"Carloco (Stallone and Shwartzenegger) purchased the rights to do a Live Action Speed Racer . They paid 10 million for the rights. The script was finished and even hired a casting agency and cast the parts. After the failure of Cliffhanger and Last Action hero, nothing became of it and so their licenses have expired."

Watched the this film last night. Actually pretty good - very entertatining and must have been pretty enjoyable working on the visuals.
Anyone else want to share the love?
― Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 11:38 (seventeen years ago)
I can share the love. I've never seen the cartoons so that may explain my appreciation for this movie. I really liked it!
― Jibe, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 12:01 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah I liked it too. Then again, when I read that it was a headachingly colorful, psychedelic CGI rave cartoon of a movie it only made me want to see it more. The visual onslaught that seemed to have turned off most reviewers just made it more entertaining. Good casting too, I thought...

I stand by what I said on this thread:
Feel the fear: Wachowskis and Christina Ricci do live-action version "Speed Racer"

In anticipation of me taking a sick day today, the YouTube algorithm “randomly” found me an hour-log discussion titled “Speed Racer: The Most Important Film of the 21st Century”

I am looking forward very much to nodding along with everything this stranger says about the movie

I've never seen it, but I bought a Speed Racer T-shirt a few months ago because Will Smith wears one in the "Summertime" video.

You are required to see it. It is the most important film of the 21st century.
― trm (tombotomod), Thursday, 24 April 2025 14:58 (eleven months ago)
not sure i'd argue it as "most important," it has had zero influence that i've seen on contemporary film. "greatest," yeah absolutely

In the Jazzy Jeff video, which came out 17 years before the Wachoswski film, Smith is wearing a shirt of the 1967 TV adaptation.

I had done the math in my head--"Summertime" was 1991, a year, one of many, that preceded the 21st century--but didn't bother mentioning it. The shirt (mine is identical):
