What do you think your ILX persona is, and how does it relate to what you are like in real life?

For Nickalicious and Ally.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Come Saturday the ILXors I will meet will be quite surprised at how shy and quiet I am in real life.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say mine is pretty accurate although there is quite alot that I don't say for fear of insulting ppl & also not being arsed with it.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm pretty much me, though I am also pretty shy and less prone to actual violence in real life. A bit more poofy, though.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

crank, and it doesn't.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

got no persona
neither here nor in real life
man that kinda sucks.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually a middle-aged Korean woman who loves her job.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot more poofy.

I am an "insufferable cunt" on ILX. And IRL too.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

cept IRL you talk entirely in haiku... (double x-post)

Matt (Matt), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

pedantic and full of cant. on ilx i'm not so sure.

enrique (Enrique), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I've met a lot of ILXors. V. v. few of them have matched what I would've expected in my head from what they post online. In fact, I think I can safely say the only person who was what I expected was Ned Raggett.

note: not being "what I expected" is not a bad thing! Haha in some cases this is a "good thing"

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the fact that I need a long vacation from this place was clinched with that queer eye thread title--who the fuck knows what it was supposed to have meant.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I tend to talk faster than i think.

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, matos, I don't even know you.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know any more.

I've been through so many online and IRL personnas that I can't figure out any more which one is the real me.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ie, I think I come across as "twee" because Sarah and I talk about each other abnd our cats all the time, but I don't think I'm twee. Like I stated last week, I swear a lot, drink beer, listen to noisy abrasive music, etc. And now I have a tattoo, though it is kind of twee.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i'm pretty similar offline and my reflection online is true

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos - at least your name doesn't pop up in thread titles along with the words "zombie", "cum", and "guzzle"!

I think ILX makes me seem much mellower than I really am. There are many many witnesses to the fact that I am certainly not a mellow individual.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, don't leave Matos.

I am probably more argumentative on the board than I normally am but otherwise I can't think of too many big differences.

NA you don't come across as twee.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

IRL, I get ignored a lot more. Possibly because I sit quietly in a corner cursing my own deafness.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

When I met Nick and Sarah I expected them to be wearing matching angora sweaters and drinking tea and listening to Belle & Sebastian. But NA is actually the hardest man in the world!! I said "Hi nice to meet you" and he punched me in the gut! For laughs!

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm spontaneously funny IRL, whereas on ILX not so much because I'm a minor character at best.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the feeling that ppl's 'personae' online are closer to their inner lives than their realtime personalities.

typo acapulco (gcannon), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I embrace my online & irl tweeness!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea how I come off in real life, for real! I seriously wish I knew. I think I might be a lot meaner in real life.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

my online persona is tubbs but my everyday reality is crockett! wtf!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

(rjg, I'm confused by your post--I know you don't know me, and vice versa. why are you sorry?)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I come across as hairer and taller on ILX. I talk fanny in both worlds.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really know how I come across on ILX.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! I am almost cripplingly shy, thus my posts are more like a window to my brane than a sense of what it is like to encounter me in real life.

I'm also a good deal shorter and more English than my posts make me sound.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

God knows, you lot tell me. (I think I'm pretty much the same IRL)

Anna (Anna), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Nordic/adaml, I always thought you were tall.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna OTM. I don't think anyone can accurately judge *themselves* in terms of the disparity/likeness of their online and IRL personna.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I think Julio is the only ILXer I've met who might be shorter than me.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, this is kind of why I can't be bothered to answer this question, what Kate and Anna said, of course everyone's going to be like "Oh I come off like this" but what you think you are coming off as and what you actually come off as can be very different things! Like I said, I've met a lot of US ILXors now and just about none of them come off exactly the same--the funny thing is once you get to know them you start to twist their posts into their persona so that it all makes sense but the expectation on first meeting is the real shocker.

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a lot nicer on here than I am IRL, I find it easier being rude to people's faces than doing it online.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, people tend to judge "who you are" by how you behave at FAPs or other general meeting points. I know for a fact that how I behave in large groups of people is very different from how I behave in one-to-one situations. So even if you have "met" a poster, that doesn't mean you know what they're actually like.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

you'll all be lucky to get two words out of me at a FAP.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Roughly, what nordic said. I am stand-offish/rude/sarcastic out of shyness sometimes. Don't know what my persona really is here, but I am much less witty in real life ha.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

noone can ever truly 'know' anyone

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

hence: monogamy is a trap

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Things Ilx-ers have said about me (they may also be way off beam):

"Classy" (ha!, but thanks N.)
"Nice"
"You suck"
"Kind of like a Diet Suzy, or Suzy-lite"
"She can skin up"

"Anna: 'The world of men has ended'
[orcs cheer]
Anna: 'I bought a new hat!'
[orcs cheer more]"

"Considerate"
"You're a very good mimic"
"You write in a very sensual way. I will think of you as the girl who is always on ecstasy"

Anna (Anna), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I am still waiting for the day that Ally and I meet IRL and then the world will end in a giant explosion of matter and anti-matter.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I have Perry's Disease: I worry that my online persona is just a collection of quick dumb lines, no real substance. But interaction is interaction, so when I'm too busy to actually think and write about something (a bigger job for me than most), a few wisecracks is where it's at.

I think I'm better in person, though that's been on the blink a bit recently as well :)

I've met a lot of ILXors. V. v. few of them have matched what I would've expected in my head from what they post online.

Yeah, snap. Sometimes it feeds back, though. Like I was expecting some enormous Military Man when I met Millar, but he's nothing like that. And now I've met him and got an image of him (and stuff he cares about as well as knows about), that changes how I read posts by him.

xpost - what you said.

Also, there are certain combinations of people and subject where conversation can only take place IRL, as discussing it on ILX would be about as much fun as pounding nails into your dick.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna - I assume when you were called a Suzy-lite, you whipped out an axe and chopped them off at the knees? (er, no offense suzy)

Kate: Lara must also be present.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew F, you are very different IRL. Better, I think.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar and Ally were both a lot nicer IRL than I expected. Ally was similar to her ILX persona, but I didn't think I would get along with her.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I *will* get along with Ally, which is now worrying me.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I still think of Lara as a newbie. :-P Meeting Ally would be like a meeting of the 12 foot lizards, in terms of how long I've known of her and how long I still haven't met her in.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

In fact, I think I can safely say the only person who was what I expected was Ned Raggett.

I yam what I yam. < / Popeye >

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

What is the thing about ppl claiming themselves as shy (as I do IRL but make a concsious effort to dispel), when at FAPs and such they are at most somewhat reserved but otherwise fairly in the thick of things.

alcohol

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

More true than perhaps you realize, Jody.

Blame the Mai Tais at the Tonga Room, Leee.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Also-being an Englishman around Americans always makes me feel..I dunno, "reserved"? "dull"? Plus I always have to repeat myself when I ask for a glass of "water".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe you shouldn't use quotes when you say it.

you're right about not seeming English on-board. I didn't know you were until fairly recently.

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

waaaaaarrrr-tuh

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't imagine adam being 'dull'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that's very nice of you to say so. Especially after I had to assert that I may be taller than you upthread.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

well that's why i apparently insult everybody. to make up for the fact I'm short ;)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's interesting that all of the people I've met from the online world, in the real world have been pretty much dissimilar to what their online personas have shown them to be. I met this one woman whom I was convinced would be this polite and very genteel Suthuhn woman, but when I met her I found out she was loud and bawdy and passionate and hilarious. Another woman I thought who would be outgoing was actually a bit more quiet than I figured she'd be.

I have no idea how I come across online, but I've been told I'm quite nice IRL. I don't think I'd be as talkative as I might seem in person unless I was really comfortable with you. I tend to really feel awkward with people unless I know them really well, e.g. I've been chatting with them online for a rather long while or they happen to be relatives I've seen at numerous family gatherings. When I feel awkward, I don't dare even say more than just a few words, even though I do try to be as polite as possible to everyone I run across. But once I do feel comfortable with someone, I can be a bit on the outgoing side.

But that's just supposition and pure guessing. The most I've gotten from someone I've met from the online world has been that I've been "really nice". And I have no idea how I come across. I try to stick to as close to my "real" self as I can be, and perhaps my "real" me might not even come across as neurotic because when I'm out and actually doing things, I really don't think about the things that disturb me. I suppose I'll have to wait until next April to start to meet you guys so you can get a better picture of what I'm talking about.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

In reality, I am an agouti. I am typing this with my mouth. I can also fly. And shoot fire from my eyes.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

when yr not shaving yr eyelashes

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

good point, ally, i wasnt really responding to that as such, i was sort of speaking in general, partially because i had meant to say something very similar on an unrelated thread, but forgot.

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like everyone much more in person!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

So you hate us online?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha gareth's last post is exactly what I'm talking about, you are not half so like that in real life! Maybe you are but it is I who am confused. But sometimes you sound like a giant hippie on ILX! A hippie with guns and a Blythe doll.

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

He hates Blythe :( He would fine if only he loved Blythe.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I definitely like everyone much more in person. Either you are all very charming or I am just not that enamored of the computer.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't the foggiest, in regards to either question. They're probably not that different though.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Some people are better in person. Some people are not. But this is like all things really.

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I generally find a certain accountability and reaction in people's physical presences that pleases. But I suppose the absences would be even more unpleasant IRL, so Allzay OTM upon reflection.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I am far quieter and come across substantially as more intelligent (not difficult) IRL. however i still make as many crap "jokes".

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

felicity-after your "patting the forest" post one can only wonder. : P

xppost

kephm, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Petting, dear kephm, not "patting." A forest-petter I may be but I did not pat anyone's forest. Very very different.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

on ILX I'm the guy who tells you all how it fucking is and that you need to shape that shit up pronto and quit being such an irresponsible prat with your snooty judgements of everybody with more money than you.

IRL I'm the guy who buys everybody drinks and does glowstick routines with empty bottles until the bouncer throws me out.

TOMBOT, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Allyzay is totally OFF the money because she is, in fact, Prince.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

IRL, i'm ahmet zappa. or jim thome.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

In real life i can grope people

Garibaldi, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

really now -- i'm not much different IRL than i think that i am here. maybe a little more reserved and quiet (until i get to know folx).

to know me is ... to know me. and i do kinda look like dieter from sprockets.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I am loving the hell out of the phrase "patting the forest" and plan to use it in my own writing asap

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, I'm sorry, but that's a lie. You in fact DO have to be rich to be my girl.

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

are you gonna hip us all to the reason you're known as the playa of the yee-eear?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

btw I don't think I met anyone who was different from their ILX persona really. Just sometimes I didn't realize what a freak their ILX persona was.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

OBVIOUSLY IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH PATTING FELICITY'S FOREST, DUH!!!

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a really amusing xpost actually

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Miccio's last post is TROOF

TOMBOT, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

& NOW I GO HOME IN SHAME.

pattinghteforest, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

btw I don't think I met anyone who was different from their ILX persona really. Just sometimes I didn't realize what a freak their ILX persona was.

does this mean that you think that i look like Ian McCullough?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I still call them "the Ratpure" sometimes!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post)

Didn't I just read somewhere that you look like Deiter? You can't be both.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, you were about what I thought you'd be in person. I always knew you were a delightful combination of crazyman and gentleman. You were very nice to me when I was down there (I'm still living under the assumption that you didn't mean to crack my ribs and I hold no grudge against you). Only a couple of people that I met down there really surprised me.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

dieter mccullough.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

So you hate us online?

I should have said even more in person.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate us even more in person too.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

And Everyone Loves You.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Gareth is "in character" in his last post. Bad Charlton!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan's post totally wins this thread, except for that great Anthony post, "I always knew you'd be a great guy, except for that one time you broke my ribs, asshat"

Allyzay, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I'm just imagining Bryan keeled over, gasping "I hold no grudge against you...I hold no grudge!" Hey, I just remembered that Millar's been a great guy except for that time when he slapped me! And I can't even remember why he did! I think I said I didn't feel like dancing and he mistook it for me saying that the song playing wasn't danceable.

God what an asshat.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Last time I try to be sincere around this bitch!
