Can't say I'm surprised...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, I don't get this:

According to the findings, the more biased people are, the more their brain power is taxed by contact with someone of another race, as they struggle not to say or do anything offensive. The effect is so strong, the team found, that even a five-minute conversation with a black person left some of the white subjects unable to perform well on a test of cognitive ability.

would a racist care if they did something offensive?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

racism isn't always overt, so no.

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

or I mean yes? Oh just never mind me.

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get that IAT test either.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

There's something kind of unfortunate about the article, though, or the study, or the reality, or whatever. It said the effort a white person spends not trying to say something offensive taxes the brain. So if the white, and therefore racist, person makes the effort to try to avoid insulting someone, an action one would normally applaud, biology penalizes him. Sort of unfair. Does this mean that if the racist didn't bother trying to avoid offense, he'd do better on tests? It would of course be great if no one had any prejudices, but that's a bizarre concept itself. Far better for people to realize their preconceptions and deal with them and try to change them when they're wrong. I dunno, seems a bit pseudo-sciency to me.

Skottie, Monday, 17 November 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think "biased" neccessarily equals "racist".

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

and the names given are those more common for a black person, such as Tyrone.

With comments like this, it would seem the author of the article or the test creators are the racists, rather than the "well-meaning Dartmouth Undergrads". This article is creepy.

Skottie, Monday, 17 November 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, the conclusions of the study make some sense, but the article doesn't do a good job of explaining the methodology, so I can't really give any credence to the results.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree teeny, it could be that the test is actually sound and the results are interesting but that they have been described poorly by the author of the article. But since that's all we have to go on, it colors (poor choice of words?) the entire kit and kaboodle.

Skottie, Monday, 17 November 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay I googled a bit and here's a page that explains the test better, although it doesn't have anything to do with this study beyond being a similar test.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the methodology seems sound as described. test score for racial bias correllates to test score on cognitive test after dealing with a black individual. i mean, all it really 'proves' is that if you have something heavy on your mind you won't do well on a quiz a second later, but that's no headline (science journalism not too hot shockah)

typo acapulco (gcannon), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Tyrone is a cool name. More people, of every skin tone and denomination, should be named Tyrone.

Surely stupidity begets racism - which is why anti-racism campaigns are a bit daft. An anti-stupidity campaign would be more to the point, though it would also reveal why things like racism are so difficult to eradicate.

If you're talking about real education and discussion then I'd agree with you. If you're talking about politicians and celebrities wearing t-shirts and repeating slogans then I do find them pretty daft.

The original targets of the Ku Klux Klan were Republicans, both black and white, according to a new television program and book, which describe how the Democrats started the KKK and for decades harassed the GOP with lynchings and threats.

An estimated 3,446 blacks and 1,297 whites died at the end of KKK ropes from 1882 to 1964.

Gee.....why was that??

Dr. Rossiter preys on weakness and feelings of inferiority in the population by:

* creating and reinforcing perceptions of superiority
* satisfying adolescent claims to psychological control and mind-reading
* augmenting primitive feelings of being "secure" in his manhood
* rejecting the sovereignty of the liberal, subordinating him or her to the will of creepy his creepy father cult mentality.

People who are troubled that they can't access what is in their opponents' minds are disturbing.

Earlier this month, a contributor who goes by "isobel123," wrote that "the problem with adoption is, we really enjoy killing babies and would hate to have to miss out on that. We love squishing their little baby heads and watching their little baby brains come out their little baby eyesockets as their little chubby baby arms writhe helplessly in little chubby baby pain."

What a nice man:

The Upland City Council will hold a special meeting next week to demand the resignation of council member Ray Musser, whom colleagues say tarnished the city’s image by using racially insensitive language at a recent meeting.

Musser, 73, who attended the inauguration of President Obama, was relating his experiences to the council this week when he described the “non-whites in the crowd” as being “well-behaved, and that was so gratifying.” He was later quoted by a local newspaper using the term "colored" when referring to African Americans.

Musser said today that he doesn’t recall saying "colored" and conceded he could have described the inauguration scene better. He said the other council members were using the incident as a pretext for a political witch hunt -- especially the mayor, whom he has run against twice. “It’s much ado about nothing,” he said, adding that he won’t resign.
