Was told I would hear back by the end of the week...and it's Friday. Keep posted for updates as they happen.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

just checked my home answering machine...nothing

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

still nothing.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Update!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

we've got retired employment expert F.G. Huffenpuffle in the studio with us, Mr. Huffenpuffle, any comments on the lack of activity on the job offer front for Mr. Mann?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

aaargh mann, i'm going through the exact same thing. fucking anticipation here!! i was supposed to be getting a phone call today. i wish this was over already, i mean i might just get a PA stint there if not the assistantship i interviewed for, and i'm kinda already expecting that and won't be disappointed..i just want the phone to ring already!!

what job are u waiting to hear back from?

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Huffenpuffle?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

UPDATE!!!!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

why don't you call THEM? Usually potential employers enjoy that sort of initiative.

hstencil, Friday, 14 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

or so I hear anyway.

hstencil, Friday, 14 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a job with a non-fiction TV production company. (they've won an 3mmy!) as a writer/researcher on a new series they're developing a pitch for (so, not exactly a lot of job security here).
And I did call them 3 times to secure the interview after they left a message on my home machine.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm waiting to hear back from several jobs- I got a call yesterday asking if I had any experience as a line producer, and I almost said yes just to get the job...*fingers crossed*

Vic, do they pay PAs in LA?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, i am also waiting for a call from a "non-fiction" (but mine is specifically "reality") production company...but its not for a writerr/researcher role, or else i would ask u the name. i hope at least one of us gets something!!

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

haha! I am waiting to hear from a documentary in pre-production-maybe it's a scam! ;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

they do @d@ml, but it's shit pay..but for ME it would be FINE since i have never gotten paid in a job in-the-field-i-want-to-work-in, and would also be enough for me to live off of, so i'm cool w/ it

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

update:--I just got a reverse query letter from an editor at a magazine who likes my stuff and wants me to write for him! I didn't seek him out, he sought me out? I hope that wasn't my good fortune for the day.

mine is more documentary, thought the company does do some reality. it could involve WORLD TRAVEL if the series gets the green light!
Good luck Vic.

Also, I should probably quit tying up my line by calling my answering machine every two minutes.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

actually it depends what you're talking about..to PA on a small indie, usually the shoot is a week or two, and that's often little to no pay at all. on a feature, yes, but it's only a few months at most; on a television show, you're lucky enough to get a standard amount for a good amount of time

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

mann, where are you? have you written stuff for the tube before?

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

nope, all my experience is print (actually a bit of radio).
I'm in western canada. r3gina to be exact.
I don't want to put the name of the company and jinx myself or have them g00gle themselves and see all the threads about how much I hate my current job.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I should say - good luck, both of you!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

oh cool. there must not be a lot of television stuff based up there, so this must be some opportunity..

@d@ml - good luck to you too, what's the documentary about?

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

UPDATE: No messages.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Vic, I don't actually know yet. They are playing their cards very close to their chest, but apparently "the Sundance people are interested". (but then, aren't they always? ;) )

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that's a default by now for every other prod to say =)

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

doo doo doo...
of course, if I get this job, it'll be the end of me on ILX...

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I should ask you- another prod company (a good one!) expressed mild interest in possibly taking me on as a "consultant"-now, I'll be honest, I have only ever heard this word used in application to a financial services role or something like that, any idea what it would mean in the grand scheme of film production? Make me look smarter than I am! ;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(sorry for taking over your thread, Horace, but it passes the time while yr waiting, eh?)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(no problem adam, it's not like I've never derailed a thread)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

hm, tha can mean a financial -advisement role, but it could be just about anything they want to ask you about..or even want from you. do they know where you live? maybe they want to make you a location scout "consultant" because they want to shoot around your place! it could mean any number of things that they might want help with - it's best to ask them specifically what they're referring to, and how long it would last. '

mann - oh, i guess it's a win/lose thing then! are u certain you can't be an occassional poster?

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'd guess they need a specialist skill from you for part of the production schedule.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Vic - I guess it would have something to do with post, because they asked to see my editor's reel (I have one, but it's awful, beyond a joke).

(x-post: Thanks Suzy. The idea of myself as any kind of "specialist" is somewhat baffling, however...)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, but I probably won't be as mind-numbingly bored. At least not at first. (i mean, I'm currently in the top five for the last 30 days--or I was yesterday)
Sure I'll check in on weekends, and maybe nights, but it won't be the same...

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, good luck and everything, people waiting to hear about jobs.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"Specialist" could mean any number of things though..so it helps when you narrow it down to post. Now you know which area they'd need you in, but as they wanted to see your editing reel, that doesn't mean you might not be working during production, since some ppl start editing their takes early on...

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

slightly off topic:

so, about a month ago, or crap, almost two months ago, when our interns were new, one of them asked me what I do.
"Basically everything that nobody else wants to do," I told him, rattling off a list of my various duties.
"Oh, so you're kind of like the specialist," he said without a trace of irony or sarcasm.

He now outranks me.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it would be nice if it worked out, but I'm not really counting on it- only someone with a tenuous grip on reality would hire me on the "strengths" of that shonky reel. :)

(x-post:Horace, you need to get out of there)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

update: no message

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I kept waiting for this thread to happen.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ach, I should have left a message on your voice mail about how you got the job, and then gone "PSYCHE!". What a fool I was.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

update?!??

aaah. i think i want to just go to sleep. i'm starting to face the harsh reality by now.

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you could still do it...

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

If I can figure out how to quit my job and still collect some form of reasonable income, I would nap A LOT. I love napping. If napping was a service my current employer provided, I would be branch managaer by now.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

both of you, call them back now.

hstencil, Friday, 14 November 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

will do.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"Uh, hi, this Huckleberry, I just wanted to make sure that you got my writing samples okay."
"Oh hi Huck, yeah, I got them. I haven't had a chance to look them over yet. Hopefull I will real soon. We should be making a decision early next week and we'll let you know early next week (pause) either way."
"Great, have a super weekend!"

I think I sweat a gallon during that 30 second exchange and I felt like I was pestering.

Happy, Hstencil?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

That is how it works, though. h is not wrong.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, it's just, I feel so vulnerable when I call them. I mean, aren't they more likely to offer me the job if they think I'm indifferent, if I play hard to get?
What's the point of having feminine wiles if I never get to use them?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

hey huck, h & all are 100% correct
the job i'm at right now (but not doing) - i got a few months ago and probably wouldn't have it had it not been for me saving them the trouble of dailing a number.
i almost let my nervousness get the best of me and had i - i may still be out of (full time) work.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Huck, no. Similarly you'll never get a blowjob if you don't ask for one. You just have to know how to ask in the right way.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Horace-It's all about the difference between being "cute" and "avaialable".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you for shopping at Blither and Blather, we hope you'll come again at some indefinite future time, possibly to make purchase, or even just to look around.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

When a job becomes available, but there's nobody around to take it, does it make a sound?

*zen*

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

And...does it still pay?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay...here's the deal. I have been contacted by an employer who I interviewed with in the summer. They offered me the job, and I turned it down nicely and with justification, and asked if I could keep in touch. At the time, I thought there would be better things out there. Now, with three months of job-searching behind me, I see it for the opportunity it is. I have pestered them on and off for a while (for reasons that I hope will become clear), and they now want to "talk" about a possible position, apparently much like the one I turned down. No offers, yet.

Here's where it gets complicated. Without naming names, this job is in fact at a school where I was intending to apply for graduate study, beginning next Fall. It pays just (barely?) enough for me to live on, but I would have access to all kinds of goodies and toys that I would otherwise pay for. I can also take one free class per semester whilst working (and they don't come cheap at this place). So far so good, but I would be earning notably less money than I do as a temp, although this is the closest to an "industry" job that I am turning up at the moment. The other (good?bad?) thing is that I would be working on a shift system (I believe this department is open 24 hours) while my wife works 9-5. I would also only be working during each semester, meaning that I would have to find other work during breaks.

Besides all this, they would probably realize come february that I am applying to study there. Would this be good or bad? Is it a betrayal of any kind? Perhaps it might help? I would be happy (nay delighted) to carry on working there during the course of my study (SHOULD I get in). This is all probably a bit premature, and possibly bad karmically, but any advice would be welome.

h@h@ (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see how that's a betrayal at all but maybe I'm missing something. If you accept the job, what you do on your off hours (including study) is none of their concern. I think I'm totally missing something.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I think you're pointing out what should be obvious to me. Thank you.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I don't see any problems either. What would they care?

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess maybe I was being paranoid that it would seem like I am taking the job with an ulterior motive, but jeez, it's not like I'm applying to be governor or anything.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The ulterior motive of paying them tons of money???

Go for it! You'll be happier doing what you enjoy.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ya, they certainly wouldn't want you going to another school.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Update: I have an interview for a position I applied for months ago, but the hiring process was put off - apparantly they are now ready to fill the job. It's for a case manager position at a litigation graphics company. I'm excited about this because I know about both graphics and communicating with attorneys, so I think I posess some unique qualities. The interview is Monday; I'll post more news as I hear it.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Good luck, Sean!

Go for it, nordic!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Sarah JOTO

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, what's JOTO?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a kitty.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Jump On The Orange - it's hipster slang.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.kantrowitz.com/kantrowitz/joto/posed3.jpg
Joto!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay Joto the Wonderbeast! And good luck Sean!

(JOTO is slang trying to replace the perfectly fine OTM, and so therefore I mock this attempt at forced neologism.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Taking a cue from hstencil and Huck, I called the hiring manager about that job I have been interviewing for since JULY. The manager was very apologetic and kept referring cryptically to "internal issues" that had had to be resolved; apparently I should hear something by the week after next. She did say that she would have let me know if I "wasn't in the running."

Anyhow, thanks to the people on this thread for helping me to find the balls to call and follow up. That was good advice, I think.

quincie, Friday, 21 November 2003 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

JAMMIN' ON THE ONE, a hipper, more street way of saying OTM, they can coexist Ned. There's no need to feel threatened.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

SA DA TAY!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

huck is ojnkotbtm¡

dyson (dyson), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

update:waiting on that call...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

update: I now have an interview in 45 minutes time ( I happen to be working just across the street)...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

update:they hired me on the spot.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 22 November 2003 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

update:no, really they did.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 22 November 2003 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well dang! That's cool! :-) So now you can afford to fly down to LA more and get drunk with us.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 November 2003 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha- "afford"!

(thanks!)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 22 November 2003 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

No, you don't understand, you WILL afford to come down more and get drunk with us.

And yer welcome!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 November 2003 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF? Rock on, Nord!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 22 November 2003 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

woo-hoo! WTG Nordic v. JOTO and also OTW and maybe ROCO

huckleberrymann, Sunday, 23 November 2003 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I start tomorrow-more updates soon.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 23 November 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Congratulations, Adam. I have an interview tomorrow that I'm excited about, but I've heard that if things go well it's just the first of three interviews. In any case I feel remarkably positive about it.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 24 November 2003 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The interview went well I believe. It's going to be a several week process, but aparantly will know by tomorrow if I'm going to be called back for another interview.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

:-) Good to hear!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean, that doesn't mean "no", so stay positive....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm knackered. real work is hard.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 06:11 (twenty-one years ago)

But rewarding!!!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Update: I'm not being called back for a second interview.

After the Thanksgiving weekend I'll be applying for retail jobs. Maybe an arts supply store or Virgin records or something. Unfortunately I'm afraid this will barely cover my bills at the end of the month, but it's better than sitting on my ass. And I'll probably be twice the age of some of my coworkers, but I can't let that bother me.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, no fun. Sorry to hear that -- best of luck with the new applications.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Tough luck Sean. I'm going back into the fray too. You got to the first interview, so you beat out SOME people. There's something to build on.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

What's a little irksome is I got an email with boilerplate language to the effect that they're looking for someone with more specific experience. Since the job was for a litigation graphics company, and I'm experienced in both graphics and dealing with attorneys, I fail to see how my experience could be any more specific. I'm also disappointed that whatever I'll be doing next is going to be a huge step backward for me, if only temporarily. In any case, unemployment isn't going to last that much longer so I have to do something.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"unemployment" meaning unemployment compensation.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(JOTO is slang trying to replace the perfectly fine OTM, and so therefore I mock this attempt at forced neologism.)

Ned, you're just bitter because you never got to wear any Gordon Gartrell fashions.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.gordongartrell.com/images/gord4.jpg

...I don't get it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It's okay, Nicole; _I_ got it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew the good half of the DanandNed mindmeld would get it.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmph.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean, that sucks. If it's any consolation, I am convinced that these decisions are far more arbitrary than they might appear.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)
