worth £100 at school once. It was my first piece of expensive jewellery which i got from my parents for Christmas. I woke up on a saturday morning & relaised I didn't have it. I was so upset, but my parents were really cool.
At the moment, I think I have lost my passport. I am hoping that it will be in the house somewhere, but my hope is fading fast.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 10 November 2003 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

beautiful little sapphire stud earrings from my ex - I loved them to distraction - but never took them off... except one time at a hotel in Chicago - and left them there.

some velvet morning (luna.c), Monday, 10 November 2003 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

once when i was in high school, i was waiting at the corner of a busy street for my parents to pick me up from my weekly saxophone lesson. as usual, when they pulled up, i quickly hopped in the back of the car. as we got about tree blocks away, i let out the loudest "OH FUCK" of my young life, jumped out of the car and ran back to the corner to retrieve my saxophone, which thankfully was still sitting there.

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 10 November 2003 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

e-mu emax2 sampler keyboard (not worth much now, but it co$t me 2000 quid)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 10 November 2003 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was in a theatre in london for J's b/day, we got a little very drunk & when it was finished we left & started walking to the restaurant, only to realise that I had left my bag in the theatre. We ran back & it was all locked up so we banged on the door for a while & eventually they opened the door & let me in to go & find it. Luckily it was still sitting exactly where I left it!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 10 November 2003 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I left a $5000 Fendi briefcase in the back of a taxi last year. That was a sad day.

antexit (antexit), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a model Yellow Submarine with pop up Beatles heads when I was very young. Dropped it in a stinky ditch. Worth about £300 now. Parents still give me a hard time about it. 28 years after it happened.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

my house was robbed, if that counts. They took a fairly expensive amp and CD player, a brand new TV (which I did get reimbursed for since I bought it on my credit card that had purchase protection) and my jewelry box that had a lot of sentimental stuff but was probably only $100-$200 of jewelry. I did not have renter's insurance (probably would have barely met the deductible anyway) and of course it was a bummer (they totally tore my house apart looking for money besides). BUT it ended up being a really good experience in that I realized what I hadn't lost--my life, my sense of safety, my old records and photos, etc. Nothing you can buy is worth very much.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I left a brand new suit worth £200 on a coach, after an overnight trip from Glasgow - London. I realised what I'd done when i was walking from the coach station to the tube, but was stupidly going straight into work, so didn't have time to go back and see if the coach was still there. I phoned up as soon as I got into work, and got given the depot phone number, but, surprise surprise, it wasn't found.

When I left my last job I got a bottle of glenlivet, a lovely modern art reference book, £30 H& gift vouchers, the good luck card, and some photographs, and I realised, after a heavy night, when I was on the platform on the underground that I didn't have the bag with me. Mark kindly went back to the bar, but it had disappeared.

I'm such a dunce. I'm sure there's lots of other stuff

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 10 November 2003 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly, its either a ring given to my hockey team by our sponsors when we won the Ontario hockey championships back in Midget or Bantam level. Or its my cell phone.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 10 November 2003 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

On my way to Bowlie I left several forms of ID (enough to open several bank accounts and create major havoc in my name) on a Glasgow-London bus. National Express were not helpful. I must have inherited this crapness from Vicky as I was on my way to meet her at the time.

My little brother, though, has lost my Radiohead Drill ep. This must be worth a bit. He also lost his passport two days before he was due to go on holiday a few weeks ago and had to cancel his flights to Europe and holiday in the south of England, which was as near to the sun as he could get without a passport.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

probably just an umbrella or 5.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Over the course of three months I have lost 2 watches. I haven't bought a new watch yet, I keep holding out hope that at least one of the watches will turn up eventually.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

My "change purse"--containing $300 in cash--fell out of my purse in this gay bar downtown one night. To the credit of the person who found it, it also had my ID and credit card in it, which they returned to the bartender.
