Is there an inordinately high number of people for whom Transformers:The Movie proved to be an unparalleled emotional watershed?

the Transformers movie is so weird! seriously i think that movie may have been the first thing to introduce me to the idea of real death. seeing Optimus Prime die TORE ME UP!

it's such a disturbing and melancholy movie at points. plus dinobots.

AKA The Hard Facts You Learned From Softie Movies...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG I totally agree with ryan. Seeing Optimus die had me shattered, questioning Jesus and everything. But I wouldn't call it a softie movie.

Dancing Queen, Friday, 21 November 2003 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It had one of the scream a bad word ("SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!", as I recall) as their planet exploded! It made me feel a bit grown up seeing that, I think. (Note that this scene has since been removed from most copies.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, kids movies, then. Whatever.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG! I'd forgotten Windcharger and Wheeljack bought the farm in T:TM as well...

Fools, robots are coming to sterilize the planet of all organic life, and you talk about this movie like it's nothing more than entertainment! You'll see what happens when you fail to worship your robot masters. Eternal pain will be yours! By the way Custos might be able to say something about the pedigree of this movie, it's kind of cool, some Marvel comics guys wrote it, plus it has Orson Welles' last film role.

sucka (sucka), Friday, 21 November 2003 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"Dare to be Stupid" was an important event in my wife's formative years, but she still gets it mixed up with the Safety Dance.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 21 November 2003 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

What about the bit when Ironhide is at Megatron's feet begging for mercy and Megatron blows his face off? That's pretty hardcore for a kid's film.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 November 2003 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"oh shit, what are we gonna do now?"

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 21 November 2003 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the Decepticon gangfucking of Arcee was a bit extreme

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 November 2003 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Wonderful over-the-top soundtrack too.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 21 November 2003 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

'you got the touch' from BOOGIE NIGHTS was here first.

u all knew this i bet.

piscesboy, Friday, 21 November 2003 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I always loved the climax where the hero (Hot Rod?) puts the matix thingy in his chest. Also this film made me think that 'Oblivion' was a real place where the walls were red.

Pete S, Friday, 21 November 2003 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Transformers The Movie = last ever performance of Orson Wells. I can't work out whether this is dead cool or just plain tragic.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 November 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

it's merely a statistic

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 November 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Could've been worse, could've been fucking Gobots.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 21 November 2003 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Gobots: Battle of the Rock Lords.
I liked that one too.....

Pete S, Friday, 21 November 2003 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

What about the bit when Ironhide is at Megatron's feet begging for mercy and Megatron blows his face off? That's pretty hardcore for a kid's film.

"NOOOOOOOOO!"

"Such heroic nonsense..." *BLADOOOOW!*

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 21 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the ep of the regular show where they visited the graveship was fuckin' creepy.

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck the title of this thread. My ADD wouldnt even let me comprehend it.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Read: Did the Care Bears movies make you cry?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah. Old Yeller had me on the floor though.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i honestly can't think of another children's film that shows so much suffering and death. i think in part the impact has to do with the fact that the tv show wasn't like that at all--it was mostly pretty light hearted if i remember correctly. so this movie, with the first scene being the destruction of an entire civilization, really took you to another place entirely.

What about the bit when Ironhide is at Megatron's feet begging for mercy and Megatron blows his face off? That's pretty hardcore for a kid's film.

holy crap i feel like im 12 again reading that and remembering my reaction!

ryan (ryan), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I seem to remember Optimus dying made my friend James cry, even when we were as old as 15 or 16.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing is, Prime was/is always dying, so nah it didn't mean as much as when Yoda died.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Old Yeller isn't even sad, fuck that dog. You want sad, you watch Cool Runnings. Those Jamaican dudes really busted their ass only to have everything fall apart in their face. That had me bawling.

I don't even remember Transformers: The Movie but I'm sure anything involving killing robots would depress the hell out of me.

Allyzay, Friday, 21 November 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Sanka ruled.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The saddest movie in the world is The Great Escape actually.

Allyzay, Friday, 21 November 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, Ally, the saddest film involving robotic demise is "Silent Running", still the only film to have ever made me cry. I was only 7 though.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

K-Pax. Thats a tearjerker if ive ever seen one.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"It'll bore you to tears!" ~ Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times

I only saw The Black Hole for the first time like a couple weeks ago and I was really bothered by when that one Southern robot died, what is that about? Why they gotta kill robots? I guess I didn't really mind when they killed Darryl Hannah in Bladerunner, so not all robot death is sad.

Allyzay, Friday, 21 November 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

well yeah, no one gives a shit about androids!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Killing the old beat up robot in The Black Hole was childhood trauma for me. WAH!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember The Dark Crystal fucking me up pretty bad, but I can't remember why/how.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I give a shit about androids that look like Jude Law, except htat movie was so horrible.

Allyzay, Friday, 21 November 2003 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the best thing about that jude law film was the Teddy Ruxpin bearbot! Stole the show.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to take my friend's Teddy Ruxpin and put Debbie Gibson tapes inside them instead of the regular tape, it improved everything a lot.

Now all I can think about is My Buddy, does anyone remember that? I'm singing the song in my head from the ad, my buddy my BUDDY my buddy and meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Arrgh.

Allyzay, Friday, 21 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Wherever I go, heeeee goes

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god, we were in the Disney store the other day and they had a gigantic Sleeping Beauty doll, like the size of a child. It freaked me the fuck out. It was like a midget, in a box.

Allyzay, Friday, 21 November 2003 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember The Dark Crystal fucking me up pretty bad, but I can't remember why/how.

I watched this with my son last night, I forgot how creepy it was! Lots of death! He really didn't like the Skeksis.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't Kid Sister the female spinoff of My Buddy? Are girls not allowed to have friends they aren't related to?

(I have Transformers: the Movie on DVD. It never made me cry or anything, though.)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought it was a bit rough on Iron Hide getting killed so early, I mean he was the oldest Transformer! (before they thought of Kup).

jel -- (jel), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone knows that you were supposed to make out with Kid Sister.

Allyzay, Friday, 21 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Dark Crystal freaked me the hell out! I watched again last night and remembered why, like the skeksis draining the gelfling's essence or the beetle creatures converging on the fallen landstrider. Also muppets.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ally you gotta hear the "my buddy" song off the new g-unit.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Dark Crystal had a muppet taking an eye out of her own skull. Thank you, Jim Henson.

I remember seeing the "making of" featurette alla time on HBO back then.

upon viewing the flick again, about 2/3rds of the way thru we realized why the movie failed(as it were); more thought was put into production design, sets, etc, than was put into the story or the dialogue.

However, they learned their lesson, and came back later to make Labrynth

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Sterling u best be sending it to me.

Allyzay, Friday, 21 November 2003 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

its real high concept stuff. his buddy goes everywhere with him. but.. wait for it... are you ready.. by "buddy" he means "gun"!

bet you didn't see THAT coming.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I was hoping he meant an actual My Buddy doll :(

Allyzay, Friday, 21 November 2003 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a million Kid Sister jokes, but I have a not-being-a-pedophile reputation to more or less maintain here, for heaven's sake.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

So...seeing as we're mostly agreed on this, can I take it to the next level?

Is Transformers emo?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

And if so, what does that make Gobots?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

transformers:hardcore::gobots:emo

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And Rocklords?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

= The Darkness?

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

its real high concept stuff. his buddy goes everywhere with him. but.. wait for it... are you ready.. by "buddy" he means "gun"!

The Shaggs' "My Companion" to thread!

My companion is with me
Wherever I go, it goes too
My companion is with me
No matter what I do

When I ride my horse
I take my companion too, of course
When I go to the beach and run in the sand
I have my companion close at hand

My companion is with me when I drive my car
Even when I go real far
No matter where I am or what I do
My companion is always there too

When I walk my pets
No one dare *** (?)
I take my companion
It never has passed (?)

My companion is with me wherever I go
Even when I go to a show
My companion is, of course
My radio

disco donut (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

seeing as we're mostly agreed on this

I still hold by GI Joe: the Movie. How do people not get pumped by Sgt. Slaughter dropping the People's Elbow on Nemesis Destroyer? And Jinx, granddam of hot ch1x0r fighting?!

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

c'mom ppl prowl's death was most h-core, that anguished look back!

prima fassy (bob), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean optimus went GREY, that's not real

prima fassy (bob), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Prob with Cool Runnings is the TV highlights, as the people in Jamaica get all excited that they're leading and the TV quite clearly shows them being eighth.

But for me, it's the end of The Snowman. Every single time, probably even now.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

oh oh that very slight flaming and dulling of prowl's eyes

prima fassy (bob), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

seven months pass...
mean optimus went GREY, that's not real

yes. haha!
