Blog Voice vs ILX Voice

When you find the blog of an ILXer or a blogger you read turns up here, how often are you suprised by the difference?

Biggest shock (and the cause of this thread) was seeing Dave Stelfox's World of Stelfox appear in the Guardian list of bloggers, because I'd not been particularly struck by anything he wrote on ILE(er, no offense) and in fact mostly rememebered him from MSN to close its chatrooms . But his music blog is completely brilliant! It seems (on skimming) to be more introspective, I guess.

Least difference (but still a surprise) is that ILX Starry = Brane Starry = real life Starry.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, that's the list from http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/features/story/0,11710,1088368,00.html

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

*feels ashamed for not blogging in years*

I blame the fact I'm a Gemini.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Grrr, Argh, etc.

I'm just going to start talking about gardening instead...

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

How is work progressing on that <no-kate> tag which ensures that you never see a given thread?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Oi!

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

What? It's win-win!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

But if I filtered out everything on ILE that annoyed me, there would be, like 3 threads left. All started by me, or maybe Ed.

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't see why someone uninterested in blogs even bothers to post to threads about blogs.

and, with all due respect, it is ill behoven for someone who starts a numerous threads on subjects such as horny historians, mayor crunky, etc., to complain about self-congratulatory circle jerks or a limited number of people celebrating each other.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Like said on some ILM thread, the "classic or dud" nature of ILX guarantees that some people will pop up and groan "dud" on any given subject. If your blog is your life, then of course you'll be offended by this tack.

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't have a prob with the blogosphere in itself, but more with the guardian.
sorry, that's 'with the guardian's lazy-ass tendency to boost over and over the same blogs, many of which are by pro-journos'.

enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on Kate ignore the b-word and it's an interesting question! Someone who does a lot of things online will have a lot of written 'voices', and it's intriguing to see where the similarities and differences lie.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't have a prob with the blogosphere in itself, but more with the guardian.

I'd agree with that statement. I find it quite easy to ignore the blogosphear, but The Guardian and self congratulation go together like bullets and guns.

Come on Kate ignore the b-word and it's an interesting question!

How is that much different from the "how different are you IRL to on ILX" questions lately?

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Because IRL vs computer is apples and oranges; on the whole quite similar but different enough.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Cos spoken and written personae differing is different from written and written personae differing. I have the same detachment from my readers on ILX and on NYLPM, and pretty much the same readers - why do I write differently? It's interesting cos it gets at the way some people (me included) become more formal when we write on a blog not a forum - there's loads of people who are really fluent here and then freeze up horribly when I suggest they do stuff for one of the FT blogs, for instance.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i.e. it's getting at how people have this residual idea of Writing as opposed to 'mere' communication.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

enrique, whether they're conscious of this or not, it's in old-media's interest to present nu-media as an unthreatening adjunct to itself (a "supplement" as derrida wd say haw-haw snaw-snaw)

my RFN tone is a bit more "in stone" than is convenient (cz it takes me an age to get to cranking new stuff out, and i have rooms full of marble blocks chipped down to blocked marbles)

i find it much easier to be flighty and instant within the Freaky Trigan empire

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, I would say you find it impossible to ignore the "blogosphear." Otherwise you wouldn't keep trying to provoke arguments on my thread or on this one. And I am offended by you trying this particular "tack" on something which actually IS the life of some people. Just as you would be offended by people having a go at the Lollies.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, to answer Tom's take on Andrew's question...

I have/had an internet friend (one who I'd met several times IRL and considered myself very close to her) who I met through a mailing list, and who was active on several mailing lists I was on, and we also exchanged frequent emails.

She started getting very into the Blog thing, I just kind of ignored her. Then she started talking about how her Blog was causing friction in her relationship - her boyfriend had read something which upset him on her blog, which she "accidentally" left open on the computer they shared. Curiosity got the better of me, and I searched out and read the last few entries in her blog. Not only was there stuff about her boyfriend (I can understand why he would have been upset by it, plus she was talking about other lovers (n.b. they were in an "open" relationship)) but there was also stuff in there about *me*.

I felt hurt and betrayed, and yes, our relationship suffered because of it. If you don't have the guts to say something to someone outright in email, you shouldn't be putting it out on the web for them to discover. If you want to keep a diary, keep it private.

Anyway, that has very little to do with the sort of blogging discussed here, but it's a contributing factor in my distrust of blogging.

Just as you would be offended by people having a go at the Lollies.

Well, perhaps I have a certain sense of "well, I had to put up with it - AND FROM YOU AT POINTS, I MIGHT POINT OUT - so you can just shut up and read the criticism for a change."

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I am pretty much the same on my blog, perhaps more serious on my new one, that was kind of the point I guess. In real life I am less neat than my blog.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"supplement" as derrida wd say

i agree that that's the groanydad's agenda -- but i'm not giving derrida praise for using the word 'supplement' just yet!
ie, you'll find the tv listings in the colour 'supplement', as fredric jameson calls it...

enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Why do you think I mentioned it?

But no Kate, you're not going to play that game with me. Just because someone pissed you off ages back with their blog doesn't give you the right to sneer at other bloggers or shit on their parade, as small as it might be.

I posted the thread because I thought it was a nice and pleasant gesture from someone about whom I had been less than complimentary about on my blog. And I have had a very nice email back from Rob as well.

I'm sorry things evidently aren't going well for you, but I can't do anything about that. ILx is not the solution to any of your problems. If you want to bang your head against the wall you constructed, then go ahead and do it. A number of us here would just prefer it if you went and did it somewhere else. Or even better, if you want to get in the Guardian or get anywhere then fucking get up off your arse, stop feeling sorry for yourself and DO something.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

derrida's notion of the "supplement" is that you get cross if all the extra bits of the paper aren't there in the shop but you still throw most of them in the bin when you get it all home

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.theonion.com/3944/news3.html

derrida was on point with that.

enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

You have no freaking idea, so get off your sanctimonious high horse! And oh my god, you managed to get through an entire post without playing the sympathy card. Congratulations for a freaking change.

Bloggers who talk about nothing else except their freaking blog are like any other mono-maniacs - FREAKING B.O.R.I.N.G.! There are plenty of other bloggers around this place who don't feel the need to define their entire life and personality through a fucking blog.

I am stopping this post now because I am about to descend into a personal attack and I don't want to do that.

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, I think it has to do with learning to write Essays for school. What little I write is more bullet points of smart/interesting things as what I have thought, and a few FT posts have been killed due to the lack of something to Pull It All Together. Though more have been killed because I'm too lazy to get stuff down in the first place.

OK, to answer Tom's take on Andrew's question...

Oi!

i find it much easier to be flighty and instant within the Freaky Trigan empire

Which is funny because you're definitely someone who comes to mind as regards being able to show in ILX context that you have knowledge in depth.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

You obviously need to define your entire life and personality through this fucking message board; otherwise why are you on it so often?

But enough of this. Kate and I have, as long-term posters know, had a problematic relationship on this board, and for a time this year it looked as though it was turning into something approaching Actual Friendship in the Real World. But no more. Fuck this. Things are going brilliantly for me at the moment and I'm not going to let some spineless, neurotic, egotistical fuck-up destroy that with their inadequacies.

And a word of warning to anyone else wanting to be "friends" with Kate: don't bother. As soon as she finds an excuse, however lame, she'll turn on you.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah well, good question anyway Andrew, YOU C*NT!

I certainly write differently all over the shop. Something like the size of an input window even will change the way I arrange paragraphs, and fonts will even affect my use of capital letters! But not that much you'd be pleased to know. Certainly I'm not very happy with how I write on the blogs, perhaps because I write so differently to everyone else (except maybe Snr Fluoro) I get very self-conscious about Real Actual Content.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I like pie.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't ILX supposed to be fun?

Patrick Kinghorn, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

No it's supposed to be about pithy journalism.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

And pie.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

CAKE dammit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

TARTS.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

but i'm not giving derrida praise for using the word 'supplement'

(Not having a go at Enrique!)
Derrida really can't win can he? Either he uses esoteric jargon and stupid neologisms or he uses ordinary words and so doesn't get any credit. The trouble with this is that after seeing Derrida use the word supplement (ie implies something lacking in whatever requires a supplement, as much as it tells us the supplement isn't complete in itself) it's very hard to see the word itself in any other light afterwards. The same thing happens with other thinkers -- after reading Derrida's take on people, it's quite common for people to go 'but he's just saying what X was saying all along' when in fact Derrida's X looks subtly or importantly different from the way X looked before. So then loads of books attack Derrida for just ripping off (short list) Kierkegaard, Schelling, Hegel, Heidegger, Levinas, Blanchot, Plato, Augustine etc. And come on, he can't be ripping them ALL off -- unless something altogether strange is going on. (Which is not to say he isn't, and it isn't)... < / rant >

alext (alext), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to thank everyone who made this thread possible, who should all hope I never meet them (/again).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Derrida pie would taste lousy. All Special K and crust.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, come on, all we need is Momus, the Amazing Randy, a few more dick jokes and a kitten and we can lock it and put this in the FAQ as the archetypal ILE thread.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i think momus said he was getting a toejob from somewhere, and it'll be hard to keep up the heat till his return. we can try, though.

enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"toejob"??????????????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

bah i wanted alext to mark my explanation of "supplement" out of 10 9

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(NOTE: The above incredulity is not a request for explication/sequence diagrams/etc.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, the visions.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"toejob"??????????????

damn skippy

enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently you can get one on the NHS, and it has nothing to do with Bush.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha mark! v.g. 'an engaging presentation making good use of humour, demonstrating evidence of wider research and analytical skills.'

(Can anyone guess what I've been doing all afternoon...)

alext (alext), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oi've just started a blog (I was ill and bored but I'm getting into it now)

http://www.livejournal.com/users/lynskey/

Come see!

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't even know about this until ronan just told me about five minutes ago - ile isn't about writing; it's a conversation... after walking out of a pub, i don't expect people to turn to one another and say "fuck, that bloke's brilliant!" but writing's different... anyway i guess this is a backhanded kinda compliment - i'd probably bore you rigid if you met me, but i'm a nice bloke on paper...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

and looking over the rest of this thread and the way it's turned out, i'd just like to say that i love you all and want to cover jess in hp sauce...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

quite nice considering how fairly outspoken you've been abt the W1R3 here though eh dave?

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

um, shhhh nathan!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm .. which is the thread started by Marcello?

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

never mind, I found it. so many goddamn threads around this place these days.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 20 November 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)
