Palomino is a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera in a beautiful sort of deep aqua color. It looks classier than it sounds. But Palomino is more Mom's vehicle than mine. I'm just driving it because I'm the only one in the household who drives.

And yes, I did happen to name these vehicles after song names, Orpheus after the David Sylvian song and Palomino after the Duran Duran song. Because I'm just that way, sweeties.

A 95 Ford Escort hatchback. It's a piece of shit and I can't wait to sell it. It's turquoise and has a spoiler. BUT it is a hatchback and back seats fold down so you can fit a ton of stuff (ie guitar amps) in the back.

CJ - what's service like on a BMW? Can most garages get parts etc to avoid you being ripped off by main dealers? I hate main dealers. I'm getting a new, well not *new* say 2-3 yrs old, car in the new year and I'm considering a BMW. Nothing mega flash - maybe a 316, 318.

Also on the shortlist - VW Passat or a Bora maybe. Anyone know anything about these good/bad/indifferent.

Right now I'm tooling around in a '98 Chevy extended cab truck, but I'm sick to fucking death of it, of the half-hour it takes to parallel park it, the way it guzzles gas like Barney Gumble guzzles beer, and especially sick of getting "dude, can you help me move?" phone calls every weekend. I have a 90 Volvo wagon sitting in my driveway which I am working on currently, hopefully to be mobile before January. Rock.

I drive a version of this (a 1988 Acura Integra) in gold.

It's holding up surprisingly well, and it did astonishingly well in last year's snow storms. But I'm hoping to get a certified preowned Toyota some time this year.

The only cars I like right now on aesthetic grounds are Jaguars (but they're just Fords in pricy shells!) and Mini Coopers.

i just bought an acura tsx, which is the japanese/european honda accord. (smaller than the buick-sized accords sold here in god's country.) it's very plush, gets lousy mileage, and i love it. it's "meteor silver" which is kind of an ice blue. very easy to look at. how did i ever survive without heated seats, dual climate control, and a six-cd changer in the dash?

I'm sick of throwing all my spare money into running a car, so I'm taking a year off. If I need to get somewhere off public transport, or something like that, I'll hire a car, it'll be cheaper than pwning one.

Possibly thinking abt getting some old piece that I can fix myself when it goes wrong (which it will) late this year or early next year - shortlist = Wolseley 1500, Singer Vogue or Gazelle, Sunbeam Rapier or Alpine. We shall see.
