Transgendered Day of Remembering.

Five years ago the Transgendered person Rita Hester was killed, in the ensuing anger, a holy day to remember all those gender outlaws who were killed in the struggle was set aside.

That is today.
Keep it in mind, and do something.

A bump, since it seems wrong to ignore this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 November 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

and another bump

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I had something to contribute to this beyond "Yeah". Keep bumping.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Another "yeah" here. Note that since the last TDR, 30 more trans people have been killed.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

:-(

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

On the one hand, 30 people dying in a year is horrible.

On the other hand, 30 people dying in a year is a lot fewer than I would expect. So, um, yay?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Well how many transgendered people are there to begin with.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Worldwide? At a minimum I would tens of thousands, given that there 6 billion people on Earth.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I'd assume there are tens of thousands in the US alone.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, what I mean is, how does the TG hate-crime death rate compare with other groups.

Not to get all mathy on this, I guess.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll go home and listen to some Jayne County.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

We might note that many of us (I speak as a middle class white male) aren't subject to hate crime at all, so counting the proportion of those murdered doesn't seem entirely necessary. And the numbers aren't necessarily a measure of how much hate and oppression there is, since this is something that so many people go to understandably huge lengths to keep secret/private. Any hate crime, as we all really know here, is to be opposed and mourned.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

otm

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, none of my comments were meant to argue with what Martin is saying, more to do with what Dan said (about 30 being less than he'd expect, etc.).

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"So, um, yay?" = "This appears on the surface to be a good thing, but it's still pretty grim and doesn't even begin to cover what life is actually like for the transgendered, plus it's really fucking macabre to look at a death toll and say, 'Hey, that's a good thing!'"

To spell it out.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The New School -- Lang specifically -- is having a pretty extensive day-long commemoration. There might be some performances and speeches tonight, I'd advise any interested parties in New York to check out www.lang.edu.

justin s., Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

If a death toll is lower than you'd expect, it IS a good thing! That's not macabre at all! When it turned out that the death toll at WTC wasn't 10,000 like early reports said (or the 40,000 I originally guessed based on very little info), that was good news. I mean, obviously it's still sad that 40 people (or 4000+) died, but it's really great news that all the other people didn't die.

Or, in other words, a death toll is also a count of the number of people who didn't die.

Not that I really want to be this pedantic on this thread.

Where are the stories of people's transgendered friends?

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I wasn't really trying to get at anyone much, I just thought the discussion of numbers was a red herring.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

'We might note that many of us (I speak as a middle class white male) aren't subject to hate crime at all'

what the fuck is meant by that? please tell me you're not saying 'whites can't be victims of hate crimes'.

'Where are the stories of people's transgendered friends?'

thank god, my 2 or 3 TG friends don't have any horror stories. they're doing really well. one of them just transitioned F to M in a very public way, and noone gave her/him any crap about it.

nobody, Thursday, 20 November 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"what the fuck is meant by that? please tell me you're not saying 'whites can't be victims of hate crimes'."

I think what he's saying is that a white man in England, he's not currently subject to hate crime. He could be, but in his current location and society he's not.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 21 November 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew is about right. Hate crime is a special subset that, if it is to have any meaning at all, means that you are a victim because of some group to which you belong - race, sex, sexuality, religion and so on. In fact I'm bi so I guess I could suffer from that, but haven't so far. But otherwise I'm pretty safe, at least while I stay around here.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

This isn't the appropriate spot to have a "I hate the term 'hate-crime'" rant, is it?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(No, but start another thread and I'll be right behind you saying "amen!")
