TS:Quizno's vs Subway

I don't know. Quizno's has a soup deal n' all, but a lousy name and ?uestion mark motif. Subway has Jared (who some friends of mine know-they say he is a rich asshole! always was!).

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

both, please.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's is an awesome name!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the Scottish equivalent RJG? Ikea?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's is a silly, silly name. It sounds like a nickname for someone who always has their "nose" buried in "quiz" books n such.

Subway sounds punk.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been to america but we have subways in scotland. they're trying to rebrand the glasgow underground, actually.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

don't ever go to subways next to gas stations. maybe next to subways would be a different story.

youn, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Glagow Underground" sounds like some kind of citizen's militia.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I poop too much.

Labia, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

is this question some kind of sick joke?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

someone actually tried to tell me that they call it 'the metro'.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

is this question some kind of sick joke?

The one I'm asking or the one you're asking?

Everything's a sick joke with me.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@m, there are many excellent delis in your hood, don't neglect them!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

quizno's is ass. The sandwiches are gross and messy and I always feel nasty after I eat them.

Subway's boring but tolerable. especially if you get jalapenos on your sandwiches.

we don't have delis in texas.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the "hood" I live in, gygax, or the one I work in?

I've got a weird affection for Market St. Is that bad?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

But now I see - this is some kind of rockist sandwich thing, right? ;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The worst deli I have ever been to is University Ave in B-Town.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time I walk past a Subway, it smells like rotten iceberg lettuce. I've come to associate that smell with the place and it always makes me sick.

Quiznos is okay.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

sandwiches are one of the few areas i am totally rockist about

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost x 3)

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

does iceberg lettuce have a smell?

I am rockist about salsa. Anyone who eats Pace should be shot.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i have a feeling those who live in the mid-atlantic should not bother answering this thread

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

does iceberg lettuce have a smell?

it does when it rots!

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i want a sandwich

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you know that gluten is practically indigestible?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll never eat subway again after seeing a dateline special on health regulations. mice turds hanging out in the meat holders.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i'll never eat at subway for a lot of reasons but after hearing all of the horror stories from when ethan worked there, especially.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i just ate a salmon salad sandwich from the cafeteria.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i've sworn off fast food joints since sunday night. my fat gut will love me.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's looks like it should be good but their sandwiches were gross every time I tried to eat them. I ate Subway almost every day for a year and a half when I worked in Brisbane and grew numb to it. They would actually make them well if they knew you. But I haven't had one since I stopped working there.

The best sandwich shop around you Adam is Specialty's, ask someone where one is. There's one on Mission and 1st or something.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Subway. It's cheaper than Quizno's by far (12" veggie sandwich + a bag pretzels < $5.00), and seems healthier in the way that unmelted cheese seems healthier than melted cheese, even though there is actually no difference! I only eat there occasionally because it's a block away from where I work, though. Otherwise, I never eat at fast-food chains. (Taquerias and falafel joints, on the other hand...)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

c/d: not eating "fast food" while eating at local quick crap joints

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah Kyle, I've actually gotten to be quite friendly with the eastern Europeans who work at the Subway where I eat. Whenever my beard gets too bushy, the Russian woman who runs the place chuckles and calls me "Karl Marx."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

They are both dumb. A new Subway opened down the street from my work and I went there a few times until I felt gross thinking about it. It doesn't help that if you are a vegetarian, you've got two options: the veggie sandwich (also known as the rotten iceburg lettuce sandwich) or the VEGGIEMAX (TM) sandwich, which is essentially a veggie burger in a sub roll, and is kind of good, but they never microwave it long enough so it's always cold in the middle and grosses you out. Blergh. It hurts my guts just to think about it.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

do they have computers in the mid-atlantic?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The idea of a fast food chain that makes deli sandwiches baffles me. Delis already do make "fast food."

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

we make it ffffffaster!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

There aren't always delis around though.

(xpost again!)

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

NA: Hmmm. They call that VEGGIEMAX sandwich the "Garden Patty" in Chicago. I never get it. After they microwave it, it's really oily. And it's oddly spicy. And it's a dollar more than the regular veggie sandwich. (Yeah, I'm cheap.)

Re: "rotting iceberg lettuce sandwich": The cute Bulgarian woman knows to stuff my veggie sub with tomatoes, cucumbers, and green peppers.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, what Jody said! If there was a deli around here, I'd go there all the time!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

There aren't always delis around though.

Like, Subway is a popular fixture at highway rest stops, in places where that's really the best (only?) store-bought deli sandwich around for a hundred miles.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

jimmy johns, or Potbelly ones

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's wins out even though their stuff's a bit more expensive and they use the whole "toasted" thing as a main selling point.

I hate the whole "what do you want on that?" thing that they have going on at Subway where you're expected to choose between a combination of 15 different toppings for your order.

Uhm..

Like c'mon. You're the f'ing "sandwich artist." Put whatever you think works best on there. If I'm going to get a rotten sandwich I want it to be your fault, not mine. What do I know about this stuff, anyway? I don't make freaking sandwiches for a living so just go town with it.

Even with that stupid outfit, I trust you with my sandwich options. Screw the whole democratic process and just force me to eat what you think I need, dammit!

may pang (maypang), Thursday, 11 December 2003 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm kind of agreeing with this right now because my own sandwich making skills have lead me to eat a sandwich consisting of potato bread, tons of sliced jalepenos, and hot sauce tonight and quite frankly I feel neither clever nor big for choosing exactly what I wanted on my sandwich.

Allyzay, Thursday, 11 December 2003 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The best local chain though is CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Awesome subs.

-- Jordan (jordancohe...), November 18th, 2003 1:06 PM.

I'd forgotten about this place! They're pretty good, but I think they put too much lettuce on their subs sometimes. Jimmy John's is better for ingredient distribution.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 11 December 2003 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
I am turning into Jared. I have also mastered the art of ordering 6 sandwiches at a time since I have been turned into lunch gopher amongst the work group (this should change soon as we will no longer be at this location).

Subway's prices for 12" sandwiches cannot be beat. Seriously it's a massive amount of food and you pay like $7 tops, I wish they had had a subway near my last job, oh well.

For cold subs I find that the BMT and the Seafood are about neck-and-neck depending on what I want that day. I could probably eat either one daily for about 6 months and not bitch about it.

Among the hot subs I find the Subway Melt wins out easy, especially with lots of jalapenos and olives and horseradish sauce. My post-lunch breath is of no concern obviously.

the Chicken Pizziola is pretty disappointing since they use that same "marinara" sauce that goes on everything else, too sweet for my tastes and they microwave the whole sandwich at once which causes soggy bun (No. 1 reason I utterly hate Quizno's).

The SW Cheesesteak is kind of rub after a couple more tries, the chipotle sauce is weak after trying the Dijon Horseradish Melt just once.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Also note that all of their prices with tax included total out to flat dollar amounts? I am impressed by this and wonder why more dining establishments don't do this, I mean WTF with all these damn pennies you are trying to hand me, stupid whore, I don't need any of your fucking pennies, my desk at home is covered with them and I have a plastic cup in my car that's overflowing already, fuck you!

TOMBOT, Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's toasty subs are the bomb, especially the turkey/bacon/guacomole, a surprisingly great combination.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom I'm guessing it's because local taxes vary and most national chains can't be bothered to adjust their pricing schemes to each locale. But then that means that all local, non-national stores SHOULD do their pricing that way and are simply twunts for not.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone tried the new "Atkins Friendly" wrap? I was going to try it, but they only do six inch, and I'd have to buy two!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's largely because most places still obey the "everything ends with .99" instinct as opposed to the more rational science of "we are not going to bother with any fucking goddamned pennies or nickels ok."

TOMBOT, Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

True, which is stupid cause they could have stuff be, say, $3.93 or whatever, having it come out $4 even and still benefit from the 'hey look it's under 4 bucks' illusion.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I looked at the wraps, Spencer, and then I looked at the italian herbs and cheese bread, and the parmesan oregano bread, and I said to myself, I want a foot of that bread, I have no time for this atkins crap.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a whole bunch of Subway gift certificates for X-Mas!! It's all I can do to not go eat it every day now.

Yeah, the price can't be beat, but mine doesn't do the round number thing. A foot-long Veggie Delight is $3.83. My solution (anytime I leave the house for anything) is to always bring at least 4 pennies with me. I still have tons of the bastards though.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

foot long veggie = 3.83?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup!

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Believe me, I've got that shit memorized. Also, do you guys do the stamp thing?

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

We have no 'stamp thing' out here. Haha I once ordered the veggie delight instead of the veggie patty for one of my coworkers. She was quite unhappy. I would have been too.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, "salad sandwich" isn't boring & gross because the like, 4 slices of coldcuts they put on add $1 minimum to the price, and I make them load it up with so many hot & banana peppers and giardiniera that I would never taste the meat anyway (btw, I am NOT a vegetarian).

"stamp thing" = you get 1 stamp for a 6 inch, 2 stamps for a foot-long. Collect 8 stamps and you get a 'free' 6 inch with the purchase of a medium drink.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I ate at Quiznos my first day in Chicago (not my choice) and it kicked Subway's ass. It actually tasted like food for one thing.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved Quizno's the first 5 times i had it, then I somehow became ultra-aware of its low-quality ingredients. Haven't eaten there for years.

That's me from upthread, Nick.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I don't plan to eat there a lot. Plus, I'm vegetarian, so there's only like two sandwiches I can eat. But I like that they offer a grilled cheese sandwich in addition to the standard "let's just cram all of our vegetables in there" sandwich that Subway has too. Subway has the Veggie Max/Veggie Pattie sandwich, but they never heat it long enough and it's always still cold in the middle. Just thinking about it makes me vomit a little.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

This makes me miss the sammich place I used to work for that had a veggie sammich where we melted 4 kinds of cheese with an asston of slivered almonds up in that shit and then put all the veggies and shit in. Thems was good. And surprisingly popular.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

They are both gross but edible. The meatball at Subway is nasty but good. Quizno's acts like it's better quality, but it really is shit if you examine it. Subways stink and Quizno's has better specials. But Subway has better cookies.

Star Hustler, Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a Quizno's on the block next to me now. And I got a $2.00 off coupon in the mail. I"m still scared to go though.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the subway veggie patties scare the hell out of me. they look wrong. a subway just opened up a few doors down form my apt. i was there last saturday at 10am in my parka and slippers. other than fresh vegetables i prefer the local sub shops with the dusty old arcade games in the corner

kephm, Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

they microwave the whole sandwich at once which causes soggy bun (No. 1 reason I utterly hate Quizno's).

All the Quizno's around here have a little conveyor belt oven thing for sandwiches. That's what makes them better than Subway. (No matter how bad Subway gets, I don't understand why anyone would rather have a McGreasyShit than a sandwich.)

I'm digging Schlotzky's new Angus Steak and Provolone sandwich.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Go to quiznos.com and your day will be made (or you may think the world is ending). If it's already been discussed I'm sorry. I think the sub battle may be over.

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 7 February 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's toasts their buns and they have soup. They win. The folks at Subway are always asking difficult questions like, "what would you like on that?" Just shut up and make the damned sandwich.

And I prefer the man suckling on his wolf-mother's teet to anything "Jared" has ever done.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Saturday, 7 February 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Togo's

Aja (aja), Saturday, 7 February 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, the meatball sammich is U&K in my hoagie/sub patronage. Here's my heirarchy:

1) Davanni's. Local Twin Cities chain; best bread ever and both their meatball and turkey sandwiches slay six ways from Sunday; they use this super-buttery garlic bread for the sandwiches that is just murderous. Not too costly, either. More of a pizza/hoagie place so they might not really count.

2) Jimmy John's. Corny decor, but they deliver. The Beach Club is my #1 vice as far as that place goes. Guacamole + Turkey = Nate is Happy.

3) Subway. Mostly nostalgic reasons, as I'd go there before/after seeing a movie at the two-screen super-old-skool Grandview theater right down the block. Again, good mostly for their meatball sandwiches.

4) Quizno's. Went there once during my 45-minute work break. Bread was OK, but the meatballs were half-cooked and kinda cold, and I didn't like the sauce too much -- too much seasoning, not enough tomatoness/meatiness. Seemed a bit gloopy. But it's the only actual restaurant within a reasonable distance of the office building I work (I have an afternoon/evening shift and therefore cannot take advantage of the office cafeteria; vending machines offer little more than Pop-Tarts for sustenance; I hate brown-bagging due to super-limited refrigerator space) so I guess I'm stuck.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 7 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

(big prob. with Davanni's: their circle of delivery influence does not extend to my apartment. BOO TO THAT.)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 7 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Bryan I hadn't seen it. And I thank you.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually ate Quizno's for lunch today. Man, that place is expensive.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 8 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't even have lunch. I'm so hungry

Aja (aja), Sunday, 8 February 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

As controversial as this may be, I had no problems with the guy at Blimpie, ever. Why aren't we bringing them into the mix (b/c let's face it, Blimpie is just as assy a name for a sub franchise as Quizno's, really...)

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 8 February 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

When I want a toasted sandwich, I go to this little whole in the wall Chinese place on the west side of Kearny between Sac. and Commercial. It's cheap and they're charming. Subway's bread is so wrong, it's a crime. Quiznos is OK but I am not going to walk that far to go to a chain restaurant and wait in line.
