It was really good! rip-roaring even! amazing sound design! I liked it!

too bad about the title ("master and commander: the far side of the world"), this is really the year of shitty movie titles isn't it?

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been meaning to read the book(s) for some time now, in part because my Dad is a fan. How does the movie compare?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 10 November 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't read them.

but the movie pays really really great attention to visual & aural detail in a way I'd imagine would please fans of the books. it's pretty great-looking too.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

From the trailers it just seemed like it was about Russell Crowe furiously waddling his way from one end of the boat to the other.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the advance reviews on this are extremely positive

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I really don't know anything about this movie. I saw RC on the cover of Time , though. That was funny.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

as they should be, spencer. there's a lot to like about this movie.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

what a trite thing for me to say. but let me say that one thing I really liked about this movie was the fact that it took place in such a limited space--I'd say 80% of it is set on this one vessel, and you never see the ship they're pursuing/fighting with from it's point of view.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmm...so Das Boot but on the surface. (In a way. I also think Jurgen Prochnow could take Crowe eight ways to Sunday, obv.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

russell crowe is a fanny.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The title sounds like its based on a videogame.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Or a BDSM video.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 10 November 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Imagining "Master and Servant" by Depeche as the theme song to this movie makes me happy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

jurgen prochnow might (and I say MIGHT) be able to take russell crowe but director-wise, peter weir kicks wolfgang petersen's ass any day of the week.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm...there's a better TS, Das Boot vs. Gallipoli.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Russell Crowe would make a great Duncan Idaho.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

thing is petersen has "das boot" and then... "air force one!" "in the line of fire!" "enemy mine!"*

now I've never seen his german movies so what do I know, but weir has a much better good-to-stinker ratio from where I'm sitting.

* actually a sentimental favourite

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Russell Crowe would make a great Duncan Idaho.

Hm...he would, actually. Though he would have been better in the followup films that never were.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(air force one is my sentimental petersen fav but i have semi-high hopes that Troy will replace it)

who is still green-lighting these double titled movies?? the good-to-stinker rundown of THEM can't be very pretty

jones (actual), Monday, 10 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

blame pirates of the caribbean: the curse of the black pearl, which convinced execs that nautical adventures should be twice-monickered

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I blame Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

that title's interesting in that not a single word of it belongs anywhere near the title of a movie

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe the time is finally right for remo williams to continue his adventure

jones (actual), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

they missed an opportunity a few years back when the washington monument was all scaffolded up

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

fred ward where are you?!

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, I felt pretty betrayed by the dude for a few years post-remo

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Though he would have been better in the followup films that never were.

exactly. and y'know, New Line is trying to work out a new franchise....

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh. A third take on Dune, though? ;-) Personally I think they should get a hold of co-LOTR writer Phillipa Bowen and take her up on an idea to do the Earthsea books...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

please let this beat the matrix this weekend please please

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The Patrick O'Brian books (the ones I've read at least) are really good. I'm very excited about this movie--the trailer has been the highlight of lots of crappy movies I've seen recently.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

eighteen years pass...

too bad about the title ("master and commander: the far side of the world"), this is really the year of shitty movie titles isn't it?

i will check it out

mark s, Monday, 1 May 2023 19:48 (two years ago)

one year passes...

i'm on the second of the books, they are a lot goofier than i realized. this one has jack aubrey disguised as a bear to escape france with maturin as his keeper. they are very good books though i tend to glaze over during the more technical parts.
