I am Comforted by Shopping

to walk down the bright isles or merchandise...to hear the light pop...to consider what to buy...I am comforted by shopping. Grocery stores, department stores..its like they invited you into their house? Does it comfort you?

Yeah, there's a sort of comfort in buying things. For a start it's an excuse to talk to check out people. Also, things often look better in shops...so just hanging out in shopping centres is a way to pass time. Though, there is sometimes the come down where you realise you spent money on things you diddn't really need, and couldn't really afford.

shopping = better than not shopping.

sometimes it is comforting but when there is nothing i want it is very dull. as recreation, shopping is better than buying. my friends and i are going to try on expensive dresses today because we haven't in awhile.

But of course Maria is right, shopping is not just about buying things...it's much more than that.

I'm appalled by how comforted I am by shopping right now. I'm back at my parents' house for a very sad reason, and I should be taking long walks by the seashore or riding my Dad's bike down country roads, reflecting on my mortality, but today I went to the mall and every thrift shop within 30 miles and I felt so much happier.

It's mainly for the people-watching, I guess, as most of the merchandise is crappy and overpriced. I love to see how trendy/not trendy the kids are in my hometown. If I spot a pale teenage androgyne or obviously queeny kid, I'm in heaven. Today there were a bunch of Coast Guard cadets in full uniform walking around the mall-- they looked to be about 12 years old. I can't imagine them defending the coastline, but they sure looked cute. And there were lots of 30- something couples strolling through the colonial-era theme mall, Olde Mistick Village. Pleated acid-washed denim shorts are still popular with that crowd. The guy at the local indie record shop was super friendly--that was a surprise. But he had no idea if the Pulp album is being released in America. Does anybody know?

We ran around stores in long fake fur coats and short low-necked dresses today being floozies. It was great fun!

All I do is shop. Ask Wheeler how damn happy I was when he turned the car around and drove back to the Tanger Outlet Mall especially for me. That place is enormous! It has its own trolley system! I bought boots!
