jameslucasakarroland (jameslucasakarroland), Monday, 24 November 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been looking on and off since July, and I am starting my new job today. Where are you, james?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 24 November 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

my wife is an administrative assistant in SF, which seems to amount to being the receptionist, actually. She will attest that the job does in fact suck.

i am in SF, temping during the day and parking cars at night. i need to use more than craig'slist, it's dried up. does monster jobs work? what about yahoo and msn jobs?

i was an admin asst at ucsf for 6 years, it's a real thankless position i found. i'm trying to get more accounting type jobs, i think they pay more and there is less interaction with people.

Vacillating temp (Vacillating temp), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

what is your experience/background?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

monster and hotjobs are the places where both of the last two companies I worked for listed their positions. they get shitloads of applications for every job though so the chances of your resume getting pulled is not always very high unless you've spent a lot of time matching the keywords they're probably looking for. But I still get random recruiter calls for jobs because I've left my resumes up there. It won't hurt.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

My advice is to stop using the Internet to find jobs and do it the old fashioned way! the Internet = lala land

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i used monster and got a few call backs and a couple of interviews. i eventually found my job through a friend and about eight months of persistance / annoyance. stay away from the newspaper at all cost.

ANYWHERE on the west coast? Ensenada? Ketchikan, even?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax,

i was gonna paste my resume, but basically it's in purchasing, inventory control, warehousing, agriculture, delivery, light manufactuering and working for a pirate-owned record label.

thanks anthony i'll go try monster/hot jobs, maybe I can craft a few cover letters that have commonly used keywords, i have to cheat at this, 56k and all, each email is a 10 to 15 min affair once you attach files, etc.

tracer, what do you mean, cold calling? walk around with the yellow pages? i don't know if there are enough PC (politically correct) companies and or non-profits in SF to hire my marxist ass. (teehee)
maybe i should *network*...let's see, strippers on broadway, wanna be hoods, guy who's backpack smacks me in the face on the bus.

Vacillating temp (Vacillating temp), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a somewhat diverse working background: computer programming, fine art, government work, retail. So the way I worked Monster was to create a basic cover letter and then made slight variations depending upon what type of job it was for, emphasizing different things. Also, adding in the company's info in the TO: address. Another tip: include a line in the letter saying "qualified for XXXXX position" that you can just change to suit each one. Generic, but it saves you so much time. It helped greatly and definitely made applying to 30 or 35 positions a week, much easier.

VT,

A pirate-owned record label?

Have you contacted Midheaven/Revolver about your availability?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

good idea, maybe they can help me get rid of the 640 copies i have left at darla...remember me as the man who bought am patch to it's knees

Vacillating temp (Vacillating temp), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

seven years pass...

Woot this is me now.

Haha, could it look more grim right now?

big up yourself and encounter (admrl), Sunday, 12 December 2010 23:19 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously, where do people look for real jobs (the few that there are) these days? Craigslist is just full of dumb and creepy shit.

big up yourself and encounter (admrl), Sunday, 12 December 2010 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously though

big up yourself and encounter (admrl), Monday, 13 December 2010 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

you looking in the ent industry?

omar little, Monday, 13 December 2010 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

big up yourself and encounter (admrl), Monday, 13 December 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

entertainment, to clarify, not some treebeard kid's party costume shit

omar little, Monday, 13 December 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

i've got an editing bro who told me he was considering becoming a plumber(!)

omar little, Monday, 13 December 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

Apparently plumbers clock crazy dollars (I mean, more than you'd think)!

big up yourself and encounter (admrl), Monday, 13 December 2010 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

yeah half of craigslist seems like a scam at this point

harlan, Monday, 13 December 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's like one of those careers featured in one of those yahoo frontpage stories about in demand and well paying careers right alongside bedpan nurse or something.

omar little, Monday, 13 December 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

the only editor i know who isn't scuffling is my buddy who is working on transformers 3 and thor and quietly making more money than god

omar little, Monday, 13 December 2010 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

craigslist is like the back page of the Weekly. But you know, maybe I DO want to go to bartending school. Seems cool?

xp - I canNOT imagine editing something like that

big up yourself and encounter (admrl), Monday, 13 December 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

tbh the majority of people i know in this biz are looking for a way out, things have been getting worse for a lot of folks even before the economy started melting down. it's kind of unfortunate.

omar little, Monday, 13 December 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

Oh I can fix that

big up yourself and encounter (admrl), Monday, 13 December 2010 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

the economy?? please do~

omar little, Monday, 13 December 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

ok then

big up yourself and encounter (admrl), Monday, 13 December 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)
