I am going at the end of the month, for 4-5 days! Mostly planning to rent a bike and zip around looking at architecture but any "mustn't miss" recommendations will be well-received!

hmmmm is biking do-able in December? I have not investigated what sort of weather to expect
Apparenly we will be getting to copenhage via Helsinki and ESTONIA.
If I do not get to have a drink with Tuomas I will die.

Going for work next month. Will be there a week. I think I'll catch a couple shows at Vega, but other than that I have no plans outside of work stuff. Any recommendations?

I fucking love this city and am super envious!
― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 01:55 (eleven years ago)
I love Copenhagen too!
Go to a bakery and get a danish! Last time I was there, they had them alongside the river, so you could sit beside it and watch tiny boats go by while you eat. If you want to see rock n roll go to a place called Drone. It might be in Christiania, not sure. If that place is still around, definitely check it out. It's a little anarchist commune in the middle of town, but they don't allow cameras. Actually they might have shut it down a few years ago, not sure...
Just walking around the town is enough, honestly! It's such a huge place, with big, wide-opened patios, and you will see many amazing statues and giant buildings. Once I came upon a cool college-level art show housed in a church that was hundreds of years old. You never know what you will see!

Is Tivoli really cool? It sounds amazing, but when I was over there, it seemed so expensive. Is it worth it?
― ▴▲ ▴TH3CR()$BY$H()W▴▲ ▴ (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 05:31 (eleven years ago)
Christiania is still around, though personally I found it a bit more depressing than cool. The concept itself is great (a self-governing freetown in the middle of the city), and I bet in the 60s and 70s it was a cool place to live, but nowadays it seems to have become a shabby neighbourhood where tourists come to gawk at the hippies and weirdos, and score some weed... (Probably the most famous aspect of Christiania is that weed is openly sold there, even though it's illegal in Denmark, though these days the drug trade seems to be run by Eastern Europeans biker-types, so I'm not sure if it actually benefits the community in any way.)
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 09:26 (eleven years ago)
Tivoli is your basic amusement park, nice as such, but I didn't find anything amazing about it... Though in the summer (maybe in the spring too?) they have evening concerts which are included in the admission fee, it might be worth a visit if there's some band/act you'd want to see.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 09:28 (eleven years ago)
But yeah, if you're in Copenhagen and want to experience one of its unique features, you should definitely visit Christiania at least once, just don't expect your mind be blown by it.
I'd also recommend renting a bicycle: Copenhagen is very bike-friendly (among the European capitals I've been to, only Amsterdam has more bikes), and bicycle paths are everywhere. Copenhagen is pretty small too, so if you rent a bike, you probably don't need to use the public transport at all.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 09:35 (eleven years ago)
I was very pleased to take a short bus ride to visit Grundtvigs Kirke:
http://www.e-architect.co.uk/images/jpgs/copenhagen/grundtvig_kirke_50.jpg
but then I'm a proper sucker for Scandinavian Expressionism. Also it won't make you well-fed so is probably off-topic.
― Tim, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 09:43 (eleven years ago)
If want to see the whole city from a bird's view, you can climb atop this church, which is pretty close to Christiania:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_Our_Saviour,_Copenhagen
In the afternoons there's also carillon music played there, which is nice. I have to warn you though, the safety on the spiral stairs is pretty low, so if you have acrophobia, it might be too much for you. When I was there, only a handful of the people who paid the admission fee actually managed to climb all the way to the top of the stairs.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 09:52 (eleven years ago)
"the safety railing on the spiral stairs is pretty low"
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 09:53 (eleven years ago)
Drone is at Nørrebro, not Christania, and is a pretty cool place. Lots of pretty girls. I love Tivoli, what is amazing about it is mainly that it's placed right in the center of the city - right next to city hall. Apart from that, yeah, rent a bike, ride around and see the city. Go to Louisiana north of town if you want to see art.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 11:00 (eleven years ago)
I visited the city very briefly in January. Tivoli was closed because of (re)construction work but if I remember correctly it would re-open this month. A friend of mine recommended Radio for getting well fed, but that, too, was closed (just for holidays though)...
― willem, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 11:41 (eleven years ago)
I'm going there in a few weeks! Cant wait
― kinder, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 11:42 (eleven years ago)
I just came back from Copenhagen yesterday, and Tivoli is indeed open again.
If you like to do some shopping, a road called "Gammel Kongevej" has some nice boutiques with clothes and design, and a couple of well-stocked records stores, Sound Station and Goldmine. (The latter is located in small recess on the north side of the road.)
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 11:56 (eleven years ago)
when we went to christiania it was about 9:30am and no-one was around. lazy bloody hippies
― thomasintrouble, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 12:04 (eleven years ago)
Also, Gamle Ole (old, smelly cheese) is an interesting food experience
― thomasintrouble, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 12:08 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, Gammel Kongevej is cool. Also, 5 min from where I live.
The well-fed thing: The places called Madklubben are quite good and cheap. Different menus. If you're going to Drone, then start the evening by eating the Quatro Funghi pizza at Leif's at Ægirsgade. Four kinds of mushroom, parmasan and mascarpone cheese, pine nuts and truffel oil. Bindia is good takeaway indian. If you're at Gammel Kongevej, take HC Ørstedsvej north and go to Vietsense for fine vietnamese food. Also: Smørrebrød. Huset ved det Grønne Træ at Gammeltorv is the best in the game right now, but Husmann's is also a classic, and the three places at Frederiksberg, called Haverne - take Gammel Kongevej west, then turn south, it'll take you right past - are quite good as well.

Hey Frederik, I might be visiting Copenhagen again this spring/summer (my gf is currently studying in Roskilde, and her sister and the sister's gf live in CPH, so we can crash at their place), since your local, would you happen to know any good clubs that play electronic/dance music (preferably not too mainstream)? I'd love to go dancing, but I haven't really checked out the clublife the previous time I've been there.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 12:27 (eleven years ago)
Well, I don't really know that much about it, but my club-friends talk about Harvey's at Kødbyen. Or maybe Culture Box, though apparantly it's not such a great place. Or Rust at Nørrebro, they have some cool names at times, other times it's a hipster-blog hell-hole. I'd check if there is a good DJ anywhere, but I don't think Copenhagen is the best place for clubbing.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 13:11 (eleven years ago)
If you're interested in architecture I really could go on and on. Maybe I have upthread. Denmark has had a couple of different moments of being the site of really great intense design culture, and that's made for some cool buildings. Depends how heavy you're into that kinda thing obv. Seconding the Louisiana rec - it's a small train trek to get up there but it is a wonderful setting for art, very well-scaled, very nicely integrated with the landscape, good light. I can't tell good art from a hole in the ground but if they have it, it'll look good there and you'll have the peace and quiet to look at it. They also have a sculpture garden with some big names so there may in fact be significant holes in the ground. Anyway, I wouldn't necessarily go if you only had two or three days there, but if longer, sure.

― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 16:11 (eleven years ago)
My favorite part of Copenhagen is all of it, by bike! A much easier place to bike in Amsterdam imo--the bike laneage is superb and you don't have as much navigating-around-pedestrians.
My life goal is to live in Copenhagen when it is not too cold and Tokyo when it is not too hot.

What's Copenhagen likely to be like in mid-November? (Around the 18th, so possibly before Xmas events kick in).

― Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 22 October 2014 13:06 (ten years ago)
Hm, I don't know. Depends on what you want to do. But the city is kinda small, can really get anywhere on a bike. I'd say Vesterbro, Nørrebro or Frederiksberg, but some prefer to be more central or at Christianshavn.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 13:09 (ten years ago)
How about Amager Vest? Found a cheap place there near a metro station that looks ok.
What we want to do - not much really, see a few museums/galleries, preferably involving minimal walking. It's our first time in Denmark so I think anything and everything will be interesting tbh.
I have heard the city is beautiful in winter - is there a good place to get a good view of the city?
― Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 22 October 2014 15:57 (ten years ago)
Amager Vest is very suburban in feel IIRC, but very close (by transit/bike) to the center of things. I could imagine that being a fine base unless you want to stay someplace that has street life right outside your door etc.
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 16:57 (ten years ago)
Amager Vest is a very newly build area, and there really isn't much life. But yeah, it's build around the metro, which means you can be at the center of the city in 15 min, close to a lot of museums. So yeah, that's a fine area to stay. There aren't that many places with views, there aren't that many high buildings. But Christianskirken on Christianshavn is one of the best.
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 18:17 (ten years ago)
We ended up staying near Amagerbro station which is probably the place I was talking about upthread. It was quite suburban as you say but easy to get around from, and we liked the building we stayed in. I did make it to the top of Christianskirken!
Anyway we liked it there enough to go again this August for my birthday. This time we are staying in Christianshavn near Christiania. I'm keeping an eye on the listings for the Loppen venue but they have nothing up for early August yet. Are there any decent record shops in that area? Last time there was a stall in the Christiania market hall which had some bootleggy looking reissues of some cool albums (I think some Throbbing Gristle stuff) but not much else.

Oh, Amagerbro, I thought you meant somewhere completely different! Christianshavn and Amagerbro is quite close to each other, through don't tell people who live at Christianshavn :) You'll be so close to the rest of town that it should be possible to go to pretty much every record shop. I don't know if there's anything particularly at Christianshavn. There's a couple ok cheap Indian restaurants around there.

Going to be in CPH june 22-28 for a conference. So far the only major planned dinner outing is warpigs for some barbecue and heavy metal. What else is delicious? Massive bonus points for having interesting beers on tap.
― trm (tombotomod), Saturday, 14 June 2025 21:25 (two weeks ago)
There's Nørrebro Bryghus which is good mainly for the beer. You can also do the Bæst/Brus combo at Nørrebro, very good Italian and then a beerpub across the street.
Having a two-year old means I almost never go out to eat any more, but when we do we often go to Propaganda close to Vesterport for Korean. Their yukhoe is incredible, and then there's fried chicken for the main course. It goes very well with beer or makgeolli, but I don't think the beer is that unusual.
― Frederik B, Sunday, 15 June 2025 06:13 (two weeks ago)
Kristinedal Burger on Studiestraede is imo the best in town, I don't buy into the Gasoline Grill hype at all. Peders on Sankt Peder is a great basement bar nearby.
Warpigs is not nearly as metal as you think it is, but the food is well worth it. Don't overestimate your appetite and order the Texas Smorrebrod, better to go with a mixed platter and some extra sausage. Definitely stop into Fermentorum on the way in.
If you're in the Warpigs area already then the Åben taproom is great. Can't speak to the food but they're my favourite Danish brewery. Don't do anything unusual but do what they do very well.
Anarkist Bar opposite the train station and on the Tivoli border has surprisingly good pizza and a big tap lost.
Brus is exactly the sort of food you'd expect from a taproom but the range of beers To Øl have on makes it well worth a visit.
If you're in the Warpigs area then I'd drop into

Thanks all again for your recommendations. Warpigs and Aben were great, Reffen was terrific, also had some decent food in Orestad which is where we spent a lot of the week because that’s where my event was. Had some terrific charcuterie in the old city too but can’t remember where! And can confirm for other outsiders visiting that the hotdogs are excellent.
