Inquiring minds want to know...is there such a thing as right-wing music? Is there a through-the-looking-glass Le Tigre? Do neo-con kids rock out to songs about tax cuts for the rich? Do neo-con kids even exist or are they all born fully grown aged 45?

Miss Laura, Monday, 24 November 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

has this lady never heard of toby keith?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 24 November 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

songs about tax cuts for the rich

enrique (Enrique), Monday, 24 November 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be willing to put my money on Christian rock...

Otherwise, see Bob Roberts.

cybele (cybele), Monday, 24 November 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

or indeed "Commonwealth Song," the prototype for "Get Back" which is strangely absent from the new "naked" reissue of "Let It Be." "Don't dig no Pakistanis takin' all the people's jobs..." croons Macca.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 24 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i've lost the link, but for years chuck heston used 'happiness is a warm gun' as his signature song at NRA conferences.

enrique (Enrique), Monday, 24 November 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

White noise. Full blast. Insert pejoratives.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 24 November 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Your Body is A Wonderland"...of cheap labor and tax shelters!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The Grateful Dead

I've run into quite a few Republicans some of which like to smoke mota and go to see the Dead or Phish and that similar kinds of things.

I know it doesn't make sense, it must be a frat boy thing that carries over.

Is there an audio equivalent to Fox News?
Rush Limbaugh's radio show
G. Gordon Liddy's radio show
Oliver North's radio show
(notice how all the above are crooks, traitors and drug fiends?)
and to a degree, Don Imus's radio show

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Nu-metal. Duh.

maura (maura), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Nardwuar the Human Serviette: Are you the Hugh Heffner of LSD?
Dr. Timothy Leary : Now that is the dumbest question... Who's got the award? You've got the award. I want to congratulate you. I have been interviewed thousands of times and I have met the greatest professional crazed interviewers, and you're right up there. You're the Joe Montana, right?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Whitehouse, perhaps?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Maura OTM.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we're going to need to see some lyrics here.

Miss Laura, Monday, 24 November 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell me you can't imagine one of those poor, put-upon right-wingers singing this. (Rush Limbaugh, maybe, singing about his Oxy withdrawal? For starters?)

Everything's so blurry
and everyone's so fake
and everybody's empty
and everything is so messed up
pre-occupied without you
I cannot live at all
My whole world surrounds you
I stumble then I crawl

You could be my someone
you could be my scene
you know that i'll protect you
from all of the obscene
I wonder what you're doing
imagine where you are
there's oceans in between us
but that's not very far

Can you take it all away
can you take it all away
well ya shoved it in my face
this pain you gave to me
Can you take it all away
can you take it all away
well ya shoved it my face

Everyone is changing
there's noone left that's real
to make up your own ending
and let me know just how you feel
cause I am lost without you
I cannot live at all
my whole world surrounds you
I stumble then I crawl

You could be my someone
you could be my scene
you know that i will save you
from all of the unclean
I wonder what you're doing
I wonder where you are
There's oceans in between us
but that's not very far

[Chorus]

Nobody told me what you thought
nobody told me what to say
everyone showed you where to turn
told you when to runaway
nobody told you where to hide
nobody told you what to say
everyone showed you where to turn
showed you when to runaway

[Chorus]

This pain you gave to me

You take it all
You take it all away...
This pain you gave to me
You take it all away
This pain you gave to me
Take it all away
This pain you gave to me

maura (maura), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

If I start reimagining too many of these songs I'll totally fall into Weird Al territory

maura (maura), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

But really, I mean it's not too much of a stretch. The narcissism, the put-upon 'everyone's out to get me' paranoia, the misogyny, the ass-like faces of the frontmen ...

maura (maura), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...

Secundus Clover (s_clover), Friday, 5 August 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

but yeah, as Custos noted upthread, rightwing talk radio is the audio version. the religious ultraconservative Focus on the Family's James Dobson has a show syndicated on like 3500+ stations nationwide. The RNC faxes them all the same talking points, too, which is why they tend to repeat each other, usually word for word.

also, note that Dobson is the guy who just compared embryonic stem cell research to Nazi medical experiments.
