What toothbrush do you use?

Straightforward question - there are so many space-age toothbrushes these days I doubt any of us will be able to give the same answer. So describe the brush you use, or your ideal brush, or what you hate.

Like, for example, brushes that claim to be bendy. wtf? I mean, the new brush I tried out this morning (sounds like I take them on a test drive) is called "ultra-flex" or somesuch, but I noticed that if anything the bendy bit is reinforced and, if I gave my gums too hard a going over, it was another part of the handle that flexed!! Also, part of the "flexy" bit sticks out and irritates. Moan moan moan.

Toothbrush talk, yo. Go!

I have one that is blue in the middle & the blue disappears when I need to change it. (this is pretty often though as I chew on my toothbrushes!)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 14 November 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I use a Colgate brush with a slightly bulbous handle that doesn't fit in any toothbrush holder and rubbery bit for gripping. The head has different lengths of bristle for cleaning the sides and the gaps between toothy pegs. The bristles are now hopelessly splayed due to my over-zealous, scorched-earth brushing style. I need a new toothbrush.

robster (robster), Friday, 14 November 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I use the cheapest generic toothbrush that I can buy. It's got to be Medium, and it's got to have a purple handle. Apart from that, I'm not picky.

I have no time for fancy toothbrushes. (This may be why my teeth occasionally bleed.)

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 14 November 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(That may be the grossest thing I've ever admitted on ILX and I probably should have logged out for it.)

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 14 November 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

What, that your teeth occasionally bleed? Doesn't everyone's?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 14 November 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Do they? I thought that was just a weird horrible thing that my teeth did. They bleed profusely when I brush my teeth. And even sometimes when I eat apples. Or bananas. I don't think I have horrible breath (that I know of... I've never had any complaints, and believe me, HSA would let me know) and my gums don't appear to be in bad shape and I don't get toothaches or anything. My teeth just bleed. (I have a baby tooth which never came out which irritates my gums something awful.)

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 14 November 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonicare. I gave in. The first ten times you use it, it's almost unbearable because of the tickly tingling. After that, your teeth have never felt cleaner. When I floss, I usually come up with nothing. Worth every penny if you ask me.

Dancing Queen, Friday, 14 November 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine bleed occasionally. I assumed it was due to the brushing style noted upthread or the lack of professional dental care.

robster (robster), Friday, 14 November 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Your gums bleed not your teeth, they shouldn't!!! It is either due to poorly gums or scrubbing with your toothbrush.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 14 November 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

What Rob said. However, I have bought a FLASH MOUTHWASH that claims you can actually SEE the shit that it rinses out of your mouth. I apparently have little green globules in mine that look like tiny space mutants. I also have started flossing more often, though every day is an unattainable dream. I have my mum's crappy gappy teeth and they'll all fall out anyway.

In fact, I keep meaning to look into dental insurance. Is it true there are mutual societies of some kind which are not-for-profit and therefore presumably offer the best deals?

Back to toothbrushes, I am quite a fan of Macleans The Toothbrush, though its small head, while recommended by dentists, doesn't really satisfy (always the way, eh, ladies?).

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 14 November 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah gums bleed not teeth...this means you should really be seeing the dentist twice a year and start flossing. mine always bleed and i always resolve to start flossing but never do

vic, Friday, 14 November 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Softish bristles and a sorta red/pink stripe on the handle? Something like that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

This morning I used ya girl's toofbrush...ZING!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey so did I! Oh it was mine. I haven't got the faintest idea what kind it is, I can't even remember the colour. Red and white I think.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I use a MUJI 6 toothbrushes for £1.25 toothbrush and so does Tracer Hand.

Ed (dali), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I got an electric toothbrush for $3 and I will never go back to manual brushing again. It's faster, leaves your mouth feeling cleaner, and gives you a nice little skull vibro-massage that is quite addicting.

BrianB, Friday, 14 November 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonicare. It totally tickled for the first week, almost unbareable. But im over that now. Its all good. Not necessarily worth the $60 though...and the replacement heads are like $20. Amazing. Eh?

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

a red one!!!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

some oral b thing. I try to replace them every month. My wife uses the electric one mentioned above and likes it. We don't have a power outlet in the bathroom so I haven't done the soniccare thing but I'm so freakishly compulsive about flossing and brushing my teeth it doesn't seem like I need it.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
I've requested a Sonicare brush from Santa. I'm hoping I'll see the difference.

T/S - Manual or Electric??

Rumpie, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh I love electric! But I can't seem to find the replacements (or whatever you call'em). I'm hesitant to buy a new one.

Nathalie is in Da Base II Dark (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

I just got a sonicare. Wikipedia sez "Independent research finds that most electric toothbrushes are no more effective than the manual variety," but I don't believe 'em! My teeth feel like they've just been released from a 30-year prison sentence of marginal dental care.

Anybody have any love/hate stories about their electric toothbrush?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 12:39 (seventeen years ago)

wikipedia is wrong (shocker). one of my best friends is a dentist and he says electrics are better. mainly because you're less tempted to overbrush and kill your gums.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

he also says this is the consensus of every dentist he's ever worked with.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 12:43 (seventeen years ago)

Flossing and mouthwash or salt rinses are equally important as is cleaning your tongue and cheeks, you need to get to know your mouth and make sure you get stuff out of areas where it tends to gather.

My dentist is pretty good with this stuff.

I like my sonicare.

Jarlrmai, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

I wore out one of the old skool sonicares and got the new one (where the brush head just pushes on instead of having that base that screws on to the handle). It also came with a little tanning booth to sanitize the brush heads with glowing UV light. I like it.

Jaq, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

Sonicare definitely makes my mouth feel cleaner.

Michael White, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

ooo...i want one of those toothbrush sanitizers.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

but then what do you sanitize THAT with?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

a wallogina?

ken c, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

but then what do you sanitize THAT with?

oh god. this is a bad train of thought for me.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

Man, is there anything they can't do? (xpost)
