...and the US loses. The way this plays out could be interesting.

This is about 3rdh or 4th in a row the US has lost either at the WTO or NAFTA level. Most involved just lonely Canadian lumber. But I love how Bush's early isolationism is slowly being defeated by internation courts and orginizations.

Hurrah for the WTO!
Its not often you get to say that you know.

International Steel Group started up recently here in Cleveland and has actually been making money. I hope it hasn't been entirely due to the tariff.

The EU can join in the MexiCanadian invasion of the USA, to seize any assets they find to pay off the USA's debt to EU steel producers.

Does this mean anything though?
Cuz we all know how much respect the Bush Administration (and those of Clinton, Bush & Reagan) have for International Regulatory Bodies.

What I also heard was that if there is a trade war then the EU is planning on targetting goods from poilitically sensitive states (e.g. Florida oranges).

A pyrrhic victory, The steel market is on the up and american steel users are complaining (5000 jobs saved in steel vs 25000 lost in manufacturing). Bush was probably going to drop it anyway. However now instead of being able to portray it as being good for manufacturing there will be the taint of bowing before the Europeans. Expect a decision to be announced when Bush is in London next week so Tony can portray it as him bringing Europe and the US closer together. The EU will then not seek damages sthrough the WTO process and the US steel industry will have been protected for 18 months without any international censure. The WTO process is far too slow and the Bush junta knew this and exploited it.
