Though she could have also chosen "yes?" or "that's my name, don't wear it out".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck 'proper' response. as long as you get a response, what's the problem?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I recommend this approach:

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Personally, I would say "yes" in an office setting.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It depends on the office, though. In one with a casual environment I don't really see a problem with "what?".

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"What" is not a proper response, but then again, neither is calling someone by saying their name. Also, your statement implies that you were not within a distance in which you could speak quietly and professionally, so maybe that is why you got the response that you did.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The polite way to answer is "Beep beep"

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"Stephanie?"

"No, fuck YOU!!!"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"DON'T TOUCH MY STUFF!" works well, too.

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, I didn't know you worked in my office!

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

is your office actually daycare?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry, Sharon. In the future, I will respond by getting up from everything I am doing, coming to your office, curtseying, and replying, "Yes, your majesty?"

Stephanie Zay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, no shit; she can say "what?" if she wants to! The most fucking annoying thing is when the person calling the other person isn't satisfied with the initial reply and asks again hoping for a better one. so the appropriate second and third responses are "What!?" and "WHAT THE FUCK IS IT YOU FUCKING CUNT"

Dan I., Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The main problem I have with the whole question is that apparently it's okay for Sharon to shout someone's name rudely across the office space but it's not ok for Stephanie to respond in kind--why didn't Sharon get up and address Stephanie in her space? Or pick up the phone and dial Stephanie's extention, if that option was available? You shout someone's name across an office--how are they supposed to respond besides yelling back, "What?" or "Yeah?"

There's this dude in my office (insert "everyone in my office" for "this dude" actually but one in particular) who just yells out people's names from his office because he is faaaaar too good to get up and just address them politely at their desk. It's like, whatever you are currently doing is not as important as whatever he is doing, so you should drop everything and come to his space and address him politely, though he hasn't the respect for you to do the same when he needs you. It's a pain in the ass and a nasty attitude.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

ally if you don't kill everyone in yr office w.a machete is it ok if i do?

(not inc.you)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

haha go right on ahead, I think that is the polite response really. I got yelled at just earlier because someone else wrote a series of wires completely wrong and I had the nerve to not notice that the account numbers were made up before it was signed off on. I was like, but I didn't write it. And they were like, we don't have time for that quibble quabble! How could you do this! And I'm like, but I didn't do anything! And they're like, you should just know when something someone who makes $200k did is completely wrong, wtf Ally! And I'm like fuck you whatever so I threw my stapler and it broke and that was kind of totally awesome.

Oh and I wasn't allowed to have lunch today but they made me order everyone else lunch but didn't let me order myself something BUT the people we ordered from fucked up and brought too many sandwiches so I got lunch!!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

dude if people actually said "We don't have time for quibble quabble" in my office I'd totally like this place like 10,000x more.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, this isn't really helping figure out how to answer people who call your name.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

you are totally going to write it all up *w.names* though when you leave?

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Quibble quabble is something Mr. Twee would say, foo.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

haha seriously I should do this. I could post it all to ILX, Matos's StepDad Thread stylee.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Quibble quabble is something Mr. Twee would say, foo.

He'd also wear several gold ascots.

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and I wasn't allowed to have lunch

isn't that illegal? (assuming you work more than 6 hours)

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. The lunch and the perceived necessity or lack thereof for Ally issue has been an ongoing thing.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

haha seriously I should do this. I could post it all to ILX, Matos's StepDad Thread stylee.

Do it! Though I still believe that your office stories and Matos's stepdad stories both deserve their own book.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't that illegal?

Yeah, but it's about 1 a week for laws Ally's employers have broken regarding her. Soon it'll be down to Zoning Laws and old New Amsterdam statutes about where you can feed livestock.

Bossman: Here's your goat.
Ally: Uh, okay.
Bossman: It is entirely against company policy for you to feed this goat on Union Square.
Ally: Fine, whatever.
Bossman: We're going to need that goat back now.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos's stepdad's name was Chris.

The owner of my company's name is Chris.

COINCIDENCE???

Allyzay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

no. not at all, that's silly.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Just FYI if you don't want mold poisoning while in major US cities, avoid staying in these buildings:

Not Allyzay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

arrgh no more, I am going to start that thread tonight when I get home, they can eat me already. I can't wait to tell the ovulation one.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew's goat scenerio reads like a Dr. Katz episode.

pantalaimon (synkro), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The person who calls me most often in the office, I answer "Yes Chris" in a polite manner. He is a slightly more juniour person who does need a bit of help here and there, and I try very hard to be gracious about it, as I was given loads of gracious help when I started there. And he's a nice guy who does generally listen, so that's good. Normally, unless we need help with something on our screen, we would walk over to someone else to speak to them.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, one of those buildings looks like the apartment complex from "Ghostbusters"! Cool!

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It might be? That building is a block away from me.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(by "that building" I mean the building Sigourney Weaver lived in in Ghostbusters)

(but I don't know why it'd be included in that picture cos it's not a hotel?)

Allyzay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I look forward to the Allyzay's tales. :-)
