Charisma

So I was eating lunch at this restaurant, and they had the TV on, showing Pres. Bush giving a speech, and I was thinking, "I can't believe people think that he has charisma. He's got the personality of a wet cardboard box," but obviously other people think that he is "charismatic." Meanwhile, Clinton got called "charismatic" too, but I'm sure there isn't a lot of overlap between people who think Bush is charismatic and Clinton was charismatic.
So then this got me to thinking, what qualities are involved in charisma? Physical appearance? Personality? How much you actually like the person?
What do you think? What is charisma?

the ineffable

No, you're the un-f'able.

Sorry.

i think that charisma is often the poor man's talent. i know quite a few people who get by without actually doing anything substantial and just pull blankets over people's heads. it all catches up to you in the end though, unless you actually have skills, ala bush (like it or not). it may catch up to him though too. *BAM*

Charisma is officially defined as something i don't have and guys with hot girlfriends do have. also one man's person of charisma, is another man's asshat.

The ability to get away with being oneself?

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The ability to keep people distracted from your shortcomings?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

That's only half redundant.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

charisma = making eye contact and appearing interested

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Bush really have charisma or just screen placement? I don't think he's a very good example.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't either, but I've just heard other people talk about his "charisma."

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, his title gives him instant celebrity, which many mistake for charisma. I think maybe that he always seems very into what he is saying (maybe he actually believes it) but also that he has a very likeable face. And I don't mean that it makes you like him, but that it has a lot of character regardless of how much he has.

But how do they do this? What allows them to get away with things that other people don't? I'm looking for specifics here, people.

who knows. it's just something that is physically present. maybe a blank stare that people read as saying "i'm paying attention to you" maybe it is just a smile or facial expression that people find comforting and intriguing. most likely it is an accumulation of many things, but sometimes it's just the way a person appears.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Charisma is a soap bubble of pleasant brainwashing that extends millions of parsecs in every direction in all five dimensions.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm charismatic, I think.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Satan.

Nicolars (Nicole), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Charisma is where charm and persuasiveness meet, but it's not really either, it's like an invisible manifestation of will-bending on the part of the charismatic, almost like a telepathic tractor beam.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Satan.

Those aren't his colors EITHER.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Charisma isn't in my ancient dictionary!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

A supreme confidence in oneself, which is directed outward rather than inward, ie their confidence makes you feel BETTER about yourself rather than worse.
