Crinolines, Petticoats, and Bloomers

I want a short frilly white one so bad. I saw one at Religious Sex but it seemed so short that it would not peek out discreetly from beneath my skirt. What are your experiences, thoughts, etc. regarding the above. Bonus question: Which of the above is being worn in Battle Royale?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

is it crinolines in Battle Royale?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

crinoline junction just doesnt have the same ring to it

erico b. rakimington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

which do you want? I don't think crinolines should peek out unless you're Cyndi Lauper.

I have a very stiff black net one and a not quite as full red one. I dig 'em under vintage dresses and circle skirts.

The net ones can snag yr stockings though.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

For Jess

Jel, I'm not sure, but I'd like to find out.

Sam, I'm not sure what the thing I want is called, but it should stick out about 1/2 inch underneath a short kilt, like in BR.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Since that is a cartoon I can't tell either. From my understanding:
A crinoline is the stiffest and fullest of the three. A petticoat, strictly speaking, will usually be made of a soft cloth like cotton or silk and will have less layers than a crinoline. Bloomers are either knee-length pantaloon things Holly Hobbie (yuck) or shorty panties with ruffles and frills.

It's kind of hard to tell from the pics, but any verdict, Sam?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Those are definitely, without a doubt, petticoats in BR, Mary.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

So *that's* what those super-fluffy petticoat-type things I was seeing are! Crinolines! Cool -- now I know what to ask for should I decide to go as Cyndi Lauper for next Halloween (could happen -- Cyndi's a really cool person IMHO). This thread is informative!

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is Religious Sex?? We can probably go vintage store shuffling, Mary, and find some but I don't know what you'd find for them in this city otherwise--you can find a crinoline in freaking Mandee's lately but no petticoats. We could go shopping this weekend? I'm off Thurs/Fri.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

it's on st. marks, isnt it? my ex had a real 'thing' for it.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

never date a high-maintenence goth clothing designer

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit. NOW you tell me?

Allyzay, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Aren't crinolines generally big hoop underskirts rather than fluffy petticoats? Sort of like a bustle, only all the way round rather than just at the back.

cis (cis), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Religious Sex is on St. Marks. Also try Love Saves the Day around the corner. I know they have great crinolines. Thrift/vintage stores are the way to go.

Crinolines are for full skirts. Those girls in the photo obviously aren't wearing full skirts. They just might even be slips. A cotton slip would work fine.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Religious Sex is on st marks and third, but it's k-dud. I got a cool petticoat-type-thing at that vintage place on 9th recently, mary, and they had several.

Yep, RS is on on St. Marks, across from Trash & Vaudeville, which carries similar stock. I am free for shopping toward the end of this week.

I think I want one like this

http://www.precious-angels.com/precious/p_images/crinoline-kiwi.jpg

Though the one I saw looked more like this

http://www.precious-angels.com/precious/p_images/crinoline-2.jpg

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

that vintage place on 9th

could you be more specific (nothing is coming to mind)?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The site www.pettipond.com appears to have good info but I can't access it as it is blocked here. You could also check out square dancing shops.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary I don't like that second one :/

Allyzay, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I like them both fine but yr skirt will not look like that movie picture you posted. Those are going to make yr skirt poof out.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You could be like Rosie Red and just wear a body suit under the crinoline. Mary loves that look.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

that vintage place on 9th
could you be more specific (nothing is coming to mind)?

It's on the south side of the street and is pretty teensy, but occaisionally has good stuff. It's right next dor to a shoe repair place. I'm not sure what cross streets, but maybe first or second?

mouse, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It's more like a tutu, right? We can inspect anyway, they also have it in black and red, and lots of good cosplay stuff at RS, despite what all the haters say.

This look, classic or dud?

Ha, Carey OTM.

In the window at RS, they have the white crinoline-thingy under the short red and black pleated plaid skirt that I already have, and while it doesn't look quite like BR, it still looks kinda cute/hot, I think. I'm not sure if I would feel too puffy though.

(When I was in 6th grade I wore my sisters do-si-do skirt to the PE hoe-down and everyone laughed at me but my gym teacher took pity on me and made me his special partner for the duration of the party.)

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the look you are veering towards is Gothic Lolita, no? Not my personal favorite as I'm not a fan of young Japanese streetwear but I'm for fluffy, frilly underthings as a general principle.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just in religious sex trying to find a Halloween costume. They had some good things there. Petticoats scare me. They seem like they should always be dirty, you know from falling in the mud or rolling around in hay.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that look is great. I want to go to this RS anyway. I like all the stores everyone on ILX hates anyway.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of the stuff in RS is all right. Overall though I think they're a bit overpriced and things like spiderweb capes scare me. And not in a good way.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(I just walked by a vintage clothing place around 1st ave and 9th st, but it was actually pretty big.)

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary and Carey plot crinoline treatments for a later FAP:

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

religous sex is fine if you have the money to blow. quite overpriced really. the staff at T&V are much more friendly and the selection is twice as large. the above look is classic. um got goth?

*sigh*

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Gothic Lolita does seem to be what RS is pimping. Though Rosie Red has a lovely take on the matter.

(I actually like RS better than T&V bc it is smaller, though I'm not a big fan of either. I prefer 99x.)

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

you and yr scary, big-eye dolls. . .

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

um RS pimps fetish wear. simple. its sorta odd that their isnt a single NYC goth on ILX

More big eyes from Makoto Takahashi.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Reminiscence on 23rd St btw 5th and 6th has various underskirty things.

I need a crinoline for my new dress.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

my gf wears this one crinoline skirt? as outerwear. perhaps she needs reprogramming. a 'loud' fashion statement

kephm, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

No love for bloomers?

http://www.widemedia.com/fashionuk/news/2002/04/11/bloomers.jpg

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary I LOVE bloomers and want some SO MUCH. However whenever I point any out I am always larffed out of townl. I think they would go grate under a big skirt.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

If any of you have access to a sewing machine, it wouldn't be hard to make any of these to your order. I know Butterick and Vogue have "retro" patterns for these.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

You lot confuse me - I always thought a crinoline was one of these:
http://www.suziclarke.co.uk/images/thumbs/cage_crinoline_1860.jpg
I remember Vivienne Westwood doing a 'mini-crini' similar to what you're calling a crinoline, although I can't find a picture. My thighs are too big for anything except the long, hooped type. Sigh.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I know a girl who makes bloomers and wears them by themselves all the time. It works for her. She sells some, too.

My archnemesis ripped off the idea from that girl too and is trying to market a "Moth", "half mod, half goth" line of clothing including a pair of "Moth" bloomers. (flushing noises)

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The net ones can snag yr stockings though.

-- A Girl Named Sam

Hell yes, plays havoc with fishnets.

Mary, I realise this is probably of no use to you at all, but many of the vintage stalls in Camden Stables Market seeem to have mini-crinolines. I think posting one could turn into four shades of nightmare, but I can take you there the next time you come to London.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i so knew this was a mary thread!!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The bloomers remind me of Strawberry Shortcake which is not, imo, a good look for a real live human who isn't actually Strawberry Shortcake :/
