TS: School of Rock vs. Back to School

Which boffo comedy starring a large, professionally obnoxious comedian who "turns a [college campus/high school] inside out!!!" is better? I liked Back to School, haven't seen School of Rock, and suspect I'd choose the former even if I did see the latter. Y'all?

Also, give reasons.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a toughie, I like both a fair amount. However, (and I'm going to get beat down for this) I think I'm going to have to go with School of Rock, for three reasons:
1. I didn't see Back to School early enough in my life for it to have the nostalgic value for me that I suspect it has with others.
2. School of Rock has the whole "rock" aspect.
3. SOR focuses almost entirely on the "funny" character, as Jack Black is in almost every scene. BTS, however, occasionally takes the camera away from Dangerfield and focuses on his bland, unfunny son.

School of Rock's corrollary is The Bad News Bears not Back to School

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

kids flicks rule ie. SOR for me

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

back to school would be my entry in the "mankind's greatest achievements" thread some days. jack black has a long way to go before he can fill that necktie.

old school is the back to school of 2003 (will ferrell: dangerfield, vince vaughn: robert downey jr, luke wilson: that guy from christine) and back to school beats it pretty easily even though old school has kim from 24 and may yang.

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

does kim from 24 get killed? that's the only way it would improve on back to school?

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

no - we see her panties

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

they're pink

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

kim wears pink panties

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

does eminem put her in a trunk?

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

there's shoulda been a scene in old school with burt young standing in front of a limo hold a card saying 'eminem'

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

do I have to care what the "real" corrollaries of each are in order to start me a thread? no I do not.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Back to School because Billy Zabka is in it.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Back to School was a great movie in the 1980s and it still is now. Ama you're on the wrong track here, methinks, because this was actually one of the great surreal masterpieces. "Girls, this is Lou. Lou, these are girls."

Back to School is a masterpiece. School of Rock is a marginally entertaining mish-mash of cutesy kid shit, rockist nostalgia, and no jokes. the only things it has going for it are the presence of Mike White and Joan Cusack.

i mean, back to school is no caddyshack and it may funnier for us 80s kids ... but it's a zillion times funnier than a lot of what passes for "comedy" nowadays.

... such as school of rock (which isn't a bad or unfunny film).

KARLOR CAN FUCK ANYTHING! AND HE WILL AND HAS!!! (Eisbaer), Thursday, 14 July 2011 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, see there is a joke in EVERY SCENE in Back to School.

I can't remember a single joke from School of Rock, although I know there must be a few

and school of rock doesn't have a teenage robert downey, jr. as an OMGLOL mid-80s goth-in-a-puffy shirt:

these movies have nothing in common and 'school of rock' is better anyway.

Bert Young perpetually needs a shave.

Wherever he is at this morning, I bet Bert needs a shave.
