"I don't think London bears any resemblance to England...If England didn't have London, it'd be a f-king dump." Hanif Kureishi

Considering what an exaggeration this is, its surpisingly true...

Bob Six (bobbysix), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-but Norwich!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

but nothing!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

after bush's private squadron of f-111s have had their fun you're going to have to get used to it.

hanif has never lived outside the london area, btw.

enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i agree with him, with the exception of the entire north of england

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

and possibly bristol

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

hanif has never lived outside the london area, btw.

He grew up in Bromley, didn't he? London my arse.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Well his recent movie The Mother is set almost exclusively in Notting Hill and I found the setting insufferable (the film was interesting, best Yuppie Horror movie in years).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it's on the 'outskirts' isn't it?

enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

London is completely different to the rest of Britain = OTM.
Everything in Britain which isn't London is a shitehole = nonsense, clearly.

Also, 95% of generic UK town centres are exactly the same as Bromley, so god knows what he's banging on about.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

oh get over yourselves londoners, you aren't that different. most ppl in 'london' seem hardly to move from their own areas.

enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

if you live somewhere as brilliant as hackney, why on earth would you want to go anywhere else?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

That's why there's no tube station.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

London is much better than the other two places I've lived.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

there used to be a tube station in hackney but one day we filled it in, larfing non-stop the while

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

London is much better than the few other places I've lived too.

Enrique's "most ppl in 'london' seem hardly to move from their own areas" is one of the most baffling comments I've read on the board in a while.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Enrique's "most ppl in 'london' seem hardly to move from their own areas" is one of the most baffling comments I've read on the board in a while.

i'm not really talking about the bright young professionals who inhabit this board, to be fair.

enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

It's still baffling.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

No, enrique, you're talking about me :(

(East Putney - Southfields - West Putney)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Some kid stole Hackney tube station and sold it for crack.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Some kids sold Kilburn Tube Station and sold it for the craic.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hanif was at Exeter university the other week to give a lecture; I wish I'd gone and quizzed him on this.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never left Walford and PROUD!

(Praaaaaahd, sorry).

Ms P. Fowler To You (starry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do the Eastenders always get cabs when they go up west? I thought they were horny handed sons and duaghter of toil, yet they're only in zone 4 ferchrisakes. No wonder they live in grinding poverty with such extravagant travel habits.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Being in the pub every day and night also contributes, I feel.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Some sections of the media do have a tendency to be Londoncentric. The local news is often just a repeat of what was on the national news at six.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

THEY ARE OURS BY RIGHT!

inauthentic pearly king s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

bring on the ambling horses!

they only shoot their own s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, that almost turned me into james whale -- um -- what the fuck?

enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"Originally all Hackney cabs had to be able to accommodate a man wearing a top hat."

!!!!!!!!!!!!! (mark s), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

And carry a bale of hay, remember.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I assumed Charlie (being local cab driver) always let them do journeys "on the house" as it were - and then when he lost his cab managed to "cut a deal" for the residents of Albert Sq. And Phil probably owns taxis that venture into E* postcodes anyway.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Good point well made. That'll be the community spiritedness of yer cockernee sparrers at work.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Londoncentrism is a heart thing.

ken c, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

London would be brilliant if it wasn't full of people telling me I don't live in London when I actually do

DG (D_To_The_G), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

DG (D_To_The_G), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Zone 4 for Eastenders, Dave? Impossible! If you're out east and in Zone 4, you're in Essex.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Not quite true Martin, in Walthamstow, especially towards the north circular, the bus routes are in Zone 4. But it's probably only a tiny sliver that isn't quite Essex. But I suppose that's NE, and not exactly Eastenders territory. Although they did take the first part of Walford from Walthamstow, apparently..

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 20 November 2003 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

SW16 - bleak barely-London outpost of nowhere and nothingness.
NW3 - back to the world hahah!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend went to the Eastenders set and went to Walford East. They have a line chart on the platform and it's a normal district line map except they've swapped Upney for Walfrod East. Which is in Zone 4, and I win.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Boyler you made that up.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

why would they bother with that level of detail when the map would never be scrutinised close up in the show?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

eastenders is not set in the east end

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

eastenders is set across the road from the big brother house.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, i felt a top theory coming on then, but it's gone

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

why r jade and the major not in eastenders yet?

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

that'll teach the bbc to pass on the option!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

DG has just become our nearest neighbour on ILx I believe

chris (chris), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim - L0u1s Barfe told me, so it must be true.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Breaking news - It's actually on the boundary between Zones 2 and 3. I lose the battle, but ultimately, win the war.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the word "actually" groans under the pressure

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually already gave up the ghost a month ago when it realised it was part of the name of the Ultimate Romantic Comedy.

Ultimate hoisted its white flag when it was used in the subtitle to Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie.

White Flag is a little bit miffed that Dido used it as a single name, but since the single wasn't as bad as it thought it is still soldiering on.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

PUNgent

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)
