Unix/Linux Books - Which to Get?

Interested in learning about UNIX/Linux and I would like to buy a book or two to start. I have practically no programming skills whatsoever, and my only experience computer-wise has been with Windows from 3.1 up and Macs from OS 9 up.

But I'm willing to learn, and I try to stay up on general tech - what's a good book to start with (ie something not written for those who are already engineers and/or programmers)?

Might be a good start. I know not of any books having been forced to learn the hard way ("Whadda you mean there is no dir command?!?!")

Hmm...I'll definitely give it a run-through, but I kinda need that physical real-world feeling. Something with an index that I can quickly reference. Decently in depth, but not necessarily (probably necessarily NOT, in fact) a completely comprehensive tome upon the complete unabridged uses and functions of and with *nix.

You can't really ever go wrong with the O'Reilly books. I haven't read the one I've linked to in particular, but I own about 5 of their UNIX/Linux oriented books and they're all outstanding.

One book that's been indispensable to me is O'Reilly's UNIX Power Tools

O'Reilly all the way. Their website is also full of invaluable articles.
