this could well be the shortest thread ever, cozen!!

(have you had a power cut or s.th?)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 13 November 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess on one hand it would make the streets more dangerous at night, but on the other you'd be able to see the stars. It's nice when there is a power cut and the sky becomes illuminated, and you realise there are more stars than there are on most nights.

i jst want to know: why do we have streetlights now as standard? i guess there'll be some easy historical/economic contingency style answer i'm interested in the history of them and if other ppl have any other things to say about them. do they ever look alien to you like out of place? i get this lots with streetlights and policemen.

the world w.out policemen. wht's it like?

dark.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 13 November 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it was explained in "What the Indutrialists did for us" just the other night! Rich people used to employ young lads to guide them with a lantern across the streets of London, but sometimes these lads would be criminals, and there partner in crime would attack the rich dude and steal his money! The streets were mean, then some guy invented the gas-light, everyone was like "wow, what a great idea", and then they were put up all over London. That's your answer.
