Anyone here into Sumo?

When I was living in Tokyo I became fascinated by the big fuckers on the dohyo - watching them, their rituals, their peculiarities, became a daily routine during a tournament. I even started to follow the championships stats-wise the way I do other sports, and choose favourites, speculate on results.. all kinds of stuff. And then when I finally actually went to one day of a basho, the atmosphere knocked me for six.

So, yeah, I'm still into it, though now it's just news from japantimes.com really. And the days of Takanohana/Wakanohana vs the Hawaiian boys Akebono and Konoshiki are gone. My fave ? Kaio. Tough as nails, from the mean streets of Kyushu. And of course lovable old Toki and his Elvis sideburns.

darren (darren), Sunday, 23 November 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, so you can explain -- what's the deal with the little thing the winner gets after each match that he does that three part move about? And is the guy who gives it to him an actual Shinto priest (if that's an accurate way to describe the religious function in general for said belief)?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to love the highlights show on C4 (in the UK), hosted by Lyall Watson, i think. Just an amazing spectacle. I've really missed it ever since.

I remember Konishki ('The Dumptruck', wasn't it?). What were/are some of the other stars and their nicknames?

Pete S, Sunday, 23 November 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it - I watched it for a while on Eurosport too, though they gave it pretty rotten coverage, moving it around unpredictably and without announcement. Not seen it since ITV Digital went belly up, and I miss it. How is Kaio doing now? He's one of my faves too. Who are yokozuna now?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 23 November 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

First up - Martin and Pete - there's actually only one yokozuna at the moment. The tournament that finished today in Fukuoka began with two non-Japanese in the Grand Champion slots, but Samoan behemoth Musashimaru announced his retirement about halfway through. He'd been out for almost a year with various ailments related to being an extremely large man who had been doing sumo stuff for 13-14 years, and his body just wasn't up to it.

So the only one left is Asashoryu, a 22-year-old Mongolian who has already won five tournaments. He lost this one though, to Tochiazuma, one of the four ozekis along with Martin's fave Kaio, and Chiyotaikai and Musoyama. Kaio was set for yokozuna status a couple of tourneys ago but fucked up the one he needed to get 11 or so wins in.

Pete, as well as the names I mentioned upthread, you may also remember Terao, the rather debonair crowd favourite, Mitoizumi, the bloke who threw his salt in the air very theatrically, and Mainoumi, a guy known basically for being about half the size of his opponents.

And Ned, I believe it's little more than a cheque of some kind along with a certicate of sorts. I've no reason to suspect that the guy isn't the Real Shinto McCoy, but they DO like dressing up, those crazy Japanese.

darren (darren), Sunday, 23 November 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, Asashoryu is a yokozuna now! And how is Tochiazuma looking as an oseki? I saw his spectacular first basho, if he is the youngster of whom I'm thinking. I really like Chiyotaiki too, by the way - partly because he is so distinctive and bulldog-like, and partly because he is trained by my all-time favourite, Chiyonofuji.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 23 November 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately I don't have televisual access to the sumo, but I suppose Tochiazuma's recent record must make him a yokozuna-elect if he stays fit.

One interesting thing is that a Georgian lad - Kokkai - just won the Juryo (2nd division) title and will become the first-ever European to join the ranks next time out.

darren (darren), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Two Akebono titbits:

1. He's going to fight Bob Sapp in a K2 (UFC-style) event this(?) year. Blaargh.

2. He was a guest chef on Iron Chef once, and not so surprisingly, his final ratings were by a mile the highest on the panel.

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Q: What is Bob Sapp's claim to fame?

I could not understand his Beckham-esque omnipresence earlier this year.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

He was an ex-NFL lineman (no relation to Warren) who's been making big headlines in UFC-stylee bouts (I forget which federation he's in). He's also got quite a mouth, an articulate one at that, so his media profile has been raised to fairly mainstream outlets (e.g. Best Damn Sports Show & Leno).

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, Musashimaru is retiring!

"what's the deal with the little thing the winner gets after each match that he does that three part move about?"
Yeah, those are checks that equal approx $1000 per each advertising sign that was carried around right before the match. The bigger matches with more important players always have more advertisments before them.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Regarding gygax's last comment, i'd just like to ask the US posters - are the producers of the Simpsons patronising you by leaving Beckham out of the British episode because he's "not famous enough" ?

Or do you think they judged that right? Jeez, the concept of St. David not being famous enough makes my mind trip.

Pete S, Tuesday, 25 November 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Beckham who? the guy from "bend it like beckham?"

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

R U playin' Nairn? You could so easily be teasing helpless little me and i wouldn't know it.

Pete S, Tuesday, 25 November 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, yeah I'm playing a bit. But really the first place I heard about Beckham was in Japan, and then I made the connection that he was Posh Spices husband, and the only time's I've heard about him in America were seeing "Bend It Like Beckham" and some special on VH1 about him, but that's it. A few of my friends have no idea who he is. He is more famous in America for being married to a Spice girl than for being a soccer player.

(Back to sumo, are there anymore up-and-coming Hawaiian wrestlers?)

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

my commentary wrt both sapp and beckham are from japanese impressions. both are far less present on an american front.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"He is more famous in America for being married to a Spice girl than for being a soccer player."

O J Simpson meant nothing to anyone in Britain, other than him being the fall-guy to Leslie Nielsen in the 'Naked Gun' films, at the time he was arrested.

darren (darren), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think that's true. I was 15/16 when he was arrested, and even i knew he was an incredibly famous Ameican football star.

Pete S, Tuesday, 25 November 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what a K2 event is, but I'd imagine a 6'9 man weighing nearly 40 stones would take some stopping in any kind of fight.

I'm sorry Musashimaru is going. He has the most wonderfully sad face.

I'm astonished a European has finally made it into the top 40 there.

I knew who OJ was before the murder too. I'm not surprised Beckham is little known in the US, given how few people have any interest in football. The only current baseball players whose names I know are whichever are still playing of those in the Simpsons episode where Burns brings in 9 ringers.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

What I love about going to a basho is the Beezer Home league divisions that run through the day. Since most of the ringside seats are corporate bookings you can watch the really early stuff from the front, until the actual bokees turn up, which is great. Fat blokes get thrown at you!

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What Pete just said.

darren (darren), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

And as for OJ - well, I was just speaking from how I remember it.

darren (darren), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

twelve years pass...

Any tips for getting the most out of a trip to Osaka and the Honbasho next week? I know next to nothing about Sumo.

mmmm, Saturday, 12 March 2016 14:54 (ten years ago)

one year passes...

http://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20171129/p2g/00m/0sp/017000c

"Harumafuji has caused great trouble to the association and the public, Isegahama said, adding the yokozuna bears grave responsibility.

Harumafuji has admitted to assaulting his compatriot Takanoiwa in a drinking event at a restaurant-bar in the western Japan city of Tottori during a regional tour late October."

do you want to discuss this article?

XxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxXxxxx (dylannn), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 07:45 (eight years ago)

was just thinking if a similar incident occurred in WWF or whatever, pissed up shenanigans would be no biggie. But in Sumo one's honour seems very important.

calzino, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 07:58 (eight years ago)

i think it's closer to if, like, cal ripken jr cracked a heineken bottle across mike mussina's forehead.

XxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxXxxxx (dylannn), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 10:16 (eight years ago)

i think it also has something to do with the background of the fighters. wrestlers from central asia and eastern europe are raked over the coals after they fuck up, and at the same time there's been a push to reduce the number of foreigners competing in the a sport...

XxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxXxxxx (dylannn), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 10:19 (eight years ago)

at least this reminds me that I want to try to get tickets for the January tournament at Ryogoku Kokugikan

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 13:07 (eight years ago)
