We have to believe, don't we?
Does anyone think we won't do it? Why?

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yes. we'll smash them.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but we won't score a single try.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Like magic!

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

We will definitely win if we score a try. We only might win if we don't.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

we might score one.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there's a good chance we'ill absolutely squash them - 4 tries to none

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe the guarantee is Springbok training techniques! Oh wait...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

If the footage of that was released on DVD....

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys won't win whether you score a try or not. the only chance you'll get is if its raining in a slow annoying drizzly way.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

We can smell fear Gaz.....And you stink

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i say! this is a gentleman's game!

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

A gentlemen's game? No that's the other one - the one you always beat us in

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

which one? we beat you in everything but soccer!

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh-huh, which is why next saturday's gonna be so sweet. It'll be like the rebels overthrowing the Empire, or something. Good-will will break out amongst all nations, babies will smile, and flowers will spring from the earth, like at the end of South Park the Movie. And then that'll leave cricket and beach volleyball.....

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I really can't bear England to win this, sorry English ILXors, I thought I wouldn't mind but all the smugness is just too much. I HOPE ENGLAND LOSE HEAVILY. And I want a framed pic of Woodwards shiny fucking face when they do.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yay ronan is an honorary australian for the day

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

As someone on the radio said today, 'the English made the Australians the Irish of the south pacific'. (the article was about Pom-hating and how it was just payback for eons etc.)

Ed (dali), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

we smell aussie blood.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone said NZ would beat us easily in the finals, and they didn't. Ha! So just watcher backs guys. ;)

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

but NZ are not v experienced. we are :-)

its abt time we've had a bit of success. especially after all those beatings at cricket.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Irish of the South Pacific"? What you mean plucky under-dogs without a hope? I wouldn't have said that.
Anyway, racially speaking the Australians ARE the Irish of the South Pacific. Duh!

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

we smell aussie blood

*doomy piano, slow groaning handclaps [if you will]*

Are you Cockbain?
Are you Croft?
Are you all called Bruce?
Are you Grey?
Are you Paul?
Are you all Foster's drinkers?
We smell Aussie blood
Are you fracturing?
Are you torn at the seams?
Would you do anything?
Fleabitten motheaten?

Erm. *hides*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

In sport, as in music, the Poms invent it, then the Aussies beat them at it.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This explains why the Vines are so brilliant. OH WAIT.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

you better all hide from Johnny's boot.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The Vines are the exception that proves the rule.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Three words: Machine Gun Fellatio.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"In sport, as in music, the poms invent it, then the Aussies beat them at it"
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now i just hate myself for saying that.

Pete S, Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

which british band are the Vines copying now?

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

And what is Ned's stake in all this?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

And what is Ned's stake in all this?

None, really. I'm just bemused.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

How come Ned's even heard of Machine Gun Fellatio? That is really embarassing, I thought we'd quarantined them. Oh well, at least he hasn't heard of TISM.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

they've been getting some o/s press lately

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

How shockingly embarassing.

Pete, self-loathing is the lot of the Englishman, just as the celebration of mediocrity is the lot of the Australian. So fulfill your destiny, mate, cos we're fulfiulling ours.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Johnny's boot has destiny written all over it.

Pete S, Monday, 17 November 2003 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete, you're a natural sports commentator.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope they show HG and Roy after the final on ITV......

Pete S, Monday, 17 November 2003 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh well, at least he hasn't heard of TISM.

Haha! I've known about them for almost fifteen years now...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

roy & hg, tism...all our secrets are belong to you!

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned knows everything about crap Aust music - remember how he wanted a copy of Pig's Arse? It's like a weird perversion or something. Are you Canadian Ned?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you Canadian Ned?

I cannot be mistaken for such.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

good luck gaz.

Ned, please explain your fine-grained awareness of crap Aust music.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Reading random reviews of Andrew Mueller in the early nineties and actually visiting Melbourne last year and seeing billboards for Machine Gun Fellatio everywhere did not hurt. (I still want that CDR comp of whatever you fellers are planning.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you guys trying to turn this into the Pseudo Echo thread mk II or sommat? ;P

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

< /troughman>

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 22 November 2003 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

When we got up this morning it was 9-5 to England - I had to explain to rugby-hater mr ailsa that this meant that Australia had scored a try and that Jonny Wilkinson had done his stupid kicking a lot. This, I explained, is how rugby goes. Teams play well, get lots of possession, then Jonny Wilkinson kicks hundreds of points. That's how England win, I said. They don't score tries, I said, they just kick lots.

He's gone to work now, I'm going to have to come up with a theory about how they only score tries if they really really have to.

it's only the Rugby World Cup, it's not like anyone gives a shit. If the England football team were in a comparative position, or if Timmy was in the final at Wimbledon, there'd be nationwide hysteria by this point

Yes, but if they win it, prepare for a revision of the last few weeks' general meh-ness towards rugby as the English media suddenly realised their boys actually won something. Like when they got all excited about curling last year.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 22 November 2003 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(conveniently remembering that Scotland was part of Britain, like they had forgotten during the Alain Baxter debacle. He's Scottish, the curlers were British) *polishes chip on shoulder*

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 22 November 2003 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

its a faaackin classic! i hope i have beer to last! extra time!

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 22 November 2003 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

jeez this is painful.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Arse.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Gosh, that was quite exciting.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Blimey. That was far too tense for my poor old nerves.

Ricardo (RickyT), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

so the answer is yes.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i enjoyed that!

*falls over*

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't normally do this kind of thing:

IN YOUR FACE!

Pete S, Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah!

Now;back to bed.

Pete S, Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Alain Baxter was good on Superstars, though (and therefore British).

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, that's better, blimey, i don't fancy going through that again...

NB to all english sporting teams, get someone called cohen in, it seems to be the way forward...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Saturday, 22 November 2003 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

say what you like about the australian rugby team, but they certainly look like real australians. check out those faces! those haircuts! those names! these are some real hardcore aussies, just like they used to make 'em. look at Bill Young! Fantastic! look at his hair! Matt Rogers, best face in the world? the man looks like he's part of Fagin's artful crew of pickpockets, the crafty blighter. look at Larkham, glory in the australianess of his name, brandan cannon, now thats an aussie looking motherfucker, looks like russell crowe crossed with a bear! this team really restored my faith in the colonies, after it was shaken by new zealands team of hair gelled pretty boys, whats that all about kiwis? get some proper colonials, those guys look like they shower every day!

luke.::., Saturday, 22 November 2003 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I am 99 years old.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 November 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

oh my poor voice, my heart hasn't had time to recover yet.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 November 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, we were the better team and I'm glad we won.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 November 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, all told England deserved the victory, poor handling nearly cost us the match but the English players were just better all round. Every time Robinson got the ball he looked dangerous, Ben Cohen was unlucky with the service he received. I thought Australia were unlucky in the amount of time Stephen Larkham had to spend off, they looked a much more dangerous side with him playing.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 22 November 2003 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

poor handling, silly mistakes, that punch that gave australia the opportunity for their only try, and what with our only sporting success coming in on home soil in '66 i really thought australia were gonna win...but overall we spent far more time in their half.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 November 2003 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh absolutely, in fact if it weren't for two or three particularly egregious mistakes the game would have been over long before full time, which is always the thing when playing Australia at anything, if you don't put your chances away they're going to come right back at you, when that penalty went over in the last minute of normal time I really thought that was it, the momentum was with Australia. Which makes the win all the sweeter.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 22 November 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought another factor was the referee blaming England pretty much every time anything went wrong in the scrum. These things are horribly difficult to police, but given that England were pretty dominant there it seems unlikely that it was always them deliberately fucking it up. And if the ref had seen Johnson being pulled down in the line-out late in normal time, we wouldn't have needed extra time. Still, an exciting and earned victory in the end, so all that will be forgotten.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 22 November 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh come on England have a long history of being extremely dirty in the scrum, it's part of their success and that's not even to take anything away really.

It was a great match, nice to see Wilkinson get the winning score in the face of so much bile from the Australian media etc, I won't be watching any coverage and will be avoiding British news for a while.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 22 November 2003 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn't about being dirty at all, it was about pulling it down or forcing it up or twisting, none of which are things you want to do when you are well on top.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 22 November 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I've watched it about three times now, and it's still sinking in.
What a fantastic game. I said 'Jonny's boot had destiny written all over it' ....!! Magic.

gaz, get on this thread!

Pete S, Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yay!

It'll be the Ashes next!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ooo...england won! haha. its going to be a great day down here in australia!

suck it, sportsfans

katharine (katharine), Saturday, 22 November 2003 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

there was some sort of game last night?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 22 November 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I was particularly pleased it was a Wilkinson drop goal that won it - he'd missed a few kicks before that, which isn't like him, and if England lost I could imagine it haunting him for the rest of his life.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 23 November 2003 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

darwin proved right yet again!

zappi (joni), Sunday, 23 November 2003 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

well earned victory etc etc. i am slightly hungover.

Pete S, Sunday, 23 November 2003 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

it finished at 10.30pm here pete.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 23 November 2003 05:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Headline in the Mail on Sunday "God really is an Englishman". Makes you want to vomit (more than the MoS already would).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I take it that Jonny Wilkinson is an absolute shoe-in for Sports Personality of the Year, New Years Honours list, etc etc...

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Congratulations England. What a game of rubgy that was. For most of the game Australia looked to be one step behind the Poms and to challenge them right to the end was a credit to the Wallabies.

England have proven themselves to be the best side in World Rugby over the last few years and few Australians would begrudge England their well deserved triumph (well, except for our dictator LJH). The Wallabies were slaughtered in the line outs and your superboot gave the Poms the edge in the kicking stakes as Elton looked a little Flatley.

Thanks to all the English fans who came to the world cup and helped to fill it with colour and voice and enjoy the celebrations but be warned...we'll be back.

regards,

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Monday, 24 November 2003 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Soccer AM was great - which meant I missed the drop goal, but I did watch some of the final - best moment = lovely sliding tackle by an Australian which knocked the ball out of the way of a rampaging England player - Bobby Moore would have been proud of that one.

chris (chris), Monday, 24 November 2003 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow! Much tension, shouting and 'oh god I can't look' in the Shepherd's Bush flat where we rocked up early in the morning. It took about half an hour just to stop shaking afterwards.

robster (robster), Monday, 24 November 2003 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the football-style sliding tackle was by Matt Rogers, Chris.

I suspect that some Australians will begrudge England's victory, you know...
