How long will it survive?

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Cause I'm bored, really, and I need to do something to keep myself off the NHS Direct website cause I keep self diagnosing myself with crazy diseases like "Irritable Bowel Syndrome" and stuff.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wait, it's the Bowel which is irritated in that, it does not explain *me* being constantly irritable. Never mind...

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

See, I knew it. This thread would die an early and unloved death. Sigh.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Well err... what is the thread about if none of those things? ;D

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

And btw you dont want irritable bowel, trust me.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea what this thread is about. I just wanted to see if we could sustain a conversation that didn't involve those three subjects.

(I am actually quite curious about IBS because this is not the first time I've been paranoid about having it.)

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

let's talk about takign sides: canada vs australia or some shit like that - it will go on for a while i bet then

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope, that's nationalism, which comes under politics.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose I could start talking about the Mars Beagle project being on the news last night (HSA actually woke me up to go and watch it) cause that's, like, about astronomy and stuff - but then I'd have to get all nationalistic about the US/USSR and their domination of the space program being broken, and that would be politics, and erm, I would start talking about how lovely Alexander the James looked as he was trapaising across Jodrell Bank and that would get us on to sex. Sigh.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i have Irritable Bowls Syndrome. i really want to go bowling. and i live quite near Rowan's now so how about it?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Boweling is sport so GET OUT OF HERE!!!

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, I mean BOWLING. (disem)Boweling hasn't been a sport since the Middle Ages.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

If yr not in ridiculous miserable pain yr prob safe from IBS right now

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

you should have entitled it This Is Not a Thread.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not in totally miserable pain, but I've been suffering cramp like annoyances for about three days now. I needed a hot water bottle to get back to sleep last night. Which in turn makes *me* irritable.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine always used to suffer from cramps & stomach trouble, but it turns out she had a wheat intolerance. She has stopped eating it & she feels loads better.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

we could talk about recommendations for dealing with back pain and annoying cramps - there!

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

my mom has chronic stomach trouble, and i think it has something to do w/ her gallbladder

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

WE COULD TALK ABOUT KILLING JOKE or about tudors =)

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a very good idea, actually...

The wheat intolerance thing has been suggested before. Because it does seem to get worse when I consume a lot of wheat-based food. Plus, wheat intolerance can manifest as anaemia, which I suffer from loads. (When I ate only rice for nearly a year, I was fine.) And I instinctually just don't *like* wheat based things like bread and pasta. But... I don't WANT to have wheat intolerance! It's so... trendy. And, well, it also precludes things I *do* like, such as pizza.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post I actually think that whinging about our medical complaints and offering suggestions about them is a very good idea! Not Killing Joke.)

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

But didn't you have a baguette the other day? And also what did you drink at the w/e? Not everything is ok to drink if you have a wheat or gluten intolerance you know!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

We could talk about NHS Direct and my time in the NHS, but in a way that = politics, well it does with me anyway. It suxxxored whatever, but not as hard as what I'm doing now... I think.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It Poteen and elderberry wine for you, kate.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah , i don't understand the wheat intolerance thing. it's like, for some people, that's themost harmful stuffthey can put into their stomachs...their bodies just reject it fantastically. other people, like me, can eat pasta every single day for months on end, and have nothing happen to our systems..

also, i think the effects of vegetarianism on stomach conditions should be discussed more. vegetarians naturally have more gas than non-veggies....urban myth (hahha, rural myth?)..or TRUE ?

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I've had a ton of wheaty stuff lately. The Baguette yesterday and pizza - several times in the past few days - and also quite a bit of cous cous and I was drinking Winter Warmer Ale, so the wheat thing is highly probable. I just don't *want* it to be the wheat.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/healthyeating/jc_wheat.shtml

I think it might be Kate!
Vic that is definitely an urban myth imo.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

More gas for vegetarians is pretty true, but it depends on the vegetables. I love broccoli and spinach and kale, but they've been all but banned from my diet by the bloke who shares a bed with me. ;-)

Wheat intolerance is like any other allergy. I mean, why can my mum eat fish all the doo dah day, but if it goes anywhere near me, I throw up and get ill? Why do I love love love hazelnuts and almonds and the like, but my old housemate would go into fits if she even smelled a nut?

A few years ago, Suzy made me this super yummy dish out of mock duck (which is almost pure gluten - the thing that wheat intolerants are allergic to) and I nearly exploded. :-(

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, x-post, I've been suffering from a lot of misinformation and the conflation of wheat and gluten, clearly. Need to investigate this more thoroughly.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, you can be allergic to one and not the other.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to go to the doctor and get that test thingy just to put my mind at rest.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

You can go to specific food allergy places as I don't think the doctor will do anything for you. I think it costs about £40 though, as they will want to test for all manner of things.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

According to that article, the doctor can give a test for Coeliac Disease. That's all I really want to know. Cause I don't want to blow £40 on going to some holistic charlatan who will tell me that I can't eat broccoli during certain phases of the moon or nonsense like that.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, well that would depend where you go. Prob best to go to the doc then.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Go to a doc? So he can squinch up his eyes and say, "Okay, fine, what kind of drugs do you want?"

Catty (Catty), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, they ask you that cause it's obvious that you're American, and all Americans ever want is drugs!

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Peppermint. Apparently this is good for IBS, mind you whnever I had it I just burped mint, but hey.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Peppermint actually really works, I chew peppermint gum whenever I feel sick.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Those mint capsule things they give ya for IBS cause other kinds of wierd side effects, 'ring of fire' doesn't even being to explain the weirdness....

IBS is bad Kate, trust me, you'd know if you had it :0(

smee (smee), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but... lots of things they say "you'd know if you had it" and I know that *something* is wrong, but I don't know what, so what am I supposed to think? Like, it would be so painful I wouldn't be able to WALK know if I had it? Sorry, but that sounds really patronising. I've had broken bones and not actually been sure about it before today.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Mint is actually bad for the digestive system. My doc told me not to eat it if I have heartburn, which I get a lot.

Ginger is ace, though.

Catty (Catty), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

peppermint tea is s'posed to be good for indigestion (esp if you are pregnant). Not speaking from personal experience though.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, you get terrible, unbearable, doubled over in pain cramps/spasms (starting small and building up to the unbearable bit) then you have explosive diarrhoea and the pain goes away

The End ;0)

Well, there's loadsa different symptoms and some people get constipated for days and days and all sorts of other 'orrible digestive stuff but that's basically it.

smee (smee), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Both peppermint and ginger are good for the pregnancy sickness. (I do speak from experience.)

Sorry x-post...

Smee, I haven't had symptoms that bad in a long time, but I did used to get that sort of thing - with long build up of constipation as well! Yuck! But this is more about my digestive system than I really feel like sharing in a public forum. And it hasn't really been that bad since I stopped living on nothing but Ramen noodles. (Pasta! Again, pointing evilly to the wheat thing.)

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You should just stop eating and live on booooze!

smee (smee), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I did that for a while, it was great, except then my liver took exception and I got a nasty ulcer type thing and had to eat chalk for a month. Yuck.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

As long as it doesnt contain wheat or gluten! ;-)

x-post

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

In that case I'm out of advice....

smee (smee), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

He knows so much about these things.

smee (smee), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My tummy hurt really bad this weekend after eating lots of Greek food. Nick made me some peppermint tea with honey and I felt SO much better.

Jeff Goldblum really isn't that unattractive. Plus, he's a funny guy. Give it time. You will all come round.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think he is necessarily unattractive, just not for me, esp in the fly.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

why oh why darling
why did you change

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't grovel and scream

smee (smee), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

This is my punnishment for talking about Nigel Spivey on other threads, isn't it? Sigh.

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yes

smee (smee), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

It's my thread and I feel unwelcome. ::cries::

(And don't start singing It's My Party And I'll Cry If I Want To at me or I'll hit you. Repeatedly. With sharp sticks!)

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I just don't understand what happened to this thread!!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan came in and ruined it. What else is new? THat's what he does, with his American filthy "make vast sweeping overstatements about the Smiths" ways. ::shakes fists::

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but I stopped doing The Smiths and moved on to Siouxsie!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It doesn't matter. I'm still going home in a sulk. In fact, I don't even get to go home, I have to go to my ex-bassist's birthday party (despite the fact that she didn't come to mine) and Catty isn't coming and now HSA claims that he's sick and he doesn't want to go so I will end up GOING ALL BY MYSELF and feeling like the big fat loser especially considering the last party I went to at the bar, I was thrown out, and it's all so tragic, waaaaaaahhh!!!

On the plus side, however, they have ice cream cocktails. Hurrah!

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart Kate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, now I'm not in a sulk cause Ned just turned his post into a heart.

:-)

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah! But I heart Dan too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Slayer.

I always wanted to fuck Pat Nevin because he seemed more left wing than other footballers.

Whoops, sorry, I slipped.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You slipped and fell onto Pat Nevin?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It's an excuse I plan to use if I ever get the chance!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, thanks, Pink.

I'm in a bit of a crappy mood today. Had a gingerbread latte and felt somewhat better, but still feel cranky and snappy.

Damn, hope Catty got my text message this morning before she got on her flight! Bon Voyage! Kiss a Duran for me!

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

MAYBE I JUST NEED TO HAVE A BIG CRANKY GROWL.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Well lets hang out on this thread musing about Nigels and the live giving qualities of yummy beverages.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a headache that won't go away with water drinking, I haven't had enough sleep lately, and I've spent too much time doing enforced socialising, and not enough time resting and recuperating. And to top it off, HSA is now sick and requires nursing and attention. (Why can't boys just take care of themselves when they are ill?)

But on the plus side, Heroes of WWII is on again tonight. I hope. I haven't exactly checked cause I haven't had a night in in so long, waaaahhh!!!

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I know what you mean. I thought I'd just got rid of a headache (this one lasted 2 weeks) but no it has come back again. boo. more sleep is needed & hopefully we will get our heating back after being without it all w/e.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

A two-week headache? Oh my god, Pink, that's awful! I think I would have administered a trepanning operation with a rusty bottlecap by about the two day mark.

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I am pretty used to them now, been suffering from severe headaches & migraines since i was 16. I always get bored of hearing myself saying 'i've got a headache'. I don't tend to take pills anymore cos they don't ever really help. (woe is me obv!!)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

That's really harsh? I don't mean to reapply the mother hen treatment you were giving me yesterday, but have you seen a doctor about it?

My mother suffered from recurring migraines and terrible headaches for ages. These began to get so bad that she would literally have to lie down in a darkened room for a day or two. She saw all kinds of doctors about it, though, and even prescribed various migraine medications.. And after years and years of needless suffering, she discovered that she was actually allergic to caffeine. She cut out tea, coffee and chocolate, and she never had another migraine.

I'm not suggesting that you are allergic to caffeine (god forbid! that would be a life not worth living) but that there might be some simple root cause at the bottom of it.

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah there is, sadly it is stress (apparently) and it follows, if i am worrying about something i get a headache. I don't drink caffeine as a rule actually. I drink decaf tea & fruit teas & rarely drink coffee (unless it is yummy coffee but this isnt very often). I don't eat that much chocolate either less than 1 bar a week usually. I haven't been to the docs specifically about the actual headaches for a while now, as I don't really want to be on tablets for the rest of my life. I have to rotate what I take as paracetamol stopped working years ago. Ibuprofen used to work, but doesnt now. I sometimes take paramol which is paracetamol & codeine which sometimes works. Usually i dont bother with tablets though. (i drink alot of water aswell, so it isn't that!) I had a CT scan aswell, but it was all clear.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Many painkillers stop having effect as the brain becomes used to them, so it's a good idea not to become dependant on them.

Doctors seem pretty quick to write things off to "stress" if they can't explain them, but since you've had a CT scan, it seems like at least they *tried* to find an explanation.

Some other things to consider - perhaps it is eye strain? Do you wear glasses? If you don't, have you tried wearing glasses? If you do, perhaps you should have your prescription rechecked? Does working on a computer exacerbate the problem? Are you suffering from glare, on computer screens or in the car?

Sorry if this is not helpful advice, but I always try to find a logical explanation for things, rather than just treating/living with the symptoms.

If you have headaches all the time, it might be helpful noting the circumstances under which you *don't* get headaches, and try focusing on whatever it is that ameliorates the problem, and extrapolate a potential cause from there.

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I do wear glasses for driving at night. Also I sometimes wear them if my eyes are tired, but I dont need them all of the time. I have a screen on my pc at work to reduce the glare.
I don't really tend to take painkillers anyway, unless I've reached the end of my tether with the headache as such. Or if it's a migraine which I get occassionally.
The problem with trying to identify when i 'don't' get a headache is that the actual thing about having headaches every day is that it kind of becomes a habit. I sometimes literally look for the headache in the morning, which will make the symptoms appear. The headache can be in my head (if you excuse the pun.) I have been trying to work out why it happens & tried to sort it, but sometimes things are too stressful and this is what happens.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That does make sense; sometimes worrying about getting sick can make you get sick. Especially with something so stress/tension related as a headache. So find something else to obsess about! Something really trivial, like split ends or going grey or something, to take your mind off thinking about the headache!

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The only problem is that I stress about trivial things. Also, I am about to exchange contracts on a house & i am worried about everything to do with that aswell as other things in my life at the moment. It always happens.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, you will appreciate I have spread the gospel of Spivey along to friends and family who now get the History Channel. They will watch for him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if he will turn up on the History Channel! Cause Jane asked me if he was on UK History, and I said he wasn't, he was on Channel 5. So I suggested that she suggest to her program director the UK History sign him up and pay him loads of money!

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not suggesting that you are allergic to caffeine (god forbid! that would be a life not worth living)

You get used to it....*sniffs*

PinkP I hope your headache goes away soon.
