broadsheet 'must see' status

every few months you'll get a big splash in the observer etc listing what's 'hot' in the coming months. this can be tolerated, but as things are this boosterism infects more or less every piece in the paper -- it's mandated that you see 'love actually'; only absolute saddos will miss 'room on fire'; you literally are not eligible for citizenship if you don't read zoe heller's book.

recently i've stopped reading all but ilx (and books, obv) and i don't miss a thing. am i wrong or has heat magazine single-handedly transformed the print media?

ps conrad black -- aaaaaaaaaaaahahahahhahahahaha!!!!!!!

Just look carefully at what they're insisting is good. Scratch the surface and you might find some 'media partner' arrangement (someone at the Guardian, not just M. Lawson, clearly wants to tongue R. Curtis' nads).

Well, then answer N's and my question about your mysterious Gr1gs0n fixation of last year, Mark S!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone know jane grigson's maiden name?

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

haha fact-checking via ilx, the most dangerous sport known to man!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

What were you fact checking? Enquiring Gr1gs0ns want to know!

(Yesterday I got to witness the amazing sport of several Gr1gs0ns arguing about who was going to get to cook Xmas dinner. Yum yum!)

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

we ran a little feature on g.grigson in our "writers and thinkers" section

mark s (mark s), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i can xerox it if u like

mark s (mark s), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

They'll want a copy of that for The Grigson Archives, aka Our Spare Room. (Or rather those archives which haven't been sold wholesale to the University Of Texas, Posession-stylee.) So that would be ace!

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

(Sorry for derailing your thread, Enrique.)

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

that's okay. i might suggest to the moderator a category 'disgruntled freelancer'. not that i've ever submitted to the observer, but, y'know.
probably i'm being contrary but i'll deliberately not read monica ali/watch x hot film because of all the bollocks. which makes for wonderful conversations along 'have you seen 'goodbye lenin'?' 'no, but i really enjoyed seeing 'letter to brezhnev' last night' lines.
