What songs do you want played at your funeral?

I had to make a list in health class because I would not draw my tombstone. It was entertaining. I like to think that I could spread my tastes even after I'm dead.

Maria, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Teengenerate" by the Dictators. "Dirty Deeds" by AC/DC.

duane, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maria I cant remember last time you posted a question. That said I've only been here a month or so.

Er..........I get embarassed answering any questions to do with music with the word Spiritualized.

What about Mogwai. Contemplative and offensive. Suits my funeral perfectly.

Ronan, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why were you supposed to be drawing tombstones in a health class?

Kris, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, I have been bankrupt of ideas. I blame it on school.

We were drawing tombstones in health class because it was supposed to help us cope with the idea of death or something. I don't know. It was stupid.

Maria, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i want the spice girls "who do you think you are" played at my funeral. i want my funeral to be a party, where all my loved ones get smashed and make lots of toasts to how great i was. everyone MUST dance or no booze for you.

di, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I dunno. Funeral Tango? It might be funny. Probably not.

Ally C, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Assuming that my funeral includes a lavish memorial concert to commemorate my immense contribution to the music industry...

juno - the sea looked like lead super furry animals - fragile happiness built to spill - stab the microphones - karl blau the dears - end of a hollywood bedtime story and, the grand finale: DJ Shadow and Kool Keith (since UNKLE are dufunct) - guns blazing

Simon H., Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"killed by death," of course.

jess, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i will not let this insult to kool g. rap stand.

ethan, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I want Hanle y to serenade my mourners with songs chockful of his scatological non-sequiturs. That, or Metal Machine Music. Anyone getting anything in my will will have to sit through either or they will be disinherited!

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

whatever, i'll be dead anyway.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'ouija board, ouija board' by Morrissey.

The Dirty Vicar, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

tad you bastard, you stole my MMM! let's have a jopint funeral.

Geoff, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

guess it should be 'i put a spell on you' cuz some earthy feelings are supposed to defeat our biological limitations.

francesco, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Boston - More Than A Feeling.

jel, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Super Furries said they'd want "Stayin' Alive"!

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ding Dong the Witch is Dead!!

mark s, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Parasites Will Be Excited When You're Dead", Modest Mouse, just to tease my family. "Heroin", The Velvet Underground, because it's one of my favorites. I think it's more of a song to be living to, though.

capricious pants, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Though I shall leave clear instructions that none of my future grand kids will be allowed to play a joke, by putting on my old Morbid Angel tape. The last time I played that, there was a freak hail storm.

jel, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been thinking about this a lot the past week. For the processional hymn, when they roll the casket in, I'd like "The Theme from the Good, the Bad & the Ugly". I'm a bit sick of it, actually, but in this context it'd be nice. And it's good to start off with a song everyone knows. When the gifts are brought up to the altar, I'd have "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies as the offertory hymn. During communion, I'd like "No. 1 in Heaven" by Sparks. And during the post- communion reflective period, it'd be either a Bowie instrumental like "Warzawa" or "Weeping Wall", or the Monkees' "Porpoise Song" or Fairport Convention's "Farewell Farewell". Finally, for the recessional, when they roll me out, it'd be Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky"--something more upbeat to get everyone revved up for the kickass reception afterwards.

I don't know if I could get away with all this at a Catholic mass, though. So Maria, what was on your list?

Arthur, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Too capricious, I want 'Heroin' too, but 'ATP' could do fantastically well...however, I agree on the idea of a party, or better, a big meal where my favourite menu should be served, how egocentric is that? They should play 'tainted love' and 'being boring' and 'dishes' too.

Laetitia, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s = maggie t?

Graham, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s = willow as you well know

mark s, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Weird Al.

Mike Hanle y, Sunday, 7 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Take on Me" by Aha, and "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" by George Michael.

rainy, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"I'm Set Free", Velvet Underground, or "Ride Into the Sun". I can't decide. Indecision will be the death of me.

And I want Guided By Voices' "Wondering Boy Poet (Suitcase Version)" on endless repeat in my coffin. And James Brown. He's good for the soul.

Trevor, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"I'm Set Free" was on my list, too. I had twelve songs on it, so no problems with choices. I also want "I Have Been Floated" by the Olivia Tremor Control, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," and "The Whole Shebang" by Grant Lee Buffalo. There were several more that were on the list for the purpose of being a music nazi but that were totally unrelated to funerals.

Maria, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You had my sarcastic answers. Here are my serious ones:

"Space Oddity," "Waterloo Sunset," and FZ's "Watermelon in Easter Hay."

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If I'm pissed off when I croak, or when I write the will, though, it'll be "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better When You're Gone" and the Smiths' "Asleep."

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"kids in america", or maybe "centrefold", or maybe "born to lose", by Dean Martin...

cameron bain, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Li'l Ol Wine Drinker Me" by same

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"When I See You Smile" by Bad English, definitely.

Ally, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

actually "shades" , also by Dean Martin (written by Lee Heazlewood!) would be pretty good too: "these shades can't hide the way i feel..."

cameron bain, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Brim Full of Asha'

two years pass...
the other day, this kid at school told me that i was going to die before i turned 16, and thats in like 2 months. So ive been thinkin, i would want, "build a bridge" limp bizkit, "stand here with me" creed, "Crossroads" bonethugs, "Everything" StereoFuse, "stigmatized" the calling, "screaming infedelities" dashboard confesstional, "the distance" evan and jaron, "always be my baby" mariah carey, "wonderwall" oasis, "blury" puddle of mudd, "ill be missing you" puff daddy, "wherever you will go" the calling. Anyone of those will do.
When i die, i want my funeral to be happy, i want lots of pictures of me and my family and friends and boyfriend put up and I dont want anyone to dress up. I want them all to wear yellow or one of my fav. colors, not black, and i want a casket that everyone can sign and lots of baby yellow roses. Just a room filled with my favorite things. If people start to cry too much, well hell, break out some Nelly and Ja Rule and start breakin it down! ha!

I'd be positively perverse and force everyone to listen to Scott Walker...

Oh I can see them now
Clutching a hankerchief
And blowing me a kiss
Discreetly asking how
How came he died so young
Or was he very old
Is the body still warm
Or is it already cold
All doors are open wide
They grope around inside
At my desk my drawers my trunk
There's nothing left to hide
Some love letters are there
And an old photograph
They've laid my poor soul bare
And now all they do is laugh

Oh I can see them all
So formal and so stiff
Like a seargant at arms
At a policeman's ball
And everybody's pushing
To be the first in line
Their hearts upon their sleeves
Like a ten cent valentine
The old women are there
Too old to give a damn
They've brought along the kids
Who don't know who I am
They're thinking about the price of my funeral bouquet
What they're thinking isn't nice
For now they'll have to pay

Oh I see all of you
All of my phoney friends
Who can't wait for it ends
Who can't wait till it's through
Oh I see all of you
You've been laughing all these years
Now all that you have left
Are a few crocodile tears
Ah you don't even know
That you're entering your hell
As you leave my cemetary
You think you're doing well
With that one who's at your side
You're as proud as you can be
Ah she's going to make you cry
But not the way you cried for me

Oh I can see me now
So cold and so alone
As the flowers slowly die
In my field of little bones
Oh I can see me now
I can see me at the end
Of this voyage that I'm on
Without a love without a friend
Now all this that I see
Is not what I deserve
They really have a nerve
To say these things to me
No girls just bread and water
And your money you must save
For there'll be nothing left for us
When you're dead and in your grave

Have a party, be sad, I don't care. I won't be there! Actually, in fact, don't do anything because I'd be mad if all my friends had a party I couldn't go to.

Just sent my father off. He had...

Petite Fleur - Chris Barber and His Jazz Band
Crazy - Patsy Cline
Sweet Georgia Brown - Ella Fitzgerald.

Pretty mainstream stuff I admit. I chose the first one - he loved Brit trad jazz and particularly Chris Barber and it was nice to have something to follow him in that a lot of his friends knew.

Surmounter, Saturday, 8 September 2007 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

I would like for Elton John to rewrite one of his crappy lite-rock hits in my honor. The obvious choice is "Honky Cat."

Oilyrags, Saturday, 8 September 2007 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

The hokey-jokey answer would be "The Ants Go Marching One-By-One", as a sing-along, with an especially jaunty rendition of the lines: and they all go marching - down - in the ground - to get out- of the rain.

The serious answer is: I do not care. My funeral will not be for my pleasure or benefit. It will be a time for the living to gather together in my memory. I'll let them decide what works best for them.

Aimless, Sunday, 9 September 2007 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

It will be a time for the living to gather together in my memory. I'll let them decide what works best for them.

Yes, but just once I'd like to be able to force my aged relatives to sit through some Autechre..."this is for all the times I had to listen to Ruby Murray..."

The theme tune to Golden Girls is great.
