Will be in LA Wednesday, November 26th, probably on the west si-iiide

Anyone want to meet up in Santa Monica that Wednesday? Or Venice or Westwood, assuming the MTA buses aren't still on fucking strike by then? :) I should be free all day or night... let us discuss.

(I'm down in LA briefly for thanksgiving, from tues night then flying back up on friday).

(oh, and are the major supermarkets still on strike, too?)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

A number still on strike, I think Ralph's is fine. I would normally be so all over this but I am off to see Placebo that night, so if we could arrange something for early evening there's a possibility...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It's 50/50, but I may also be in town that weekend. Either that, or here in SF for the Matos FAP...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I TOTALLY don't mind an earlyish dinner type thing in the area if it can be arranged! It just depends if you an leave work early, Ned. (and don't want to pressure you there, but if you can't indeed make it up to Seattle in December, this would be our only hope, Luke)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

and @d@m, it would be cool to say hi. :)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, i talked to Spencer about this weeks ago, and said he was tentatively into doing something.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ill be around!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think December will happen, I just still have to play it by ear before the start of the month. We're due out of work up to LA at 5 pm and can take the carpool lane -- I don't think any of us care about the no-name opening act, so it might be possible to, say, aim for something at 7 pm somewhere to be on the safe side? The show is at the Wiltern so if something can be suggested in the general area that would be great, and given that the following day is a holiday for everyone we could try calling you folks after the show as well to see if things are still happening!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha we should totally FAP at RALPH'S - they were still striking at the one on La Brea as of last week! - and buy DONUTS and then go to VONS and get BITCHES and then to JONS to steal milk. or er i should go to sleep but i can't!

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I should probably stop saying that I "might" come down, it makes Ned all crotchety! But yeah, it would be great to meet up...it'll be a real last-minute decision, by the looks of things...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the Brass Monkey is near the Wiltern! walking distance!

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I should be good that night. I work that day (I'm just north of LAX), so I could stop afterwards

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i will have money that night to drink!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, since I will be carless (but not bus-less.. at least not Blue Bus-less!), I would kindly have to ask for a ride and back and arrange thusly. more details later on that.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I should probably stop saying that I "might" come down, it makes Ned all crotchety!

Ya punk! ;-)

the Brass Monkey is near the Wiltern! walking distance!

Are they good for basic bar food as well? Worse comes to worse I need to just get a drive-through bite on the way up or something; otherwise, why not that? Unless there are extreme objections...

i will have money that night to drink!

Hurrah! But Chaki, you buy US all drinks, we surely must finally get you some in turn.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you need at least a few day reservations at the Monkey esp if you want to eat, but you should ask Spencer to make sure. And this would be a perfect FAP to invite the people we haven't met yet (yes Luna this means you) if they'd feel brave enough to encounter us in 3-dimensions

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

CHaki can afford to buy the U.S. all drinks... oh my god, two words: Chaki grind.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I should probably add that I meant we were thinking of coming over Thanksgiving weekend (Friday to Monday probably), but I'm guessing some of you guys will be doing family stuff, I don't know. Another crucial question-Will everything be closed for those four days? After our last visit, Mrs Nordic now refuses to buy fashion anywhere but LA, so this would be an important factor in persuading her that we should come down.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

(oh, you think I'm joking?)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

No. ;-)

Thanksgiving will be closed up, o' course, but after that it's open and then some -- start of the Xmas shopping season in America! Get used to that, this will be the first such season of many for you. ;-) So yes, there will be things happening. I'm actually working on that Friday but that weekend is open -- whether or not I'm available to do much myself is up to my finances at the time (the Meyer/Voigt thing will be pushing it as it is).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I understand, Ned.

Wait, which day of the week does Thanksgiving actually fall on???

leg@l @lien (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Thursday. This Wednesday night thing therefore is conveniently before an actual holiday. Friday is often but not always a holiday as well at many places and schools.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

And this would be a perfect FAP to invite the people we haven't met yet (yes Luna this means you) if they'd feel brave enough to encounter us in 3-dimensions

I'm going home for Thanksgiving, sucka.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

spencer, "I'm just north of LAX" where at?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be on the East Coast till Dec. 1st. I'm always out of town when you come down, DB! And now I'm missing out on a Nordicskillz visit, too.
Dang me.

You should FAP at the HMS Bounty on Wilshire. 3357 Wilshire, to be exact. Apres drive-thru.

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 15 November 2003 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in on this.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Arhur, you're still reading ILX! Hi!

I should say that last night I got the "skinny" on a couple of ILAX0Rs from a certain anonymous person who happens to have met some of you in the flesh...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 15 November 2003 07:11 (twenty-one years ago)

spill the beans please

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Saturday, 15 November 2003 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

WAH. All is undone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 November 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, @d@ml! There's nothing "skinny" about me, I'm afraid.

But, yeah, I'm sort of back. I'm on a two month break from my teaching job, whoopie. I might be up in San Francisco next month. We should
FAP together outrageously.

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 15 November 2003 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah! Welcome back Arthur and all that. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 November 2003 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I might be up in San Francisco next month. We should
FAP together outrageously.

Yay!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Revive. Have we established a definite booze-up spot near the Wiltern? The transit strike being finished, will that be a problem for DB to make it around that area? Etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

*bump* Ned, were you at the Momus / Kimya Dawson show at Spaceland a few months back?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

There was the Momus/Rroland show...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, here's the dealie yo... I will have no car access (due to medical issues) during the time I'm in LA. So, I'll be out and about in Santa Monica, Venice Beach, west side, etc. during the day on Wednesday, November 26th, then will figure out how to bus out to wherever I need to go from the Palisades, which is quite easy. Apparently, as Ned and Barrus noted, the MTA strike is finally over (and probably won't restart again by this Wednesday). (that's a good thing)

NOW.. Things that I urgently need to know:

  • LOCATION: Where exactly? Name? Address? Vegetarian friendly? Bus route friendly? More importantly, Bus-route-at-later-night friendly?

  • TIME: what time are we meeting? What time are we leaving? Ned mentioned a Placebo show, so somehow i'm guessing this whole FAP will have to revolve around that.

  • RIDE BACK TO WEST SIDE POSSIBLE: if the MTA or Blue Bus schedules stop running around the Wiltern Theatre area the time we let go, will I be guaranteed some kind of ride back to the west side, like some market in Santa Monica or Brentwood or something? I'm sure I could call my mom who could pick me up once I get to the west side, but she may be too tired or too busy doing her petsitting rounds around the area, so it's possible I'll have to leave early to catch the last bus. Again, I have to do bus research here, and won't be able to until tomorrow day

If worse comes to worse, and this Wiltern Theatre area idea thing is just not possible for me, I'd like to at least try to assemble some FAP more closer to the West Side area, or Westwood or wherever as a separate thing. (sorry Ned). Again, I will have no car access... in Los Angeles. So unfortunately, my options are limited, and I don't want to impose if possible.

As an incentive to FAP wit me, I will be bringing three homemade versions of the CDR700MB Go! 1978 Mix CD.. with full booklet containing pics, track listings, in a jewel case, printed design on CD, the whole package, to the FAP, so I can hand them out if there are enough people interested. (If Ben is coming, he gets one 'cuz he asked for one a while ago. Priority then goes to people born in '78. Then the rest of you will have to fight for the rest.)

Some of you have my number. If not, to not give much away, a good mnemonic for remember my number is "the process in which a ho is banked"... Only two of you will know what the hell I'm talking about. Let those two people redistribute my phone number as necessary so they can get in touch with me, as I have no idea how many internet cafes there are in L.A. for me to check ILX too often that day. (also, you can email me at d o n u t b i z i t c h @ h o t m a i l . c o m if worse comes to worse and ILX is down)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

stay away from Venus on Venice whatever you do. for your money, go to a Real Food. much better veg food.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Brian, here's the info you need:

http://www.mta.net/riding_metro/timetables/images/020-021.pdf

According to this, there is an all night bus that runs from the Wilshire/Western area to the end of the line in Santa Monica and back. Check the route map at the end of this document, as well as overall times.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Here are the two suggestions that were made above for the Wiltern area:

You should FAP at the HMS Bounty on Wilshire. 3357 Wilshire

the Brass Monkey is near the Wiltern! walking distance!

...any thoughts?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I second HMS Bounty. That place is pretty fun and has good food too. And old folks.

Also, Ned. I think I saw you at that Momus show. When I saw your picture on here, I thought you looked familiar. I think it was from there, as I believe I was sitting between Momus and Kimya for a good portion of the night. Anyhow, *stalker*

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Ned, the last stop outta Wilshire and Western is around 10:30pm, so it's not really an all night bus. :(

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

No it isn't Brian! Check again -- there's a separate late night schedule at the end of that document.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Why did they separate the late night part out? And goddamn PDF files! OK, I stand corrected. :( --> :)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they did that because it's the all night schedule for the whole week while there's a difference between weekday, Saturday and Sunday schedules. In any event, :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Now to see if there's a way i can connect to an all night Sunset Blvd. bus route, then all will be good.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Try this:

http://www.mta.net/riding_metro/timetables/images/207-357.pdf

It runs right up Western Ave. to connect with the 2/302.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

OK!

http://www.mta.net/riding_metro/system_map/images/wcla.pdf is exactly what i was looking for. Finally found it. Now to pray at least one Sunset route runs all night.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It does! 2/302.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bounty on Wednesday evening? I'm all over that. I love that place.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

We have a vote! Spencer and Arthur recommended? Sounds grand...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, off to the wilds of Santa Monica.. half fun, gaylords.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Vic should be there, so yay!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

My company is letting us out at 2:30, so I'll definitely be there on time!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. Peoples, I shall make an appearance, and perhaps if I dress formally, I will be able to win the prized 1978 CD-R...maybe I can entice the donut bitch by offering him a joy-ride to wherever he desires ? : )

Or perhaps i will dress as a chick in a $60 tank top so I can ask myself for a highball..time will tell.

Post-FAP FAP: we invade the spooky Ambassador complex...Spencer scales the flimsy chain fence with the help of Ned's strong locks, then tears it down for us..

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I have fears at this scenario!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

btw, the Bounty has cheap drinks!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

yo someone post a link to this on ILm, so we can invite Rob Geary to our FAPs..he doesnt see ile that much..or aim him, rgearyilx, i believe

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I might show up for that. The Bigfoot is not bad and since I'm coming back on the 5, it'll be on the way home.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool, I've heard it's pretty fun. Plus, Thomas Fehlmann of Kompakt!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i can make it!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Dntel!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

A Sunday? Alas, no chance for me I'm afraid. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the Bigfoot is interesting. It's a little trendy but the whole cabin / national forest thing is cute and the best part is the transsexuals. Don't ask me why transsexuals are choosing to frequent a forest themed bar. Either way, good times.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Trendy does not automatically mean bad. I mean if you always bucked trends, you might end up not doing anything...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind trends if you believe in it. Good things are often noticed by many people, but in LA it can be painfully clear who believes in certain things and who is just trying to be cool.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Very good fun. Hope everything continued in a fun vein after I had to leave!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 November 2003 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, the Wednesday team was : Spencer, Vic, Chris B., Ned, myself. Good FOOD & GROG. Several pictures were taken, who knows when they will surface (this is where Spencer and Chris B. have control of the elm). I slightly fear but am also excited. Was nice meeting Vic for the first time.. yay! No teddy bears were involved, sadly.

Spencer was especially cool enough to drop me off close enough to my house afterwards which was extra convenient and sweet, and in the car I got to hear the hot new jam from Triumph, the puppet dog from Conan O'Brien. "EEEEYYYE KEEEEED'A YOU! (Laughing Laughing Haw Haw)". Then i walked home just in time to watch an episode of The Golden Girls with my grandmother, which is her favorite show, aside from The Nanny.

Now I'm stuffed with Tofurkey, Guac, Hummus, and birthday cake (my b-day is just in a week or so). *URP* and watching two of the three house great danes play, fight, bark, and knock valuable shit over.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 28 November 2003 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

(um, control of the helm, although the concept of them being in control of the elm is very intriguing. DON'T WALK UNDER THE ELM TREES LEST YOU CROSS SPENCER OR BARRUS!)

Aah-aahhh, your hair is beautiful!! All of you!! Wish I could have been there.

What kind of camera is that again, Spencer? I want one.

Hurl Ives, Monday, 1 December 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm willing to bet the Bounty hasn't seen that much hair in, umm, ever.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Dean, the residents of the Gaylord apartments -- especially those who come downstairs holding a rubber ducky inside a big plastic flower to inexplicably stare intensely at the bar for two seconds and leave, which is exactly what occurred later in the evening -- are an interesting enough bunch such that the shocking long locks de Raggett sadly don't leave the lasting impression on the locale that they deserve.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 1 December 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm jealous.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 1 December 2003 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i didnt see these pics! yes its true: our LA faps are darker and seedier than all of you east coasters could ever imagine... and haha holding a rubber ducky inside a big plastic flower to inexplicably stare intensely at the bar for two seconds and leave, - don't forget the freak gaylord resident who walked around looking like he was searching for something on the floor and the creepy woman using a cane who didnt have to or did i just imagine all that. and donut bitch is cute!

Vic (Vic), Saturday, 13 December 2003 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does Barrus always look like he is meditating?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 13 December 2003 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Coz he is, he is pondering the fates. You would learn this yourself when you come and visit properly oh yes you will.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 December 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Will you wear that nice Cocteau Twins shirt for me?
