Henry Reed, Etc.

This is the thread where we discuss the Henry Reed corpus: writer Keith Robertson and illustrator Robert McCloskey's quartet of books about a smart, entrepreneurial teenager in suburban New Jersey who starts a research firm (Henry Reed, Inc.), travels by car from San Francisco to N.J. (Henry Reed's Journey), babysits (Henry Reed's Babysitting Service), and becomes a rock promoter (Henry Reed's Big Show, the weakest and most dated of the series).

This thread will also enable discussion of Robertson's and McCloskey's other work. In particular, I'm trying to find the name of the short film (which I saw countless times in school) based on I think one of their stories about the doughnut machine that wouldn't turn off and stop making donuts.

(haha I probably used "corpus" wrong. haha I don't care.)

needless to say I was a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of the H. Reed books as a kid--they were the next step after Encyclopedia Brown for me. then I discovered nonfiction and comics in equal measure and that was sort of it for me as a Young Reader in the school-approved sense, but hey.

Jerseyites to thread, please! (that's you, Keith H.) did you read these books when you were young? is Grovers Corners a real place?

I'm pretty sure it's a real place, but I'm either unaware of or have blocked any memories of these books (the McCloskey part is interesting tho). My next step was Gordon Korman; maybe I'm really Canadian.

Yes! Hooray! I remember doing a book report on the first one. I only have scattered memories of things that happened. There was some weird contraption with a bird in a cage, right? And the bird got killed somehow? Then there was a part about divining, and he ended up with a mouthful of oil. And another about catching a fish with his bare hands. And dressing up as Native Americans. And feeding people horsemeat. Great...great stuff.
