U2 guitarist The Edge said: "When we named it, I always knew it would be number one at something."

Editor-in-chief of the Q special edition, Paul Trynka, said of the winner: "I think people voted for this because it's a classic that still feels fresh."

"It's a great tune but despite being over ten years old we haven't had time to get bored of it," he said.

Experts don't get that way by accident, you know.

I hate stupid lists. "One" isn't even a song that comes to mind when thinking about U2. Not that I think about U2.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It's one of my favorite of their songs ever, at least. That still makes it sub-Ween at best.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently they didn't listen to the Tenacious D album. Because the greatest song in the world was already crowned.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The most modern song in the top 10 was Destiny's Child 2000 hit Independent Woman (Part One) at eight, followed by Eminem's My Name Is, which reached number one in the UK in 1999.

When Eminem is mentioned in the same squeak as the Beatles and John Lennon, then you know Armageddon is near.

(Ned, check usual spot, as I sent you an email yesterday)

FUCK ANY ALL TIME LIST THAT INCLUDES SHIT FROM THE LAST 5-10 YEARS

still, "10. Ike and Tina Turner - River Deep Mountain High ", hell yeah for token great songs!

"Lasting" is at best an unfortunate side-effect of a pop song being good.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

meanwhile....

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get Nirvana being on the tops of any list. Thats just my opinion though. And Nicole is OTM about Eminem.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do the British seemingly hate Q magazine?

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"Lasting" is at best an unfortunate side-effect of a pop song being good.

Wait long enough, and that "good pop song" deteriorates fast into overplayed bullshit. Unfortunate symptom, but true.

'Q' is shitter than any other music mag. Written by cunty little wankers who wouldn't know music if it shat on their head.

No music mag is perfect but some fusion of Mojo and Uncut would probably be ideal. Incorporating Gramophone, as well.

Wrong. Tis still better than NME, and you get some worthwhile pop shots. Many of those 'wankers' actually eat, breathe and dream of music....though you couldn't tell be looking at their paycheck!

VICTORY IS MINE

Idiot Steve.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

U2 is proper music with real melodies, not like moronic Busted

Hairy Gringo (blueski), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Every U2 song sounds like one of those headaches where you start levitating slightly

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

disreguard all such polls ,people. For God's sake, Desity's Child is in the top ten. Besides, the best song ever recourded is clearly "Beautiful Boy" by John Lennon.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ewww I hate "one"!
