Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Sarah had some friends that used to live there, it sounded fairly pleasant. The weather sounded good.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

It rhymes with "turkey"!

And it sounds funny if you say it in a Kermit The Frog voice.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Also-Rush Limbaugh is not from there.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know Albuquerque specifically, but New Mexico is a state of great natural beauty - so it's probably not a very long drive from Albuquerque to lots of nice places.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

my best friends are from there. amy linton from aislers set is from there. the shins are from there.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The view from the Sandia Peak Tramway is really astonishing.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, thank you fritz. i need to know more good things about this place, as it usually gets shat on.

great, spicy beef jerky that can even be found everywhere, even gas stations.

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

also, the food at Los Cuates kicks my ass.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Saying Allllllllllllbuuurrrrrquerqueeeeeeeeeee sounds great when your Neil Young.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I just had a (very weird) dream in which I was telling Neil Hagerty "Hey, we met in Albequerque" (we did).

I kinda liked the city, although I've hardly spent any time there.

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course, there's always the Balloon Festival, the city's (and the state's) biggest tourist draw.

Swamp coolers are awesome.

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

#15. The M&J Sanitary Tortilla Factory is an excellent place to eat.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The folks there seem really nice, from the brief time I stopped there. (though I have to give slightly more thumbs up to Santa Fe)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

santa fe is nice, but it's too touristy. gift shops and knick knacks.

Taos is another nice NM town...

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

ALWAYS MAKE A LEFT TURN THERE!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

you already made the looney tunes joke on ILM, horace.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

but this one is better and still in context!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

santa fe seems split between hippy artsy types and yuppy artsy types. I've had the best pizza I've had outside of Chicago there. Of course, the guy learned is pizza-making skills in Chicago.

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The balloon festival people are intense, it's a total cult (in a nice way).

The weather is beautiful during Fall, Winter and Spring: the elevation keeps things cooler when Arizona and SoCal are already scorching.

Petroglyph Monument is nearby, which is pretty cool (even if it does now overlook a really ugly housing development).

The Sandias are beautiful and if you're up there at dusk you can practically pet the coyotes.

Having a gravel yard means no mowing.

chester (synkro), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Even in summer when it's in the 100s, you can go into the mountains for relief. See also: Tucson.

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Route 66 is the most overrated thing ever; I-40 through NM and especially AZ is gorgeous.

chester (synkro), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

chester OTFM... Can't think of a better introduction to the southwest desert really. That's been my only experience in both states thus far (adding the detour to Santa Fe, Meteor Crater, and Grand Canyon)

And I know it's really cheesy and touristy but you MUST stop in Gallup, NM (on the very west edge of the state) just so you can take a picture of a route 666 sign. (Yes, 666, not 66)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I grew up on the stretch of 666 in arizona until those god-fearing bastards changed the name. :(

teeny (teeny), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god and go during chile season (septemberish) if you can.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

It's still 666 in Utah!

(though not Colorado)

chester (synkro), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The air is very dry, which I like. Also, I had a pretty good bagel there once.

Lee G (Lee G), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I did too! There's a NY-style bagel store tucked away in some shopping center, and I had a couple of breakfasts there. They actually got the "NY-style" thing down pretty well.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I love that Neil Young song. I also liked the part of Henry Reed's Journey when they were there and melted the swimming pool into the giant hole with enormous chunks of ice.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the shins?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the Partridge Family song "Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque", it's like Tony Romeo does Jimmy Webb.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

you be Kirky and I'll be Blake
nah, on second thoughts Albuquerque and Eubie Blake!

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

amy linton is from there.

Reviving because I need a New Mexico thread.

Anyone been to the Lightning Field? I've always wanted to go, but it's expensive and of course you need to time it when there's a storm going. On the plus side, I've heard it described as "sitting in the center of a Tesla coil".

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Filey Camp, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

I was born in Alburquerque. My favorite varety of Mexican food is DEFINITELY New Mexican food.

ian, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

Ian - nicely said. You've got to have some chili. I don't know why other states have abandoned that.

humansuit, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

xpost That's probably because it's so obviously better than all other kinds.

nabisco, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

I will be there tomorrow, and tomorrow is my 32nd birthday. What should I do/see?

admrl, Sunday, 30 May 2010 23:57 (fifteen years ago)

i have some good friends (NJ transplants) who live there. i will ask them if i can get in touch with them. obv. any ILX locals would trump whatever i may (or may not) have to say.

Aspergers Makes My Pee Smell Funny (Eisbaer), Sunday, 30 May 2010 23:58 (fifteen years ago)

six months pass...

Just got some green chile chicken stew (except this time it turned out to be red and green chile chicken stew) and it is fucking hot! I'm used to eating New Mexican food a lot now, but wow, this is kicking my ass. Good thing I ordered sapapillas to go with it.

bourgeoistech bourgeoisthèque (_Rudipherous_), Saturday, 11 December 2010 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

Actually that stew was kind of ridiculous, but it made me appreciate the sopapillas more.

bourgeoistech bourgeoisthèque (_Rudipherous_), Saturday, 11 December 2010 17:42 (fourteen years ago)

I will probably have my NM trip around my waistline for the rest of my life. :-/

One funny thing is that the hottest green I had was on the omelette in the airport concourse, the day I left.

pixel farmer, Saturday, 11 December 2010 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

This fresco project is pretty cool, not that I've actually been there yet (but it was only very recently unveiled):

That last post I made on 12/11 seems so long ago, but this month has been a blur for me.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 24 December 2010 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

I've been freezing my ass off here over the past few days.

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 2 January 2011 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

Really? We thought about coming out for New Year's, but couldn't get it together

puff pastry hangman (admrl), Sunday, 2 January 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

To me it's been fairly cold this winter, but a taxi driver said this is mild compared to the usual.

Here's some remarkably bad reporting on Yahoo! (something similar was in the WSJ online today):

the only apparent residence in the desolate neighborhood

Pay no attention to the new apartments or condos in the foreground of the photo running with the story.

Also, I've never heard anyone refer to any section of Albuquerque as its "skid row," nor does seemingly anyone else here commenting on this story online.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 13 January 2011 02:19 (fourteen years ago)

Has there been any noticeable Breaking Bad tourism in Albuquerque?

A brownish area with points (chap), Thursday, 13 January 2011 02:24 (fourteen years ago)

Not that I've noticed, but I wouldn't necessarily run into that.

You can get a house with a decent-sized yard for pretty cheap!
Lots of cool scientists nearby at Sandia National Labs!

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

My best friend is from there. She makes this awesome chile sauce and puts lard in everything she cooks.

emilys., Wednesday, 18 July 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

I miss living there. Eating there, most of all. The Frontier and its related drive-thru business Golden Pride. Satellite Coffee, coolest coffee theme park chain ever. Nowadays when the "breakfast burrito" is claimed as an available menu item throughout these United States, most of the creators of these sorry concoctions need a field trip here - or to San Diego for a different but equally superior approach.

ABQ looks crummy from a freeway but it's a swell town. A good quarter of my record collection and half my book collection was purchased dirt cheap there in the 90s.

Oh oh aa-aa-aaa-aa-aa-aa-al....buh-querque
