London ILX - Fancy A Match?

Mark C and I have discussed this on two or three occasions and then promptly forgotten to actually start a thread about it, but the Newcastle thread has just reminded me.

Anyway, several months ago Mark and I decided that he would get me down to Kingsmeadow to see the mighty Dons, and equally, we'd try and get a few people together for a Premiership fixture sometime in the next few months, at a London club that no one will have a huge ethical dilemma about going to see (so, Charlton then).

Anyone else up for this?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Saying "yes!" to this is obviously entirely unnecessary, but I'm going to do so anyway. It'd be ace if we could take a posse to watch AFC Wimbledon too, especially those of you who are curious as to why I bother to support such a lowly team.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Milton Keynes!

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

AFC Wimbledon have more fans on this board than pretty much every other team except Liverpool and Spurs.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I'd be up for seeing AFC-W!

*surprises self*

Sarah (starry), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds more interesting since I found out Harvey plays for you lot.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, come to Kingsmeadow and shout Milton Keynes, please. And when you do, make sure I'm watching.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

as an added bonus at kingsmeadow they let you in for free if you turn up after halftime.

ken c, Monday, 17 November 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Another thing that I was talking about on Saturdsay, was that I feel quite saddened for the players who are at MK, there's so much invective aimed at their direction, when let's face it, they're trying to earn a living.

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, the invective is hardly aimed *at all* at the players. It's aimed at the board, the backers, the FA and the "fans". There are a couple of players who we have problems with, such as that knackered old wifebeater Holdsworth, but even in our apoplexy we're able to see that the youngsters are just doing a job and have no control over where they play. Find a more deserving target for your sympathy.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The game this weekend in the FA Vase is going to be massive. The Vase is were we get really tested (we won our 27th League game on the bounce on Saturday). I'm expecting a massive crowd (3500+), a good game, and a great atmosphere.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Why aim invective at the "fans"? Some kid growing up in Milton Keynes suddenly has a local football team to go and watch. What do you suggest, he goes and support Arsenal or Man Utd instead?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone should hate Dean Holdsworth, yes.

And Barry, any invective aimed at MK is going to have some effect on the players surely?

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I find not hurling invective at a club you despise because you might hurt the players' feelings is a strange notion.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah.

Kid in MK - had a team to support called MK City. Went bust cos no-one watched em. So they nicked someone else's team. Bastards.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, it's hard to explain, but on the other thread about footie today, Barry has just said that he hopes MK goes tits up soon, in a way, yes, it would be a good thing in that franchising in footie is just plain wrong etc, byut then again, how many jobs will be lost, careers ruined etc if/when it does happen. Likewise with Notts County, they've got three weeks to come out of administration or it's curtains, now I hate Notts county but there's no way I want them to go bust.

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

G - how about (the now folded due to lack of support) Milton Keynes City? If the people of MK couldn't even keep a tiny club that belonged to them alive, then they don't deserve the right to steal someone else's. Or, if you prefer, *receive* the stolen goods.

Chris, what Matt says. They can get other jobs or they can enjoy their large salaries and put up with it. I uspect they'll all be looking for work soon, and if any of them want to try out for us I'd be delighted to welcome them.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

and give them a tenth (at best) of the wages, smaller expenses and all that. And what about other backroom staff?

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ultimately, Chris, football isn't there to pay players and backroom staff; they're a side effect of a club's existence. Also, what barry said.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

You could argue that the Franchise's loss will be some other club's gain... I'm sure that extra position in the Football League will go down very nicely in some parts.

How many staff actually relocated to MK with the club, incidentally, and how many are new employees? How many Wimbledon employees were made redundant as a result of the move?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, I admire your concern for your fellow man, but businesses go bust all the time, and WFC has been grossly and consitently mismanaged for a long time. Skills are skills - if a footballer wants to move or is made redundant, then they have to find another job in the same way accountants or scaffolders do.

Comparing Notts County, the oldest club in the world with a heritage to match, with the newest, most unsupported, most pointless, is borderline offensive. The fans of Notts County are doing everything in their power to support their beloved club (Dave?) - can you imagine the new fans of MK giving a flying fuck if they were actually asked to dig into their own pockets?

(Matt's point is interesting - potentially, Franchise's demise could lead to an extra promotion for several clubs all the way down the ladder. Imagine if Exter City finish 3rd in the conference this year and manage to achieve promotion because of FFC's failure?)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i've promised both j0e and barry that i will attend an AFC match soon - suggest away

also i'm in Manchester on the 13th of Dec and was wondering what the chances were of getting a ticket...and surviving

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and regarding WFC's possible demise, it'll be Glenda the tealady i'll shed a tear for - most of the league teams now have a coffee vendor instead

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

AFC Wimbledon game - unless people are okay with 5 days notice and want to come to what should be an incredibly closely fought and atmospheric FA Vase game on Saturday, I reckon we should settle for a game in the new year as we have very few home games until then. But Saturday will be ace, and I'm going regardless, so who's up for it?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You're making the assumption that all supporters are fully supportive of the ideology behind the club. If a ten year old kid wants to watch league football and (like 99% of ten years olds) doesn't give a monkeys about franchising etc, why should he be the target of invective?

Many people started supporting football teams for irrational reasons (they liked the colour of their shirts or it was the first game they went to etc). Good luck to AFC Wimbledon supporters. I admire your loyalty. But don't get self-righteous over it. Football fans come from all walks of life and support teams for all sorts of reasons.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Do ten year olds want to go and see a team they've never bothered with before who are at the bottom of the 1st division and not looking like moving from that spot? Or do they want to go and see Arsenal?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Telling a football fan not to be self-righteous? On a hiding to nothing there.

G, THEY STOLE OUR FOOTBALL CLUB. They took away the team I'd followed for TWENTY YEARS and left me with nothing. They gave our team to a town that couldn't even keep a non-league team up and running. They sold our team so that ASDA could build a new superstore (the real reason behind the various deals). And you're telling me I have no right to be upset?

If, somehow, Franchise survive and 15 years down the line have a genuine, enthusiastic fanbase built up over years of loyal support, then maybe they'll deserve a modicum of respect, if you can ignore their history. For now, though, they are a travesty, a terrible precedent, and their mere existence is a huge blight on the entire game.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping this thread would be about having an actual kickabout together. But also not hoping, because I live hundreds of miles away.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

we should do that as well, let's get mudded

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a verbal kickabout, a Penalty Shout Out. If you will.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay! An ILX kickabout! Jumpers for goalposts etc

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Rematch? Like any of you pansy ILXors would even turn up if it were a bit cold or wet. Sinister roolz etc.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Check out Big Hard Barry!

Tim (Tim), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

fear my nutmeg

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(just returning to my earlier point - I wish that the fans of AFCW could put the whole farrago behind them and devote all their energies to supporting their new club rather than hating the old one. I get sick of it all, it's boring, it's pointless and it does nothing to help move AFCW onwards. But that doesn't mean it's not justified.)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, somebody now has to pick an ILX XI, as it were. I'm upfront/just behind the strikers or you're stupid. I imagine Mark C would be the hardman stopper at the back, and Matt DC would be the legs in midfield. Ronan on the wing?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry plays for the other team.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(See how I was deadpan there? SEE!)

Sarah (starry), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick the very notion of putting me in any kind of XI is the most ridiuculous piece of unparallelled mentalism ever posted here.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna suggest Sinkah upfront.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

And Doomie in goal.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"Stop kicking the ball at me! Just because I like Felt! You're all cunts!"

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally would be Roy Keane.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"You think I care about you getting a shot past me? God, you're a cunt. I'm taking my ball and going home."

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Stick it up yer bollocks, you bald English cunt"

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll go full back then (right) but i'll need to play around 30 minutes in goal or i'll probably have an asthma attack

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

alternatively, because i love to keep the pass n' move system in full flow i'd actually fancy the keano position myself (eurgh, makes it sound like sex)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Better bagsy left back (in the changing room hoho) before anyone else gets there. Centre back'll do tho.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Bagsy fourth official. "Sit Down." "Please return to your technical area." "Sit Down." "Four minutes of extra time." "Sit Down." "Stop hitting me."

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

never thought i'd see 'bagsy' and 'fourth official' in the same sentence

incidentally, i was always last to be picked at school, apart from the fat kids

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, at least you got picked.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

why do we like football at all? it makes no sense

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Because it's fun. (Wish I could go.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Because it serves a substitute for actual emotional contact with other human beings, Steve.

(I always played right back, my game being greatly influenced by Claudio Gentile: the ball might get past me, the man might get past me, but never both. Or if he did, he'd have a broken shin)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't see the fuss really. Wimbledon FC haven't played in Wimbledon for, like, years?

do ilx people fancy actually playing footie then? it's winter and it's muddy outside, that's why indoor pitches exist. i'm sure there's still a few sinister folks about for a rematch...

ken c, Monday, 17 November 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

As I showed in the kickabout we had several months ago, I am too old and unfit to play in a match these days. Maybe in goal if you're desperate, but I'm not very tall. Used to be good too, back in the '70s...

haha, Mark C a hard man! As long as the opposition doesn't include anyone as big and tough as, say, Suzy.

I hope Wimbledon MK go bust too. I very much want this franchising idea to be strangled at birth, as a smaller evil than making it look like a winning idea.

I would feel wrong paying to watch some other football team. I plan to go to see Bristol Rovers' visit to Southend just before Xmas (assuming moving house isn't an issue around then), so if anyone else fancies Southend in December, I'd be delighted to have company. It's a Saturday at 3 game.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Back to this idea - just a reminder that I am going to Kingsmeadow on Saturday come waht may - it's too important a match to miss. So if anyone does want to come with me, please reply either here or to me via email. Hope some of you are up for it.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i may yet be going with j0e but unconfirmed - either way break a leg Barry

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah thanks Bazza but I'm off to Greater Manchester to watch my lot play, I think.

(If any of you fancy a trip to Stevenage a week on Saturday, mind...)

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Bump

(not that I'm desperate for company, like)

Stevem, will you get to go in the presidents' lounge? You lucky bastard.
