Scotland spanked 6-1

Well; that's that then.

Vassos, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Terrible shame about Wales. They should have gone for it much more.

Vassos, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

wales looked exhausted in the last half hour. still haven't seen the goals from the scotland game. i thought the dutch would win 3-0 or 4-0, conceding 6 was a bit of a surprise.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hopkins to thread.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Well done to our Scottish friends on a brave attempt to get to the Finals despite all the odds.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

they were all plucked out

chris (chris), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

*sniggers*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

can you imagine what Scotland would have been saying right now if it had been us that had been gubbed like that?

It wouldn't have been saying anything due to the celebratory hangovers

chris (chris), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no sympathy for either Wales or Scotland, because neither of them would have supported England had we been in the same situ!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

PP plays the big man.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

spanked? I thought Scotland were humped?

alext (alext), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I must say my first thought was porked.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, no i didn't. I am still able to be female AND have an opinion you know!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ireland have been through their fair share of qualification near-misses, so I have quite a bit of sympathy for both teams. What's really frustrating about international football is the huge gaps between games - it's gonna take ages before ireland, scotland and wales can get back on track. I feel depressed :-(

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite fancied 6-1 as a likely aggregate before the first leg - y'know, 3-1 at Hampden, 3-0 in Amsterdam. This was a bit of a surprise. Luckily the Dutch eased off after 66 minutes. Wales were shockingly poor.

But...Turkey's exit! Latvia have all the pluck!

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Pluck from obscurity!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

PP - I am horrified that you think I'm making some crass sexist point. I only said 'big man' cause 'big woman' would have been too confusing.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought 6-0 flattered Scotland a little.

Good effort Latvia, yer Baltic beauties.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

'big woman' would have brought a whole new world of pain coming your way! ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

very disappointed by Wales, as for Turkey there must be a proper name for the way World Cup 3rd placers always fail to qualify for the next big tournament 2 years later

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"cold turkey" could be good.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought that would have been a decent headline after the first leg in Riga where it looked bollock freezing cold.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

England will definitely be drawn in the same group as France and Holland

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

When is the draw?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

And how is it seeded? England/France both group winners, so should avoid each other surely?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Sunday 30th November.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're gonna lose, it's better to be gubbed. I bet the Welsh feel more hurt.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

most likely...

Pot A - Portugal, France, Czech Republic, Sweden

Pot B - Italy, Germany, England, Spain

Pot C - Holland, Russia, Croatia, Denmark

Pot D - Bulgaria, Switzerland, Latvia, Greece

based on qualifying records for most recent previous tournaments - seems a bit unfair to the likes of Denmark, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Greece who all topped their groups though.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Composition of bowls
The six top-ranked group winners will be placed in bowl A (ball colour blue). The six runners-up will be placed into bowl B (red), and the four lower-ranked group winners will be placed in bowl C (green). A ball will be drawn first from bowl B, followed by a ball from bowl A to determine the first match. Teams drawn from bowl B will play their first match at home, against the team drawn from bowl A. This procedure is repeated for the first six fixtures.

Position switches
If a group winner are drawn against a runner-up they have already played against in the qualifying competition, they will automatically be transferred to the next fixture. If this situation arises for the sixth fixture, the first and sixth-drawn group winners will switch positions.

Final round next May
As far as the seventh match is concerned, two balls will be taken from bowl C. The first drawn team play the first match at home. The same procedure will be repeated for the final match in the draw. The eight play-off winners will contest the UEFA European Under-21 Championship final round next May, at a venue to be decided from among the final-round participants.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope England avoid Sweden (they just can't beat them) and the Dutch mainly

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

England often give poor performances against Scandinavian countries. I predicted a loss at the weekend and lo and behold...

I watched last night's game in Paisley with Ailsa, Mr Ailsa, Ally C and others. I was surprised at the lack of sorrow-drowning in the pub and the generally cheery atmosphere.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Some time ago I read somewhere that England weren't going to be top seeds because they're too rubbish or something.

I think most nations delight in the downfall of England, not just the Welsh and Scots. Certainly the Spanish have been known to have great fun at my expense. They tend to form a circle around me and laugh.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you cut and paste that without reading it, Nick?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know why anyone other than the Welsh, Scottish and Irish would delight in the 'downfall' of England, not that there has really been one anyway. Despite not being top seeds England will now probably be third favourites after France and Portugal, which won't do them many favours either but what's new.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah - it's the wrong thing. I started reading it.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Time to get out my Excel Spreadsheet planner and update it for this competition...

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

nice work Dave!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't apologise to me, Nick, apologise to the class. It's their time you're wasting.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never been told off by Mike before and now I see how completely wrong that thing is. I can't find what the real procedure is on the UEFA site either.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be surprised if it's not as i described. they may draw the top seeds first, then the fourth, third and second last to make it more exciting if nothing else. as with the Euro 2000 draw they simultaenously determine the order in which the matches will be played e.g. top seed in Group A (Portugal) will play the team in their group from Pot C or D first most likely.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It was a fairly grim night. Wales didn't seem to have the belief. Still I always fancied Russia to score a goal and it would be tough from there on in. And Scotland, I didn't see it so I can't really comment.

Lawro/Davies was an odd combination I thought, Davies gets madder by the game, "why, WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY!"

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the seeding based on FIFA ranking or something else, though?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently it's based on how well they qualified for Euro 2000 and World Cup 2002 (and not their actual performances at said events themselves though this may also be taken into account)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

UEFA Co-efficient innit. Last two tournaments. Or is it three? I know England weren't seeded in Euro 200 because of our failure to qualify for USA 94, or something like that. I forget.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Euro 200!

Did the Romans win?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

At least Holland & Scotland started off well with their bitch scraps!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the only reason England were lowest seeds at Euro 2000 is because statistically they went through the play-offs and scraped thru against Scotland quite painfully - i've never seen and England team play worse than at times under Keegan's rule sadly (actually worse than during Taylor's '94 campaign though perhaps equivalent to Euro '92)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The Romans were hotly tipped, but the Vandals' route one style and fierce defending won through. The Ostrogoths and the Visigoths played a closely fought out 3rd/4th place match. Judea were due to appear, as the Sassanids didn't want them in their confederation. However, a storm off Capri ended their hopes. Scotland failed to overcome the hurdle of Hadrian's wall and missed the deadline for registration. England were rubbish as they couldn't quite find the balance between traditional english virtues of stout defending and Latin influenced flair up front. Ireland would have participated, but everyone was a bit hazy as to whether they actually existed or not.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Nero dribbled while Rome burned.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ireland were busy trying to organise a friendly in Iceland and had to settle for playing puffins.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Tony Cascarino capped his debut with a backpost header.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

for the Romans of course

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

''Well done to our Scottish friends on a brave attempt to get to the Finals despite all the odds.''

haha Tim that's not what you were saying last night.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 November 2003 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

can i assume from last night's display that barry davies has, as they say, some welsh in him? a degree of bias crept in at certain points i thought...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 20 November 2003 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I felt quite sorry for Ron Jones, he was bricking himself before the game

chris (chris), Thursday, 20 November 2003 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hartson had a stinker. Where has that first touch gone? He's controlled Berkovic's head better than the ball last night.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Thursday, 20 November 2003 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"A man's reach should exceed his grasp or what's a heaven for?"

You don't get Robert Browning at the kickoff from Jonathan Pearce.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 20 November 2003 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish you hadn't mentioned Pearce, I hate that Git so much, possibly the most biased commentator ever. Two players are indulguing in handbags so what does Pearce do? Raves about how the Dutch player (I think it was the keeper Van Der Saar actually) is completely out of order. He makes me switch off football sometimes, and that takes some doing.

chris (chris), Thursday, 20 November 2003 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"I have no sympathy for either Wales or Scotland, because neither of them would have supported England had we been in the same situ!"

How very very very OTM...

smee (smee), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what makes us better ;)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I am trying to guilt by Scottish mates into at least feigning support for England by being so nice it hurts about their teams. I suspect it won't work, but I feel superior and, dare I say it, smug. Shit, game up.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Even feigning support for England round these parts = instant death

Ignore me I'm just bitter...

smee (smee), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Scottish and bitter about football? Now *there's* a combination we don't come across much.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Turkey... SPREADEAGLED!!!

[(c) JM, October 1987]

English and smug about football? Ditto ;0)

smee (smee), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer SPATCHCOCKED

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

That is a good word, Madchen: it appears memorably in ch 9 of Ulysses. I think it may have a Shakespearean or Miltonic provenance too.

the pinefox, Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I first encountered it in a Dave Langford book review column in White Dwarf as it happens.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it may have a Shakespearean or Miltonic provenance too.

Barry Davies would know. I'm disappointed no one has developed the plucky/plucked meme.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I did! A bit.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick earns back all his gold stars and gets to read aloud at tomorrow's assembly.

Delight For Plucky Latvians As Turks Stuffed And Roasted, Scots Go Dutch But Falter, Welsh Play Russian Roulette And Lose, Spanish Fly In Norway, Slow-venia Halted By Croatia

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

England smug about footie? that's so not true, inferiority complexed if anything.

Is what Jonnie just told me true and the Scotland fans were singing

"we'll support you up to four"?

chris (chris), Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Even if it does involve Turkey, you can't talk about footballers and getting roasted any more. It's the law or something.

Jonnie, Thursday, 20 November 2003 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Latvians pluck turkey for fun.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

For the Scotland game

"Pluck me, it's six!"

(this is a tenuous Mudhoney joke)

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 November 2003 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Blimey - it SPATCHCOCKED a genuine cookery term?

It's true, Barry's Knowledge of Milton would help. But where is he when we need him?

Probably still in Cardiff.

the pinefox, Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

English and smug about football? Ditto ;0)

We don't usually have that much to be smug about though Smee!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

football, eh?

nations, etc.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

You do it with chickens and other foul - it involves taking out half the bones and flattening it out. Like this:
http://www.rotisol.com.hk/images/Bcrappo.JPG

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

spatchcocked poussin done on the barbie is fantastic

chris (chris), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

We don't usually have that much to be smug about though

So why do you (huge generalisations ahoy!) never f***ing shut up about 1966 then? Or never stop finding excuses to shows Gazza's goal from Euro 96? Or never stop feeling so hard done by when you fail to win any tournament (or match for that matter)? Eh?

I would like to point out that Madchen was sitting in the pub last night claiming that she was never smug about football. I knew she was lying.

And being crap is the Scottish way. Ally C's expression of benign resignation kind of summed it up. It's what we do up here. We'd run of out ways to arse it up on goal difference etc, so the next trick was obviously to lull the entire country into 1978 levels of hysteria before falling arse over tit and making a unholy mess of it.

I blame it on the new away shirts btw (c. Sir Alex Ferguson). They made us look like England. And in what way would dark blue have been too confusing against Holland's bright orange monstrosity.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

So why do you (huge generalisations ahoy!) never f***ing shut up about 1966 then?

because it's all we've got to crow about? see also Archie Gemmel's goal in '78?

Or never stop finding excuses to shows Gazza's goal from Euro 96?

because it's a really really good goal, that if Pele had scored it in black and white it may just be one of the best ever goals scored?

chris (chris), Friday, 21 November 2003 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

was Gazza's final touch and the way the ball just bobbled in the vital factor that stopped it being the best goal ever? i'm inclined to think yes.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 November 2003 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i never fucking shut up about Le Tournoi personally

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 November 2003 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Le Tournoi was a great tournament. Bendy goals!

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 21 November 2003 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

So why do you (huge generalisations ahoy!) never f***ing shut up about 1966 then?

And by extension, why do Scots never fucking shut up about how the English "never fucking shut up" about winning the World Cup in 1966?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 November 2003 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Also I had a mate who never, ever shut up about the fact that Scotland "beat the Wrld Champions" in 1967 (or was it '68?) and *still* bemoaned the '66 coverage.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 21 November 2003 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Gazza's goal probably gets shown less than Gemmill's too

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 November 2003 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the time where I point out that West Ham won the World Cup. Everyone nods sagely but thinks 'pipe down' you.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 21 November 2003 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I notice no-one is defending England fans for feeling hard done by whenever anyone beats you :)

And before everyone thinks I hate all English fans, I was just pointing out to PinkP that English fans do have things that they are smug about. I never said Scottish fans didn't have a tendency smug about the two or three minor incidents that make our dismal international history less embarassing...

Truce? (I'm still not supporting them in anything though)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 22 November 2003 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

that was west AUKLAND mikey, not west ham...
