I hate all generations

Or actually I hate the IDEA of generations. Hated 'em since back when it seemed like the term "Generation X" was still something capable of being vetoed. The notion that I should be lumped together with people born around the same time period sounds more like astrology than sociology to me. Do I really have more in common with, I dunno, Alyssa Milano than with my dad? Does a shared experience of Saturday morning cartoons really trump the old race-class-gender troika? Am I becoming an insufferable crank?

no, you sound very sensible to me. I would be more inclined to trust someone who challenges the idea of "a generation" than someone who accepts it hook, line and sinker.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever happened to the idea of "Cohorts" anyway? That seemed much more sensible to me!

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

cohorts > henchmen > cronies > goons > minions

PHIL OSOPHY (Johnney B), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

keith otm. any argument that rests too much on some idea of a 'generation' can be dismissed.

typo acapulco (gcannon), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

xp, good morning randy

typo acapulco (gcannon), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing beats minions, you fool!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My minions can beat your minions, Dan.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm, diced & fried minions served in a salad, with italian dressing.

Monday I went and got a compilation CD which includes a cover of "My Generation" by Oasis.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Which oddly enough I heard the other day. And though I'm an Oasis fan, it was indeed meh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

But it also had a cover of "Yellow Submarine" by Roots Manuva and a banjo madness bluegrass cover of "Lust For Life" plus Tiga's "Hot In Herre" also "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by The Slits so I'm not about to complain, I got my money's worth.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Rah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

In fact I'm now thinking this comp might be better than that one with Jackie Chan and Ani DiFranco singing "Unforgettable" and The Connells cover of "Insane in the Membrane."

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

What is this compilation called? It sounds ace.

Do I really have more in common with, I dunno, Alyssa Milano than with my dad?

This is a good point. It has to be said though that much as I love my dad, I hate his generation (boomer) more than any other. Though I do like their music best.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, if you were to look at music generationally, which I don't, much.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

But the most hateworthy characteristic of the boomers is that they think and act and move as a generation.

My dad was born in 1941, so he falls into the vast, uncategorized expanse between the WWII gen and the boomers.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer this When Pigs Fly.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to have this social studies teacher who had this huge spice rack in his classroom, and like without fail every single day, he'd suddenly pull them out, along with his tuna fish sandwich, and then spice up his sandwich, yelling, "Back in the day, spices were traded. Like GOLD. Spices were like GOLD!" Like every fucking day, wtf? He also made us watch his knee surgery which was gross but he was always vaguely out of it which made it much easier for me and a rotating cast of dumb male friends to throw ourselves to the ground and crawl out of the classroom, humming the theme to Mission Impossible.

Still, the spice thing, wtf? Like GOLD? More like he just wanted to eat his fucking sandwich. It was gross, like he couldn't wait the 20 minutes til the end of class?

Allyzay, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The next year was when I dropped out of high school and as my lovely parting gifts, my friends bought me a huge spice rack and a pile of spices. Which promptly smashed during my cross-country journey, oops.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Geri was high constantly, wasn't she?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely they were all using something to pass the time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by The Slits

oh HELL yeah, it's worth it now.

He also made us watch his knee surgery which was gross but he was always vaguely out of it

best post of at least the last hour.

Jay Dee Sah Mon (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Geri's outfit is pretty good too actually.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No love for Scary's Hip Hop Hobo outfit?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't want baby's dress or sporty's pants?

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like pants! First thing I'm doing when I get home tonight is creating a mix CD that entirely revolves around "Spice Up Your Life" though. I hope I still have all the remixes of it!!! That's the best song ever!!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

*gareth face*

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom has slain me. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Will you stop making the Gareth face if I do it in my underwear?

We used to have this great dance for it too! Seriously, it's like the greatest song ever, and it's totally racist, wtf is up with the whole "yellow man" verse?

Allyzay, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, the more I'm trying to avoid doing work and the more I'm thinking about this issue, I'm pretty sure the Spice Girls are the pinnacle of artistic achievement in the 20th century and I'm totally going to Tower to repurchase ALL of their cds today. Well except the one without Geri, they're kind of for shit without her. Inexplicably since she can't sing or dance or do much of anything at all. But for real, look at these outfits!

WTF WHY DON'T I HAVE THESE OUTFITS WHY CAN I NOT BUY THEM ANYWHERE WHY DOES GOD FORESAKE ME???

Allyzay, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Beware too much Spice talk, R*n T****o will sense it and end up over here, somehow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Why was Geri always in a catsuit?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Because Geri was the best one, duh!!! LOOK AT HER FUCKING BOOTS MAN!!!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i still blame geri for the return of platforms...

Jay Dee Sah Mon (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)
