Two jobs

What is it like having two jobs, maybe both part-time? Or one full-time and one part-time? Is this even possible? How do you make sure you can work all the hours required of you and still hold both jobs?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i work part time on the weekends and have a full time job. You need to decide which is the main job and the second has to bend to accomodate that.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

How understanding is your part time job, Sam? Did you get it on the proviso that you would only be working weekends?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a part time job and then freelance.
I want one fulltime job so I can have my life back.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I am Huckleberry!

Except I get fucked around and do about 12 hours overtime per week, so actually get paid part time hours for full-time week.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i freelance and i am currently looking for a fulltime job but i dont plan on stopping the freelance when i get it which means i will be reduced to a gibbering idiot soon enough.

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

adam, very and yes.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too!
They actually have me leave an hour early one day a week just so that they can narrowly avoid having me fall into fulltime classification, at which point I would be entitled to ridiculous things like healthcare, vacation and, uh, dignity!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

really i just want something simple and maybe physical and un-brain taxing so i don't feel totally exhausted at the end of the day when i have to come home and write.

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

though if anyone wants to give me an editors job *makes phone hand motion*

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

though if anyone wants to give me an editors job *makes phone hand motion*

uh, if you did this in my office, I would file a sexual harrasment complaint.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

(and then jerk you off)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

NOOOO, who wrote that?!
That's gross.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to work full-time as a roofer and builder and tend bar in the evenings. However at the time I was young, energetic, single and in desperate need of cash (Yay black market economy yaaay!"). It wasn't too bad as both jobs were very different, in fact I enjoyed the bar job that much that I kept it right through to my next full time job, I only left it when I moved to this current one as the hours clased and I didn't really need the money any more. It's doable.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@m, I waited tables and bartended after my 9-5 for a summer about 5 years ago. With the night job I just let them know that I wasn't available until 7pm. With my day job if I ever had any deadlines, I would go in early the day of to make sure that I'd have my time to wrap everything up and still make the moonlighting job.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(gygax!, you must have been exhausted.)

I'd like to get a weekend job and a (semi?) full-time, if I can. I stay up pretty late most nights anyway, so I don't think I'd miss weekend daytimes for a while. I'd rather be not working most nights.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm working nearly full time at one job, and another job part-time right now. It's up to 60 hours a week depending what is going on any given week.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I work as a secretary by day and a naughty prostitute by night. Oh, no wait - that was that's 80s movie ANGEL.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

wasn't there a series of Angel movies?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

You would know!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

a "naughty" prostitute?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 November 2003 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'know, playing pranks on her tricks, like putting in fake vampire teeth before blowjobs

Matt (Matt), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh-huh, what Matt said.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

it is usually not an ideal situation. I had a breakdown when I was working three part-time jobs while a full-time double-majored student, even thought all the jobs added up to less than 40 hrs/wk. It was just too many commitments to juggle. (and then there was the additional stress of my dad losing his job and becoming very ill, but it all turned out okay.)

The real key is to pick your priorities and not over-commit; if possible make sure both employers know the situation and where they stand in your life. If you have the freedom to say no, be sure you're ready too--most of my misery came from my stubborn inability to say 'this job is no longer important or necessary and I must leave it' even though they were silly dime-a-dozen jobs, I was somehow worried about losing face or something.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't it weird how we (as in We, The People) get so worried about "letting down" employers who don't actually care about us?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking that too.

Allyzay, Monday, 10 November 2003 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

no shit, lesson learned!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I totally have this problem. I have been SO anxious about telling my boss I'm leaving even though he's a bastard. I know I'll be happy to leave, but part of me keeps thinking that giving only 2 weeks notice is evil. Like I'd be Judas or something. F him.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to punch my boss in the junk.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, Sarah, I'm planning on walking out today if they give me any shit about taking Thurs and Fri off on short notice--trust me, your 2wks is not Judaslicious behavior. 2wks is totally normal!

Allyzay, Monday, 10 November 2003 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope so. I mean, I haven't given notice yet, obviously. On that bitch test, they said anything less than 3 weeks notice is Bitch behavior. Of course, I suppose that's not a highly qualified source.

I would like to give NO notice - just disappear one day. Maybe Nick could call and say I died. Yeah, that would be a lot easier...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

3 weeks! It's craziness. 2 weeks was good enough in our parents' day, it is good enough now. It's like the work week, everyone used to work 40 hours and that was normal but now it's totally expected/required to work overtime, it's not like a nice, responsible thing you do. That's some kind of bullshit!

I think I'm going to call my work myself and tell them I died, they're too stupid to know the problem with that situation.

Allyzay, Monday, 10 November 2003 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I ended up working TWO MONTHS after I gave my notice at my last "serious" job- don't even fucking ask.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

two jobs are two too many!!!

honestly having one full time job is tiring enough for me, but I am lazy. I keep thinking maybe I'll look for some weekend work to help with my outrageous spending habits but it doesn't seem worth the cost to my mental well-being. two part time jobs would be nice though.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh Sarah I feel for you! Perhaps you should just write a letter and hand it to dorkboss. Just say "hello, I'm here to inform you that this is my two weeks' notice and I shall be leaving on (date). Please let me know if there is any paperwork that I need to fill out. Here is my formal letter of resignation." Then leave the room. Oh and if you have a HR department, go ask them about the paperwork because your boss sure won't tell you about it. If they say they need you to say, tell them you are leaving in two weeks and it is up to them if they want to pay you after you leave.

Sounds great in theory. I still haven't left a job since the ones I mentioned. I have given my boss a YEARS' notice though! This is an awful idea unless your boss is as cool as mine, of course.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Would any of these lucky people with two jobs care to give me one of them?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My one job is more than enough work and stress but unfortunately I need the extra cash. Would not advise moonlighting unless absolutely neccessary.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Wise words. I wish I was in a position where this was not absolutely necessary, at least for a short while.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Quitting smoking (three weeks today) has diminished my reliance on extra-income. Is there any kind of carcinogenic you'd rather remove from your daily routine than get a second job to support?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I worked two full time jobs for nine months before I went back to college. I worked at a file room 8 to 4:30 in the accounting department of the university, then usually 5:30 to close at a restaurant. I had it set up where I never worked Sundays, so I would at least have one day off a week.

It killed my legs at times, especially a the stretch in the fall where I averaged around 80 hours week for about three months straight.

It wasn't fun, but the cash made the last year of school much easier as I didn't have to work full time when I went back.

earlnash, Monday, 10 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there any kind of carcinogenic you'd rather remove from your daily routine than get a second job to support?

Sadly, no. I used to smoke a pack a day, now I only wish I could cut down on something that expensive/unnecessary.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

okay...if I do leave this job, I'm going to miss moments like I just had, where George Carlin basically gave me a half-hour comedy tutorial for free over the phone.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there any kind of carcinogenic you'd rather remove from your daily routine than get a second job to support?

three little words: home brewed coffee.

I start the wonderful world of two jobs next month, one of them unpaid volunteer work (but with excellent perks) and the other for not much more than minimum wage. If i can't get overtime hours after christmas ima have to get a third or earn less than i got on the dole!

This is the thread where you tell me working is for chumps.

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

My whole senior year of college I worked 2 jobs while taking 18 credits to graduate early. I also worked at the University weekly mag and was the music director at the community radio station. I would bus drive the early morning (5:15 -9:00 or 6:30-11:00) shift and then go to class where I would find a discreet place to fall asleep. Sometimes I would get back on the bus after 2-3 classes and drive for 2-3 more hours. Then I would go to the radio station to catalogue and return phone calls and do my show. THen maybe another class or I would go to my second job at Plan 9 records. Once a week I would write a record review for my mag. I drove about 20-30 hours a week and worked at the record store about 20 hours. I was the BIGGEST BITCH that year because I never slept. I didn't even have to do it for money, I just couldn't stop.

And then after I graduated I added temping to the mix. I would temp full time during the day and drive the bus and work at the record store in evenings and weekends. I would sometimes realize that I had a bus shift while I was temping. Thankfully my supervisorloved me so he would always cover it.

I try not to do any work now.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 10 November 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

that is crazy admirable work ethic. I can barely drag myself through eight hours of stultifying boredom. I'm not sure what's wrong with me. I'd really like to think that I'd be able to work two jobs if I had to but I have a horrible feeling I'd probably wind up homeless because I am too lazy.

Please disregard this if any of you are ever in a position to hire me for a job. Thank you.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 10 November 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
i'm really nervous because i start my part-time secondment today. the schedule just sounds silly. today i spend half the day here, half the day there. tuesday and wednesday here, thursday there, friday here but doing work on the seconded project.

it's like starting a new job but i think i might be expected to know more than if it was really a new job, since it's something i supposedly know something about. eek! hopefully today's 'induction' will be a tour and showing me a desk and giving me a computer and i won't be expected to actually make any independent thoughts...

just wanted to share the nervousness about starting a new second job.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 2 February 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Best of luck.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

good luck with this Colette, it sounds a bit manic to say the least! *hugs*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

When I had just finished A-levels i had a 3 month spell of doing an office job (shift 0600-1330 or 1200-1730 mon-fri) and working at the counter of a chinese takeaway (1700(or1800)-2330 everyday of the week apart from tuesdays)

it was quite mental, you spend pretty much the whole day working and go home and sleep. the chinese takeaway job is the one that was more flexible since it was owned by a friend of my parents'.

the money from the two jobs added together were quite good, but don't want to do that again any time soon.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I have done this twice (having two jobs) & it really isn't to be recommended for your health's sake, but if you (the royal you) need the cash, then I guess it's a necessary evil!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Good luck Colette - I'm sure once you've got used to it the variety in your working day will be very welcome. Still nerve-wracking at first.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

especially since the people i'm working with are notoriously evil! oh well, i'm sure they're really nice deep down inside.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 2 February 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
I've been working a full-time and a part-time job for the better part of two months now while I wait to see if the latter will take me on full-time (from being a temp)and I can quit my current job. But still no news. This shit's killing me. I'm all grouchy and I need some sleep. Oh, and I have a class tonight. fuck.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

you need to call your agency and see if they have any other long term temp positions available and fuck both those places.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I have. Maybe I wasn't clear.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a full-time office job and I work part-time 10-15 hours a week, at a store, for extra money. It makes me value my free time a lot more than I did before this arrangement began (around 9 months ago).

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

you have to call them and say "GET ME THE FUCK OUT OF HERE NOW, FUCKOS"

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, quit hogging all the jobs.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I need a third job. seriously. i can't pay my bills or feed myself. :(

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Just steal food.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Nobody needs three jobs. Try Ebay!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"2 bananas - reserve bid - fiddy cent"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah you can probably get a good deal on doritos that look like elvis and the virgin mary

oops (Oops), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i have nothing to ebay. i've also decided to just eat cereal from now on. cheap and filling.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I see someone's not on the Atkins diet, then.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck that shit

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

You can fit a lot of steaks in your pants.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Sam, my host from last week (C@rlin & D@vid's friend) will be in Ships this weekend celebrating his entrance to architecture school, I told him to say hello to you.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

at one of your jobs (to keep on topic).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

it really sucks when you get laid off over the phone from job#1 while you are at job#2

kephm, Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

1997 was a horrible year

kephm, Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

oh. that sure sucks, kephm.

i happen to have two jobs and a half, and sometimes one more "quarter" on top of all that.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

cool gygax.

can I have your other half t\\t?

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Sam, you want me wife??

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 26 February 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

can she clean?

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"never did no cleaning for no lousy communist, ain't gonna do any cleaning for any lazy capitalist either"

y'see, Sam, ain't no way but to clean up your act yourself then

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 26 February 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Help me I can't stop working!

I need to get a salaried job fast. There's nothing more sucky than knowing that it will cost you a hundred dollars if you just stay in bed all day.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Try $180. :(

Ask For Janice (thatgirl), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

uhh, Sam if I made $180 a day I COULD afford to take a day off every now and again. But to each his or her own debt. Good luck with that.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)
