It was really good! rip-roaring even! amazing sound design! I liked it!

too bad about the title ("master and commander: the far side of the world"), this is really the year of shitty movie titles isn't it?

I've been meaning to read the book(s) for some time now, in part because my Dad is a fan. How does the movie compare?

I haven't read them.

but the movie pays really really great attention to visual & aural detail in a way I'd imagine would please fans of the books. it's pretty great-looking too.

what a trite thing for me to say. but let me say that one thing I really liked about this movie was the fact that it took place in such a limited space--I'd say 80% of it is set on this one vessel, and you never see the ship they're pursuing/fighting with from it's point of view.

thing is petersen has "das boot" and then... "air force one!" "in the line of fire!" "enemy mine!"*

now I've never seen his german movies so what do I know, but weir has a much better good-to-stinker ratio from where I'm sitting.

The Patrick O'Brian books (the ones I've read at least) are really good. I'm very excited about this movie--the trailer has been the highlight of lots of crappy movies I've seen recently.

one year passes...

i'm on the second of the books, they are a lot goofier than i realized. this one has jack aubrey disguised as a bear to escape france with maturin as his keeper. they are very good books though i tend to glaze over during the more technical parts.
