Have you invented words in your sleep?

Last night I had a dream that I was in a meeting, discussing an article I'd written, about a certain Latin American author. (Article and author exist only in this dream.) It was brought up that I had neglected to discuss this author's extensive writings on canned foods. Specifically, his important concept of "tunadolatry."

Tunadolatry!

It's excessive veneration of canned fish, I guess. I'm much cleverer when I'm unconscious.

Other examples of dream words?

I had a dream once that was a musical, and since I have no ostensible talent for music, I came to the conclusion that it is all there, I just need to tap into my subconscious. I was going to write the world's first under hypnosis opera, and then I got a quote from a hypnotist

last night part of my dream was in Russian, which I don't know, so yeah.

I talk in my sleep, apparently. The Bloke has a notebook filled with my wise sayings while sleep-talking, including such gems as "do you sell deep frozen doughnuts?", "if it's not blue, I don't want it", "it was really dark last night as I was driving home in the daytime" and my favourite, "stop kicking me with your elbow!"

Bedtime is never dull in our house.

last night i dreamt i was being interviewed by the Financial Times.
I told them to rebrand themselves as the Fatty and use that morrissey
song 'you're the one for me fatty' in their commercials.

it all made sense at the time.

voopunch. its a bird that flies at you and tries to send you to your death over cliffs.

This doesn't count, but the first night I spent with Sarah (before we were dating - I was sleeping on the spare mattress) I started speaking Italian in my sleep. Which makes a change, as I barely ever speak it while I'm awake. It was obviously my subconscious coming over all "Fish Called Wanda".

"Cogic" was written everywhere. On signs, on the streets. The next day I kept repeating it to myself. Then it occurred to me. I'd seen it occasionally as I type obits here at the paper. COGIC = Church of God in Christ. So I only thought I'd invented something cool.

I was somewhere, trying to get out of the particular hell-hole, but I had not accrued enough "Bunglan".

Currency? Gold coinage? Respect? who knows...

I dreamed that someone asked me who the author of the Madeleine books was, and I hesitated, then guessed, "Henri Delacourt," which in the dream was correct, but obviously in real life is wrong. But "Henri Delacourt"? Where the fuck did that come from?

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 16 November 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"Voopunch" is great. I'll try not to think of it before I go to sleep tonight.

"Prigliamel"--I used it to prove I could speak Italian. It worked, but I felt bad about it because I cheated.

nestmanso (nestmanso), Sunday, 16 November 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

jaymc, if you have seen "March or Die", a war film with Gene Hackman recently, one of the characters is called Henri DeLaCorte. Close enough?

I like 'The Bloke' as a chinstroking Yeatso-Freudian bogeyman, scribbling away in the dark ...
